Ok...I'm taking the Plunge

Lawrenceville, GA(Zone 7b)

Here's the floor.

I also go one wall up over the weekend. I changed the wall dimensions from 5 feet to 8 feet, so I am comfortable when I go in.

Wonderful! You work fast!!! Are you doing this alone or do you have helpers?

Lawrenceville, GA(Zone 7b)

Just me and my son.

I think the roof may give me some problems though. I changed the wall height from 5 feet to 8 feet. After we got one side up. I thought to myself "Dang. How am I going to get the roof on???"

Stay tuned. You all may get a chuckle out of the coming events.

I am already chuckling...Is that bad? I am laughing with you RIGHT!

Lawrenceville, GA(Zone 7b)

My wife took one look at it. Shook her head and walked back up the hill.

When I came up later on, she asked what type of chickens I was planning on putting in there. I said I didn't know. She just looked at me with eyes that said" God I love you but you're an idiot!"

I think she thinks I planning on raising some sort of super chicken or something.

I'll post a pic later on.

Hey BB, you can call my DH for advice with getting the roof on. He did the joists for my shed by himself. Its 12 x 16 and the wall height is 7 or 8 ft. Here's a pic from just after he got them up.

Hey B.B. I can so relate. My wife, well who knows what she thinks. Thanks for a great laugh, and good luck with your adventure. My hat is off to you and who really expects a wife to understand. LOL. Haystack

The chicken palace is coming right along. Couldn't get out there on the weekends because of the rain. And we have to split our time between this project and the drip system we are putting in.

I think it looks good for a couple of amateurs.

Question: The walls are 8 feet so how high can I go with my nesting boxes?

I have some other questions but will post to a new thread

My chickens brood low, nest medium, and perch high. The boxes are just below eye level. I've seen older chicken houses with boxes at about counter level (3')... Did you check out Tour deCoup for ideas?

Hey BB: Looking good, real good. Nesting boxes should be 18 inches - two feet off of the floor. If You put them to high the ladies will think they are for roosting and Poop in them all the time. Just one thought about the roosts. Keep them so that the birds using them is about a foot below or a foot above eye level, birds are very bad about pecking at your eves if they can look right into them. Seriously. Good luck as you continue your project. It really is looking great. Haystack

Great job!

Hi Everyone:

Well for awhile there things looked grim. Our chicken palace was looking pretty bad. This is what happens when computer geeks try to do carpentry

So I had to call in the cavalry. We had a series of layoffs at the homebuilder I work for. One to the guys called me up and asked me to fix his wife's computer in exchange for some work. Told him about my chicken disaster and this is what he has done so far

Looks great doesn't it. We have the siding up on 3 sides and he will finish the front tomorrow and shingle the roof. He is even building the nesting boxes and perches!

Once he's done tomorrow. I just have to build the pen. I am giving them a pen of 16x12. That should be plenty of room for 25 birds, shouldn't it. Fence will be 6 feet high but I am not going to cover it. So they will be quasi free range. We do have some hawks but not many so we'll see what happens.

This guy did a fantastic job. Even though he wanted to barter, I gotta give him some cash because we didn't have an equal investment of time. He even gave me some of the materials like the door. I have been recruiting him hard to join our farmers market and he's joining this year. A lot of skilled and talented people are out of work in this country. So if you need to have something done and can afford to pay or trade services or items for it, this is a great time.

I will post pics when it's finished

Wow BB its looking good. I really like that full sized door next to the chicken door. I may need to hire your carpenter, if DH doesn't have time to build my (much smaller) coop and run. I saw an article in the Feb. Georgia gardening mag about quick fencing - it was actually an arbor with a fence to grow vines on, using 6 ft. metal U posts. I'm thinking about using that for a run. I am actually more worried about racoons as far as predators are concerned. If you have cover, hawks shouldn't be a big issue, especially with standard size chickens. Keep the pics coming.

Hey Becky!

That chicken door is actually a window I brought to be a window. He suggested using it as the chicken door. We took the screen out and night, I'll just pull the window down to keep out predators.

I found a guy who sells chickens in Lawrenceville off 124

Great job BB, I loved the one you did, it had character. You and your friend did a good job, love the idea of the window as the chicken door.

Elbridge, NY(Zone 5a)

That is awesome BB!!!! Though I have to agree with Luvs, yours sure had character. Friends like that are keepers! hehehe Computer work is not cheap though. I have had work done and found that out first hand. Barter is great, especailly in this economy. I cant wait to see it all complete with run AND chickens!!! woohoo! You are really doing it! Congrats. The house is beautiful. (I put chicken wire ontop of my 10X20X6 ft run. To keep them in ((because they indeed can fly out)) and to keep preditors out). Nice job!

Hey and poultry living with you yet?
