I have these growing in the ground and I know they are producing tubers. Can they be eaten? I know they are grown for their ornamental foliage. Just double checking
Are sweet potaote vine tubers edible???
That is a good question. I hope someone can answer it for us.
We might be here a while! LOL
Hey ya'll, I've been waiting also! I was hoping someone would bring up whether 'sweet potato vine' was a house plant or the same as the garden crop! I know people grow the garden crop here as an ornamental during the winter cuz of its foliage. (and by the way, It was "ordained" that in 1994 or 95 by the US Ag Dept that the correct spelling/reference for sweet potato would "from this day forth" be spelled as one word, "sweetpotato" to make the difference between talking about the "yam"-type potato and an Irish-type potato that is being described as sweet.) As for me, I'm so lazy I haven't even looked in the DG database for either, have ya'll? Maybe I'll do a search.
I know sweet potato vine, sweet potatoes are classified as Ipomea batatas, unless someone changed it on me. :) I don't know if you can eat them or not, but I don't think I could, knowing the price of them! LOL I have heard others say in the past, you can grow some really cool plants off plain old sweet potatoes. So, I guess this isn't a very good answer, but is some 'food for thought'. Pun intended.
Michele
There is an entree in the data base, but no mention of whether or not it is edible. :(
Well, it looks like they are edible, but I'm with Badseed -- they're too expensive to grow for food, LOL. I'd rather save the tubers and do some trades!

I found the link by going to the search engine Google http://www.google.com and typing in are sweet potato vine tubers edible (with no quotes). I'd say that 95% of the time, Google brings up just the info I need on the first search results page. Great for an infoholic like yours truly! :o)
I love Google!! I usually use hthat search engine...but I just forgot. Thanks GW for the reminder and the links!! I think we all are infoholics and addicts of one plant too many...some too many addictions to count!
I dont know about expensive...I got mine in a trade and OMG!! You should see her now!! I have cut so many vines and tossed them in the compost and have taken cuttings if anyone would like some!! I have all three varieties about 4-5 of each...more of the 'tri color' or 'pink frost'. They are rooted and ready for a warm home for the winter.
I can not wait to see what may be underground this fall when I clean up after the frost hit the plants!! Will take pictures!! This should be fun. Let me know if anybody want any vines!! I guess we will be having "sweetpotaoepie' soon.
My 'marguerite' and 'blacky' are doing great, but my 'fire and ice' never has done much. It's in a hanging basket which tends to be the last one I remember to water, though~
