Obsessions

Land of OZ, CT(Zone 6a)

Hey! Today's Dr. Phil topic is obsessions! Haven't seen any AVer's so far.....LOL!

Jasper, AR(Zone 7a)

I am wearing a wig;)

Land of OZ, CT(Zone 6a)

So Gran the only one here willing to admit to her obsession? I know we are all obsessed with Gessies at least. Speaking of obsessions, look what I found on the Houseplant Forum--page down to Dec. 10, but if you page slowly, you will see my stromanthe. It is really pinker, btw.

My name is Tommie and I am a gessiholic....
Great link Phoebe!! I can't imagine having that many shelves!! But wouldn't complain if someone built them for me;)

Land of OZ, CT(Zone 6a)

Me neither! Can you imagine...60+ shoplights!!!! I would be in heaven! I wonder what it feels like to have all that space!

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Not only am I am addicted to plants but I am finding myself addicted to DG. Right here on DG,,,,,,,,,,,,,I need to take care of my shingles, pain pills I am on again and my teeth. Therefore I will not be posting until the first of the year.......Please........remind me if I 'relapse'. I am being very serious. My attitude and personality leave a lot to be desired right now...............So.......I am counting on my fellow AA'ers to call my hand and gently remind me I can't post until the first of the year.

Being addicted to plants is fine as long as you can be nice to people.........I can't seem to be right now...........These shingles plus my natural dispostion are going to get me in more trouble than I am in right now...........so..........where are you NIchole????? I can count on you to remind me that I have 'relapsed' if I get back on here.

This is a sincere request
gail
Christmas and the holidays automatically add a lot of stress to what is already here for me.........

Land of OZ, CT(Zone 6a)

Gail...sometimes it's our obsessions that keep us going through the tough times. Please do not stop posting. You need us and we need you! If you stop posting, I'll stop posting! There...see what you've started!!!!!!!! LOL!

(Zone 1)

Gail, I will be keeping you in my thoughts and prayers.

When one is in pain and agony with an illness, it is so hard to be in good spirit's all the time. I think we ALL need "gentle" reminders at times to try and be more loving, caring individuals. Hey, we are only human and some of us (like me) sometimes needs MORE than a gentle reminder ... like a kick in the rear! LOL.

Gail, you have been sincere in your apology regarding your lapse in judgement, and I think everyone here has big enough hearts to forgive you! Take care of yourself and please don't stop posting entirely. If you happen to be having a good day, or even a few good minutes during the day ... stop in and say hi. We are here for you, and we treasure your good advice regarding growing these lovely plants called Gessie's! Oh ... and I can't imagine going a day without seeing your gorgeous pictures!

Well, actually I will be MIA for awhile. Will try to get on and post when I can the next few weeks but it's a busy time. My dad has been in the hospital for about a month and a half now and was transferred to the Veteran's Nursing Home. His cancer has spread to the bones and we aren't sure how much time he has left. We are going to travel over to the other side of the state to visit him for a couple of days, not taking the computer so if no one hears from me after this weekend, I should be back on line after the holidays. Will try as time allows, to pop in to say hello.

Many Blessings to you all this holiday season and of course, wishes for good health, peace, happiness and prosperity in the coming year!

Lin

Jasper, AR(Zone 7a)

Gail-- please do pop in when you feel like it--Living alone out in the boonies i know i would be lonely without my friends here at DG. It is hard to be sociable when you're in pain. So when the pain makes you crabby--just say Hi and post a pic, with out you I would be oblivious to the allure of streps! I fully intend to blame you for my plant stands increasing in number AND filling up--so you better be on here to take the blame^_^ Lin-- you and your family will be in my prayers. Losing a parent is so very very hard.

(Zone 1)

