Boy, did I get a surprize this morning

Williamsburg, MI(Zone 4b)

I went out to feed my silkies and found an empty eggshell in the food pan. knew that one of my hens had been broody for a while, but I never thought she could hatch out babies in the WINTER! She manages and I have two tiny black chicks in her nest box. I put a heat lamp out there for them and we'll see what happens. I'd move them into the house, but have a porqupine in the play pen right now and the studio is full of Christmas stuff. I think I'll put the remote thermometer out there so I can monitor them and bring them in if need to.

(Tia) Norman, OK(Zone 7a)

WOW congratz, you got babies!!!!!

Lodi, CA(Zone 9b)

Well how cool is that!!?? Please provide pics! What a wonderful surprise! Congratulations!

Sue, RI(Zone 6a)

Congrats!! What a great holiday gift from one of your girls!
Can you add a pic of the porqupine?!

Oxford, NS(Zone 5b)

How sweet! I think they should get wintery names, like snowflake or blizzard or perhaps Noel. Flurry? Frosty? I'd love to see the porcupine too!

Elbridge, NY(Zone 5a)

porqupine!!!! neat!
Babies!!! neat! I am jealous!!!
But happy for you! I agree...winter names!
Frosty or oatmeal or something cool.
I also agree...pitures are needed for awww factor!

Lumberton, TX(Zone 8b)

I must be overtired and overhungry -- I glanced at sewincircle's post and thought it said "porcupine meat!!!"

Yay, baby chickies!! Take pictures!!

Clarkson, KY

Definite winter names!! Why am I thinking "Dirndls and Petticoats" Gah!! These babies are silkies too, right? Picpicpicpicpic.....

Elbridge, NY(Zone 5a)

Elbridge, NY

Wow thats a nice suprise!
I wish one of my hens would
hatch an egg or two on
accident ;] (p.s. I'm sewincircles

Elbridge, NY

I would name them Frosty

I dont know I have a odd
taste in names:]

Newton, AL

congratulations! Hope all goes well.

Williamsburg, MI(Zone 4b)

I think it should be snow and deep. I measured this afternoon and we have 29 inches on the ground. Yuck.

Clarkson, KY

Blizzard and Avalanche?

Elbridge, NY

Wow! that is a lot of snow! the
snow here is hardly covering
the ground! LOL!

Sue, RI(Zone 6a)

It's raining here. Almost 4 inches in the past 24 hours with wind blowing 35 to 50 mph. It's supposed to be out of here by mid-afternoon; so glad it was rain. We are on the warm side of the storm. Thirty miles from here the temps are in the low 30 to mid 30's while we are at 57. Those folks are getting alot of ice building up. Hope everyone stays safe.

Williamsburg, MI(Zone 4b)

Well, the snow has evened out this morning at a nice level 32. We are expecting a warm up with possibility of rain, so we've spent two days shoveling roofs. Now, I am out to clean the chicken coop while I still can. The babies are doing wonderful and all the bidies are fighting over them. I had some left over mealworms from a bird I was rehabbing and tossed a handful in the pen. The rooster announced they were there and all the biddies ran over to make sure the chicks got their fill first. Then it was a feeding frenzy.

Lodi, CA(Zone 9b)

Wow, I can't imagine that much snow! It's going to rain for a week here.. and that's bad enough. :) The mud is coming!

Lodi, United States

And the cold! It is suppose to drop 10 degrees--which will put us into freezing weather.

Oxford, NS(Zone 5b)

Awwww....poor widdle Californians....having to cope with bewow fweezing tempewatures....dey might fweeze der widdle toesies off....better go find some socks, widdle Californians, and put those fwip-fwops away for a month or two...

Lodi, United States

Do I detect just the faintest whiff of bitterness from our sister of The Great White North?

Oxford, NS(Zone 5b)

Good heavens....I can't imagine.....do you think? Really?! Anything is possible!!! ;-)

Elbridge, NY

ha ha ha
we got more snow over night
but then the temperature went
up to 45 this morning and it
melted it all so now its just wet:[

Proof that H-E-double-hockey-sticks can and does occasionally freeze over! Claire, I know it doesn't compete with what you get, but the real terror here is rednecks who think you drive in this the same way you do on a sunny day in July! The other gripe is that it warms up the next day and so the azaleas think it's spring and then it freezes again and the azaleas are ruined for the year!

But it's so lovely.

Ah yes, we have those drivers here too. The worst is when it's on top of ice already existing on the road.

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 8b)

Try down here the only time in my life time that it froze for a week. Ice everywhere and non of the fools down here could drive on it . Wrecks EVERYWHERE!!!!!

Sue, RI(Zone 6a)

It seems like the worse the weather the worse the drivers! People up here driving SUVs like to pass everyone else when it's snowing.
It's raining right now but the temps are supposed to drop as the day goes on so it's going to turn to sleet then overnight snow then back to rain again!

When I live in upstate New York I was introduced to the local theory that it is not the road conditions per se that are dangerous, it is how long you are in them....so everyone would speed up and drive furiously as soon as the snow started falling. Once when this happened, I was driving on a dangerous country road and suddenly came upon four cars that had recently passed me, all wedged sideways in the ditch. They were fine..so I just drove slowly on.

Elbridge, NY(Zone 5a)

I live in Upstate NY. Fun stuff here.
I hope you waved at least. hehehe!

Lodi, United States

I was too scared to take my hands off the steering wheel:0)

Elbridge, NY(Zone 5a)

I know the feeling. Ice is not drivable even if you have 4WD!
People dont get it though.

Oxford, NS(Zone 5b)

I'll wave on Friday, sewincircle, cuz I'll be driving through on my way up to Nova Scotia.

Clarkson, KY

Dang. The Pecahn Fairy is iced in...

Oxford, NS(Zone 5b)

Maybe she can get herself unstuck by Dec 30, when I shall be back in Iowa, or sometime thereafter....?

Clarkson, KY

Easily plotted, Your Vividness...

Oxford, NS(Zone 5b)

Snicker...."your vividness".....ROTFLMBO.....

Elbridge, NY(Zone 5a)

Claire, I will surely wave back! Stop in if you want. I may be a bit bald from ripping out of hair. (finals) I bet you have a few thin spots now as well. hehehe! Nova Scotia? Whats there, family? So Friday you are all done with School? yeah!!!! You must be relieved.

Oxford, NS(Zone 5b)

Yes, my parents are in Nova Scotia so I am going home to surprise them for the holidays. Looking forward to it! My last final is on Thursday morning until 1 pm and then I have about 50 errands to run, and then we hit the road! Yeah!!! I think we're going to leave Thursday early evening and get a chunk of driving out of the way so that we arrive at a more reasonable time on Saturday. At least that is the theory...

Elbridge, NY(Zone 5a)

Good theory. I just checked the weather for friday. They are calling for a mild storm Friday. Just take it easy. I am glad you can see all your family on break! When do you go back to school? Jan?

Oxford, NS(Zone 5b)

Ugh...mild storms don't sound like fun. We'll go slow and steady.

Back to class Jan 20. They give us about a 1 month break in law school. Longest break I ever had!
