Epi's Currious Growths.

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

Queen Of The Night is relatively new to me. This QOTN bloomed for me earlier this year. Now being indoor, I recently noticed two cynclical stalks growing out in the pot. There is no flattened leaf pattern, just a thick naked stalk coming up from the base of the plant. What are these? Will the "leaves" develope on these stalks later? I also noticed there are several airieal roots on this currious stalks.

Its normal. There will be "leaves" on it later. I think it is how it "travels" through a tree.

I have seen stems like that but not as large as the one in the pic. They seem to fill out with time.

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

Thank you Sandy & TLT. I'm so in love with those epis. Every little thing happens about them is a whole new discovery. lol. Thanks for your input.

Nassau County, NY(Zone 7a)

Yeap sis, normal, I actually like the look. I've read that they are actually roots, do not know how true that is. Mine only have a few!

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

Clemen, Sandy's explanation makes sense, the aireal 'roots' aid their growth when they climb trees in their natural habitat. I'll see if I can get a good photo of the roots. BBL.

Well mine are not climbing trees, he he! But it makes sense!

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

I'm thinking of using some type of epi's support along these tall growing branches so when they get heavier, they won't break as I move them around. :-)

Here are the 3 roots that I noticed, they're white, fleshy looking roots, cool things!

They are hard to brake. The epi oxy is one tough plant. I thought about using a tomato cage for mine.

Chickenville, FL(Zone 9a)

That is really cool, I don't remember ever seeing one do that. Thanks for sharing that photo!

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

Looks like this time of year (less sun light, cooler indoor temp.) is favorable for the Epi. Oxy. to keep sending out these type of growths. There are so many more of these canes on them.

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

Some canes comes out directly from the older canes, likes this:

Others likes the pix before last, and this one. The new growth sprouts directly out of the leave itself.

Aren't they neat Kim?

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

Clemen, yours bloomed this year too. Do they do that? I meant do they put out growth like these?

Editted to add: Clemen, I meant last year since we're only 2nd day onto the new year. lol.

Kim, mine is into her third winter, but she is less than 3 years old I guess, she bloomed this past summer and she was less than 2 years old. I did noticed last winter when she put on that growth. She is growing again, I would say she is in a green house or something, but she is not, there is no heat where she is, bright light and 50 degrees, she has tons of those shoots now, she is growing like a weed and hardly any water and no fertilizer. I love her, my friend told me the other day she was ugly, sniff, to me she is gorgeous and different looking, then again, we are plant lovers!

Lily_love, I use those plastic tomato stakes to hold mine up. Here is a picture.

I don't have much new growth in the winter, but they grow like gangbuster in the spring and summer.

Great picture. I have few of the spikes growning on mine, I need to figure out why some do and some don't. My mother plant is 10 times bigger than that and it only put out 2 spikes this summer but lot of new leaves.. I have 4-5 pots of epi oxy so will try different lighting this summer.

Sandy the epi not.

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

Clemen, mine must be a few year olds itself. I was lucky enough to have found a 5 gallons Oxy. last spring, and it promptly flowered for me last summer.

Thanks Lili, for the helpful staking instruction. I'm going to have to try some for the new growths, some of them are rather tall, more than 3-4 feet tall so far. Thanks all for your input and visiting/discussing our Epi's growth.

I thought I'll give y'all a head up. HD and other box stores sometimes will carry these lovely plants in the "House plants" departments. Look what I've found this past fall. A rhipsalis I think.

How weird that Nicole's grows in the Spring and Summer and mine it the winter right? Must be the difference in climates. I keep mine under a canopy all summer in the middle of a table, here is her this past summer, Need to take a pic of her now with all of that new growth and shoots!

Kim, someone gave me a cutting of that plant you just got and I believe they said was an epi, I really do not know. The cutting was small and I cut into three pieces and it now has tiny growth. I like the shape of the leaves!

Kim it is one of the "ric-rac" epis and a great find.

Clemen that is a very health plant.

Darn my HD does not carry any epis. But I did make a great find at a nursery. A in bud epi, did lose a lot of the buds but it is blooming away

How pretty Sandy!

Kim I looked at my tiny cutting at the name tag says Cereus Epi Angulare! I wonder if that is yours, they looked the same.

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 8b)

I found a broken off piece of it!!!!!!

Plant it plant it!

I have 3 of them in a large hanging basket.

Clemen, I only water mine about once a month in the winter and it's sitting in my sunroom. It's cold in there but it keeps the plant from getting frost. My guess would be that mine goes dormant in the winter due to cold room. I've never really looked at the temp requirement.