Thanks HGran. It was very hard losing my dear mom almost 4 years ago. My dad has never been real close to any of his six kids. There is a lot of resentment with a couple of my brothers and sisters from him not being there for the family when we were growing up. I learned to forgive a long time ago and feel he must have done the best he knew how. Even though I'm not real close to him, he is my dad and I love him and pray that he is kept from pain and suffering. I haven't seen him since a year ago Thanksgiving and he has gone downhill a lot the past few years. He is almost 84 years old,has smoked since the age of 13 or 14 and didn't have any real health problems until a couple of years ago. He began having problems a couple of months ago, drove himself to the closest hospital about 2 miles from where he lives. They found he had a blockage, they had to do a colostomy, removing his colon and he was in that hospital for about 3 weeks. Next thing I knew, I called him and he told me he was at the Veterans hospital (where all his doctors are located.) He apparently got a friend to drive him to the VA Hospital which is about 10 miles away. He was in that hospital for a couple of weeks and he wanted to go home. He told me they wanted to move him to a nursing home for a month but he didn't want that. They found out he lived alone and didn't want him going home. I told him maybe he could consider going into the nursing home for rehab .... just try it for a week to ten days! He said, maybe that would be okay. So, he's been in the nursing home about two weeks now. Last week he got the diagnosis that the cancer had spread to his bones but he is not forthcoming with much information to any of us kids. He is excited about us coming to visit. My oldest sister and her husband are driving over from South Florida and will meet my DH and I there for a few days. I decided we will do Christmas with him this weekend. I bought and decorated a little tree, have all of his gifts wrapped, a stocking stuffed full of little non essentials as well as candy and the scratch off lotto tickets he loves! I called and spoke to a nurse and asked about his roommate to check to see if it was okay to take candy to him too. The nurse said it would be great, so I stuffed a stocking with toiletries and candy and stuff for him too. I am baking cookies to take to the nursing staff too and I have a bag full of candy canes and chocolates to pass out to other patients.

I know you will make everyone happy with the goodies!! Well I made my trip to town--NOW I get to poke holes in bunches of little solo cups to plant all the leaves that came today^_^ What a great way to spend the evening!! You know you are plant obsessed when you plan your grocery budget to include something for the plants--this week I need a light--last week I got the stand. Oh yeah-- have 2 more plant shipments coming this week too.

(Zone 1)

Isn't it funny how we can figure plants or plant "stuff" into our grocery budget? hmm ... I just don't know if I could give up Donuts or Ice Cream though, for a plant or plant supplies? Oh yes ... sure I can! ^_^

South, TX

I love to get on my pet forums and this forum when I do not feel well. It was so nice when I had surgery and on bad days.

I love my pets, AV's, and outside gardening. I used to also be able to do lots of stained glass and other things. I do less of that now, get too tired.

Gail, I hope your problems will resolve soon and 2009 will be much brighter!!!

Highland, IL

Ok,I'd have a hard time giving up the icecream.

Gail, I hope you are feeling better very soon!!!

Williston, ND

streps are an obsession i dont care to give up(taking in violets even when i dont want more is something I can hope to give up one day

JIM

Wytheville, VA

Hey Sally! I have pets, streps, outside gardens, stained glass & I get tired too!
I get tired just reading it! LOL! Hang in there! Look at all the wonderf ul things you can do.

Land of OZ, CT(Zone 6a)

GEEZ! This wasn't meant to be a depressing thread. It's our obsessions that get us through the day! Obsessions come and go, wax and wane, but as long as they are not harmful to others, they give us something to look forward to--especially during the bleak times. Embrace your obsession(s)!! They are a good thing^_^

Jasper, AR(Zone 7a)

Well said Phoebe---I sure am looking forward to my boxes of plants/leaves!! ^_^ got one box yesterday. Getting worried about the other tho--tracking says it left Denver on 12/9 :( I can (and Have) driven it in 14 hrs--of course it is the one with the plants I REALLY lusted after.

Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

Gran, Are you really receiving plant shipments now? I thought about placing an order recently but was afraid it was too cold. Thought it would be better to wait until warmer weather, but if you're doing it.....

Speaking of obsessions... LOL.

Sarah

Jasper, AR(Zone 7a)

I got an order from cedarcreek yesterday that was perfect in every way. The heat pack was still toasty warm. The order I am worried about wasn't s'posed to go out until Jan-- but she sent it anyway with a 72 hour heat pack-- the window for safe delivery on that one is getting a little narrow. I will be so upset--I REALLY wanted Senk's Fruit fly. Check the shipping info on the place you are ordering from-- some only ship express mail--too expensive--but the places I bought from all guarantee safe delivery. Have to admit-- it sure brightened up my day to get those leaves yesterday!! Baby moonbeam is just TOO cute. I have never tried rooting anything that small--but cross your fingers for me!

