Had my tonsils out, need advice...

I'm not sure if this is the right place to put this post or not, or if there even is a right spot for this. I tried to find some other website just for tonsils but I didn't really have any luck.
I am 32 years old, and I just had my tonsils out, the Friday after Thanksgiving. I am still in enough pain that I am taking OTC pain med. The Dr prescribed me some pain med yesterday at my post op apt but after reading about the side effects I didn't fill it. It causes nausea, dizziness and fatigue in 15% of people who take it! She also gave me a steroid to help with swelling because the swelling is still really bad.
So anyway, I am feeling much better and able to swallow now without being in extreme pain. But I have questions about the anatomy of it now.
Please don't anyone laugh at me LOL
I feel like my tongue is longer. ? I am thinking maybe the tonsils 'held' my tongue back farther in my mouth and now that they are gone the tongue relaxed more and comes forward. It feels really weird and also I still can't talk plain. I noticed also a skin tag at the back of my mouth in the corner where my tongue meets my cheek.. This is very painful and food catches in it. Which leads to my next problem and this is my most disturbing yet. When I swallow, food goes up into the sides of my throat and packs there, instead of going down my throat. I had to go to the Dr yesterday and have her clean this out, it was so nasty. She said I would basically have to learn to swallow right and use my tongue again. Like it was my fault that I wasn't using it right?! Like I've swallowed for 32 years lady!!!!!
I ate a piece of cheese last night and it wedged up into the corner again and just stuck there. I tried gargling and Q-tips and everything. So how far does this hole go? Is it open clear through to my ear? When I swallow water it feels like it goes back under my ear? I hope I'm not being too confusing. My husband had his tonsils out after we were married, but he didn't have this problem. I am just curious if others have experienced any of this? Does it get better? Any advice? I have lost 6 pounds so far from not being able to eat and today I only had about 3 bites of yogurt. I am STARVING!
I could not IMAGINE putting a child through this. This has been far worse pain for me than child birth was. And labor only lasted 24 hours for me, this has been for days. The worst experience I have ever had. :(

Frilly, there is a Forum for medical issues. I had to use it when my mom was having troubles and they were very helpful.

Here's the link to it.

There are Drs. and nurses there that will be able to help you. ☺

Hope you get help...this doesn't sound right I had mine out when I was 35(52 now). So 85% DID NOT have those problems with the medication...why go with the minority????

Frankly, I would get another DR's opinion.

I went with the minority LOL because medicine tends to always make me sick. The first prescription he gave me made me sick, so that is why I had to use OTC instead. But then at my post op apt he gave me something else. But when I looked up info about it, 15% of people get sick, so I figure I better play it safe. The OTC at least makes it bearable and I couldn't even imagine vomiting with my throat hurting like it does, so I don't want to take that chance.

I did not realize there was a forum specifically for health issues, I will look into that.
The steroids the Dr gave me have helped ALOT. The swelling has gone significantly the past couple days, which has lessened the pain considerably.

I guess my question at this point is about swallowing food. It still lodges in the side of my throat, like up inside and just sort of sticks in there and won't come out. Am I doomed? I guess it is not normal?

I will check out the other forum,
Thanks!

Doesn't seem normal to me. When I had foot problems and had to have surgery, I started having these horrible shooting pains across the top of my foot. When I asked the Dr. about it, he said I was compensating for the pain I had earlier so now I had to re-learn to walk again. I was making my own foot cramp!

I completely understand, I get stuff caught there, too. Not nearly as much as you do. You did have something in the way of your tongue making you swallow differently.

I don't seem to be helping, just adding my 2 cents. ☺

Good luck again and let us know what you find on the other forum.

Interested in what kind of foot surgery you had?
I have flat feet that are very painful and had an implant called Kalix to correct my right foot.
It was a nightmare. Terrible pain for 3 years before finding out the Dr that put it in no longer practices. So I went to a new Dr and he did X-rays and said it was put in wrong. How wonder it hurt like crazy and DIDN'T work of course. What a waste of my time, money and PAIN.

I have bone spurs, both feet, bottom and back. My REAL problem is my feet tend to heal better than meant to. Meaning...tendon fibers re-attach and bone/scar tissue grows to replace that which was removed. I've been ther, done that 5 times now.

Sorry about the bad "Dr."! Thank goodness he's no longer practising.

How are you feeling now?

Still having problems getting food to go down instead of 'all over' when I swallow, still having ear pain.
But other than that MUCH better. I can eat finally!
Thank you for asking :)

Glad you're feeling better. I had mine out when I was 5. I don't remember much but the ice cream! LOL

WOW I could not imagine how that burned! :0

I could not actually eat anything sugary or cold. It hurt too much. I just stayed with soft solid bland food at room temp. Like canned carrots, small pieces of hamburger and bread. I found that liquid or soft foods just went all over in the back of my mouth and I couldn't control how they went down as well. The solids I could swallow right down the middle of my throat and avoid sloshing it all over the cut areas.
For some reason yogurt burned, maybe the bacteria in it? The cold stuff just caused my throat to cramp up and not move. Warm water was all I could manage to drink. ick!

My doctor said a tonsillectomy is no different for a child than an adult.

I have always heard it is easier for children, but now I am not so sure.
They are cutting out the same tissues, sometimes even more cutting depending on how enlarged the tonsils are. Adults tend to have smaller tonsils, so I would think less tissue cutting to heal.
The pain would of course be felt the same in a child and it would still take a couple weeks to heal.
I think everyone just reacts differently and heals at a different rate. I also understand that there are several different methods of removing them.
I caught a cold afterward and sneezed several times the first few days. LET ME TELL YOU, that hurt like........
There is just no other way to describe it. Delirious pain that sent me reeling. I learned to gently blow my nose the moment I felt like I was going to sneeze and that usually warded it off.
Anyway, this was quite a miserable experience for me.

(Zone 7a)

OUCH!!! Can't imagine the pain from sneezing! Glad for you that's over. Whew!