I will have to look around in the houseplant section when I visit HD or Lowe's next time.... as if I need more plants. I did buy another schlum at Publix yesterday. Beautiful red. Happened to have a tag on it that said 'Harmony' Variety S-933-9 PPAF. I haven't looked up the PPAF to see what it is. Anyway, one of the Publix marked theirs down from $40 to $9 and the other one hadn't. But I told her about the other one store having theirs marked down and she marked one plant down for me. It is a humongous plant, over 2ft tall, full of blooms.

Check out the ACE hardware stores if you have them there. Ours has some epi's and dragon fruit.

North of Atlanta, GA(Zone 8a)

We have to go to some of the "fancy" ACE in order to find cool plants. The one close to our house doesn't carry that much plants.

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 8b)

If you ever get to St Simon's Island the Ace there has nice plants not many epis but a lot of nice plants.

Marks, MS(Zone 7b)

Personally, I don't like the look of all these long stalks, so once a year, I cut all the stalks off (just the stalks, as they bloom on old growth). I take the stalk that I cut off, and cut it into a bunch of about 1 inch pieces. I stick these back into the dirt. they put off new regular leaves, and make the plant fuller.

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

Lismil, one inche sections? Do you completely burry them into the soil? Or do you leave the poke out of the top soil? Thanks for your information.
Kim

Nassau County, NY(Zone 7a)

No ace here, sniff or those great deals, NY state too expensive!

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 8b)

Oh well they rest of us will just have to share!!!!

Oh I may be buying more epis. LOL I have gotten the order below 100.00 LOL Still a week and a half till the money comes so hop I can get it down lower.

Sandy the epi nut.

Nassau County, NY(Zone 7a)

Sandi Wren you are really the epi nut, lol!

Marks, MS(Zone 7b)

they might be a bit more then one inch....I was just guesstimating...lol...but yes...just bury the bottom, and leave the top sticking out. Most ppl let theirs dry and callous over for a few days to a week, but I have had no problems with just shoving them right back in the soil. I dont really pay attention to how deep I bury them or how much is sticking out honestly, but, theres so many pieces, Im sure you could experiment.

(Zone 1)

Lovely Epi's everyone!

Wren: You must have a Gazillion Epi's now! I can just imagine how many you will have by the end of 2009, you truly are Sandy The Epi Nut! Your plants are beautiful.

Lily_love: The plant in your post yesterday that you thought was a Rhipsalis? I agree with Sandy, it is an Epi ... looks like this one: http://www.rareflora.com/cryptocereusanth.htm and the listing in Plant files: http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/62665/

I have two Ric Rac's and one looks a bit different from the other. One I've had for years and never knew it was an Epi or that it bloomed! I just thought it was a cool looking cactus of some kind! Last spring I found a bud forming and couldn't believe it. Then one day went out and it was all shriveled - I thought the plant was sick and had something wrong with it. I posted a picture here on the Epi forum and LOL, someone told me it was a night bloomer ... I had just missed the bloom! Can't wait to hopefully get buds this coming spring to be able to see the pretty blooms. And, the blooms are reported to be Fragrant!

That's a really nice one you found. I wish our Home Depot would start carrying some decent houseplants! We have three HD's nearby and it seems like they don't carry and good plants anymore except landscape plants. Our Ace doesn't seem to have plants at all! :(

Hope everyone is having a nice beginning to the New Year and as this year progresses may you all have a happy, healthy and prosperous year!

edited to correct name spelling!

edited to correct spelling again because I still didn't get it right! LOL.

I lost count. I get the list of plants I plant to buy down to 6. Unfortunately I had to have a tooth pulled so that shot down the amount that I have to spend this month. LOL

(Zone 1)

Ouch! I know dental stuff is no fun, I've had my share over the years! Well, regarding your list being shaved down to 6 because of funds ... there's always next month! LOL.

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 8b)

Next month I am hoping to go to Bob Smoley's nursery !!!!!!!! Do you think I should call and warn them I am coming????? LOL

Sandy the Epi nut.

(Zone 1)

Naah ... I wouldn't warn them! You don't want them to sell everything before you get there! LOL. I've never been over there but maybe someday when we are in the area I might have to stop by! I am more into Hoya's than Epi's and it looks like they carry lots of Hoya's too! ^_^

I'm a bit curious and confused though. The DG Watchdog shows their address as Pennsylvania: http://davesgarden.com/products/gwd/c/1695/ But the website shows Dunnellon, Florida: http://www.bobsmoleys.com/ I wonder, do they live in PA, own the nursery in FL and maybe just do all the paperwork or something from their Pennsylvania offices?

hmmm ... after reading all of the feedback in the Garden Watchdog: http://davesgarden.com/products/gwd/comments.php?compid=1695&offset=0 although positives outnumber negatives, there are 11 neutral ratings and it looks like once you order, you have to wait a long time to get your plants. I'm not so sure I would want to order from the website. I'd rather go in person to see exactly what they have in stock and buy in person.