Ottawa, IL(Zone 9a)

don't worry about fruit fly, if you don't get it i have it, let me know.
mrsbonnie

Land of OZ, CT(Zone 6a)

Moonbeam IS too cute! Gran, Did you get fruit fly on ebay? Are you the one that outbid me? LOL I've had good luck with heat packs, but I try not to order from too far away. Luckily Rob's, and several other well known vendors are only one state away! I'm picking up a package today if I don't get iced in. It is coming from KY

I wish the order I placed on 11/7 would ship. She doesn't use heat packs, so is waiting for a 'heat wave' before shipping. I may not even see it for months!

Land of OZ, CT(Zone 6a)

There have been plenty of shipping "windows" since then in the NE--where was it coming from?

Williston, ND

i got a new strep i bought on ebay today, lilriver is his ebay name,I recommend him
highly

JIM

Whitsett, NC(Zone 8a)

phoebesviolets - it is coming from Pittsford, NY. Weather channel shows the temps there will creep into the 40's on Sunday & Monday, but goes back to 30's-20's until Friday.

South, TX

Oh, Kivit, I was not saying I am sad about being tired if I do too much. I am thrilled to be so much better than I used to be!

Land of OZ, CT(Zone 6a)

Pittsford sounds like one of those upstate NY towns, they get colder earlier d/t their proximity to the Great Lakes. What if you offered to send her a heat pack to use to ship your items? Of course you would have to bear responsibility for any cold damage. That is, if you would rather not wait.

Jasper, AR(Zone 7a)

Yes I got fruit fly on ebay--if I outbid you Phoebe--I'm sorry^_^ Mrsbonnie-- thanks for your offer--we will hope it arrives Ok-- if not I will take you up on it--maybe I will have something you want and we can trade. I went to WM today and they didn't have the 24" fixtures--but home depot did ---of course it is what I call a "kit" (assembly required) so that is my project this evening--more constructive than examining all my seed pots and leaves again (i do it every morning too) with the magnifying glass looking for babies (I didn't lie when I said I was obsessed)

Ottawa, IL(Zone 9a)

sounds like you have everything under control. lol
mrsbonnie

Williston, ND

Bonnie, later when it warms up,Id love a start of fruit fly if you can

JIM

Whitsett, NC(Zone 8a)

I got an email on Saturday from NY - she is sending my box out today! I have no idea what plants I'm getting . . . kinda like suprises!

Williston, ND

make sure it dont come through here,it was -28 here this morning, they say it feels like
-47 cold cold cold,
JIM

Why will my African Violet not bloom??????????????

Whitsett, NC(Zone 8a)

Unfortunately, Jim, I can't control the USPS. I will cross my fingers, though, that it doesn't! DH just called from Lubbuck - the temp is in the 30's, but the "feel" temperature is at 1 degree.

synda - how long have you had it, what kind of growing conditions, etc? Can you post a picture?

Williston, ND

repot it,

Jasper, AR(Zone 7a)

Be careful with any shipment--I finally received mine-mailed Mon 12-8 on Sat 12-13. Everything in the box(including my fruit fly) was frozen. The tracking info was never updated-- but it "left" Denver on 12-9 and apparently traveled by donkey to Ar. Our temps right now are 18°-- this time yesterday it was 50°--sleet and freezing rain now. I am going to finish cleaning up my Lowes rescue AV's, potting up the extra crowns and then repot a bunch of begonia seedlings. That is the great thing about living in an unfinished cabin-- I will set my tv tray up in front of the tv and pot away. My floors are concrete board and/or chip board and I have a shop vac^_^. If I lose power I also have a broom and dustpan and can clean it the old fashioned way;) In any event the farthest I have to go is the front porch for firewood. I am thinking of staying in my Jammies ALL day-- and oh yeah my first batch of homemade kahlua is ready... so when I am done (DH is in Chicago) my little chihuahuas and I can snuggle by the fire. LOL Jim, I can do this for the 2 or 3 days of bad weather we are s'posed to have --but would go insane with winters like you get!

Land of OZ, CT(Zone 6a)

Homemade Kahlua, jammies, a wood fire, and AV's? Sounds like heaven to me!

Whitsett, NC(Zone 8a)

Homemade Kahlua? Recipie please . . . ^_^

Jasper, AR(Zone 7a)

absolutely!!! I am not too sure if I should post it outright-- but it is on it's way via d-mail--if anyone else wants it lmk. I have made several versions of this and the recipe I have now is by far the best and most like the name brand.
