Earth shoes are back and so are bell bottoms.
So are herringbone and tweeds.
I can get out my old favorites but I can't seem to fit the old caboose in those jeans like I used to!
Allergy diagnosis - HELP please
Yeah, April, next time spit it out!
Her GP has said eczema from early on. The allergist, today, said contact dermititis. They have a cream they use on her. She also has a large hemangioma (sp) by her soft spot and a couple on her back. Her hair has grown enough that the hemangioma isn't as visible. She would get looks and questions about it. She is just the cutest thing, that you could eat her up.
HMMM, I'm wondering now that you said that. the other DGD that has a peanut allergy has asthma and now has to have daily treatments. She had a recent bout and was on a 10 day steroid treatment that really affected her personality and behaviour. So, now has this daily treatment. I forgot what med they said was used. She, however, does not have skin issues, just the peanut allergy. Related issues do you think?
My greatniece had a skin reaction to mangoes years ago which are related to PI, too. Well, she didn't think about the possibility that mango would be in a tropical smoothie. She ended up in the ER and now carries an epipen with her. She is a senior in high school. Her younger sister, EmmaSage, who is 7 and also has Down's Syndrome ( Trisomy 21) didn't like being told 'NO' by her older sister so she told Greta that she was going to put mango in her mouth. My niece was impressed that Emma's thought processes equated Greta's being sick with the mango. She didn't like the thought, but realized that Emma is thinking about cause and effect. Kinda funny, but NOT really. If you want to read a great blog go to www.emmasage.blogspot.com

Yeah it is hard to tell with the allergies what will hit the airways or not. I have learned that when the kids show up in the ER - they often (not always but often) have dark circles under their eyes, eczema and mom and dad tell about misc. food and other allergies. The airways react by constricting and leaking and swelling...wheezing occurs.. the nasal passages by swelling...leaking.... constricting....(and sneezing occurs) the skin by swelling, leaking... sometimes itching... the bowels by constricting and also swelling and leaking....(until it exits) eyes tear(leak) and swell and itch.. so when you take it all apart--- the reactions are very similar but the location of the reaction oftentimes will dictate how serious it is... eye lids swell ---not so bad....airways swell ----bad....
missingrosie, thanks for that explanation. I'd never thought of it like that. My lettuce allergy affects my bowel, no problems with the airways. When I was a child I got hives...all over my body several times. But that stopped and probably just moved to another part of my body. I don't know what caused those reactions.
Jan, so glad the wheat has been eliminated. I've always been glad it's not on my list. So hard to avoid and so much special baking and extra work for mom.
Yup - it is all in the area it impacts. Have you grown your own lettuce??? Maybe it is the chemicals in the field that the major growers use. Lettuce holds a lot of water - it can also be the 'bolus' of water that your gut doesn't like. I never thought of lettuce being comprised of things that potentiate allergy - but I guess anything is possible.
We have found that 'iceberg' lettuce makes gas, whereas romaine or other leaf lettuces don't seem to have that same effect.
wow the (supposedly) simplest of all lettuce 'the white bread' lettuce - seems to have a hidden side. I wonder what is in it?
Here some thought..Iceberg Lettuce is not good for rabbits..green leaf or Romaine is what you should feed them. Maybe the bunnies know something we don't?
This tidbit of info I myself just learned thanks to Sophie.

I've read that Iceberg Lettuce is one of the highest pesticide carriers and should never be eaten. I don't order salads if they are made w/ Iceberg.

That little Sophie is just full of info. Now, I need to go see her own thread to get the first of several 'fixes' throughout the day. LOL She is just too cute, pixie.
I avoid the iceberg as best I can, too.
No more iceberg for me!
OK I went to look for the iceberg issue since that is all my DH will eat. It just contains more water...so for bunnies may cause loose stools, and maybe less nutrition as compared to other leafy veggies. I went to several sites that look at pollutants etc., and also checked the comparison for ecoli and samonella etc. Not more of an offender than the other field grown greens. It really is just an issue of more bang for the buck..with the other lettuce produces - you get more nutrition and more fiber - less water.
Our little DGDs look so much alike, Celeste. About the same age as well. Don't you just love their snuggles?
Interesting about bunnies and iceberg.
All this is fascinating! My sister has been allergic most of her life to various things, including rabbit hair, nuts and all uncooked veggies and fruits except iceberg lettuce. Nice, SAFE iceberg lettuce. Now I'm learning it's not? I don't care for the stuff myself; I prefer food where you can actually taste the fact it grew in dirt.
Its all in color for the vitamins and how and what its grown in is what your getting. Remember the scare this summer people were getting sick and they said it was lettuce and tomatoes. They coudnt find the source. Come to find out it wasnt even lettuce and tomats it was Jalapeno's (if my memory serves me right).
I am not allergic to nothing serious. I have had 2 attacks with seafood in the 80's. My hands, feet swelled up and breathing became hard. Oh and hives! I kept eating it and I still eat it. If I had another bout - I would still eat it till I couldnt no more........
My husbands cat - I pat it and touch my face, my eyes will itch. Wash hands and face and it goes away. It is the protien in the cats salavia that causes it. Some people will say they are allergic to dust. Well its not the dust or the dust mite. It is the dust mite Dung...
Wierd world...........
the proteins are in the urine, saliva, dander etc. With the saliva...the cat licks to groom..the 'spit' dries... and then it becomes airborne. Dust mite poop doesn't get airborne..it is more likely on the arms of the chairs,,,the mattresses...your eyebrows....mustache...anywhere there is human skin that has been deposited.
I think what confuses folks is that there may be a sensitivity to certain things..sort of an intolerence, but not a true allergic response. Like I have folks tell me that breathing is affected because they are 'allergic' to perfume, or cleaning sprays, or smoke from candles, etc. But the chance that its a true allergic reaction are slim to none -- but I do believe that their breathing is affected because they are sensitive to these things that act as airway irritants.
I hear you , Rosie - both my kids have asthma and are literally 'allergic' to certain things (dust mites, cat, dog, etc, dander) and then there's DD#1 with celiac disease, which is NOT an 'allergy' to wheat (although that's also possible). In people with CD, the gluten that occurs in wheat (and rye and barley) is actually toxic to their small intestines. It's not a case where you get sensitized to the protein and then it gets worse after each subsequent exposure, which is what's happening with April's almond and Victor's yellow jackets.
