I have taken some root cuttings and want to root them in water, usually I have good luck, but sometimes they get a fungus growth on them.
What I'm asking is this:
Since the search option is disabled, and I don't have forever to scan thru threads . . .
I'm sure there's already a thread about this, and some time ago I even read about how to treat the cuttings to prevent fungus-a bleach solution was recommended, but I'd like to know what concentration to use so that I don't damage the cuttings in the process.
Can anyone help me with this or link me to a thread with good info please? Thank you so much!
mold on cuttings
OOPS! Not necessarily 'mold', since it's under the water--it's kind of like a jelly type fungus that envelopes the stem.
Rinse the slime (probably algae) off the cuttings with a warm spray, clean the rooting vessel with hot soapy water, and change water every day or two. This should help keep the algae down. Before I started some cuttings of hibiscus I rinsed the cuttings in a weak solution of bleach water (about 10%) for a minute or two. Now several weeks later, I see roots coming on.
So if it is a hardwood cutting I think you will be okay to do what I did but if it is a softwood cutting you may want to do some more searching on the web. It appears the search feature has been disabled on DG (temporarily is what the message says).
Here is one web site I found on bleach as a disinfectant. It appears this is for micropropagation though.

hcmcdole is right. That exactly what ya need to do. That waterneed changed everyday or two for sure. Only thing I do also is add a few drops of hydrogen peroxide to the water they rooting in.
Thank you-and the page you linked me to has lots of great info! I appreciate your help!
G'Day
You might like to try 2ml of Bentadine per ltr of clean water and dip your cuttings in that for disease control. Don't use undiluted Bentadine it will burn the cuttings.
I also read some where that Mercurochrome was good for stopping rot in cacti, I tried it and it worked so you might like to try that on your cuttings. It is ready to use as purchased, just paint it on your cuttings with a small brush or cotton bud.

Thank you! I may even have some Betadine.
green76thumb,
I use Physan 20 to disinfect my zinnia cuttings. http://www.planetnatural.com/site/physan-plant-fungicide.html I sterilize the cuttings by swishing them around in a solution of 1½ teaspoons Physan 20 per gallon (for about 5 minutes, to kill anything potentially bad on the cutting) and then moisten the cutting medium with a more dilute solution of ¾ teaspoon per gallon. If I don't use Physan 20 on my zinnia cuttings, I get a very high mortality from bacterial rot.
I also use it in foliar sprays on my zinnias to combat bacterial leaf spot. When I am spraying some soluble nutrients in a foliar feed, I frequently include Physan 20 in the spray solution as a preventive measure. I wouldn't be without the stuff. For more info, click on these links:

Thank you! I read the info and it sounds awesome. Sounds like a 'got to have' product!
