Daily Pictures Volume 157

Central, KY(Zone 6b)

Hey everyone,

I haven't been doing much bird watching this summer but am getting geared back up now. Pelle has asked me to start the next thread, I'm starting a little early as I will be away from the computer for a while this evening.

All of the beautiful pics from the last thread can be view here: http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/926248/

Here's a pretty female Cardinal to get us started

Great pic sadie! Thanks for starting the new thread!

Man 156 went fast. Nice Cardinal. I really like the Cardinals. Here's a first for me. I saw some activity out the corner of my eye while shooting birds at the feeder at a local park. I was only able to get 1 shot and it was gone - Golden-crowned Kinglet.

Love the pretty Cardinal. I understood Cowbirds did not raise their own young. Love the Kinglet, you can really see the golden-crown in your pic.

This Hawk was hanging around today, which may be why there were not lots of birds around.

Thanks for the new thread Sadie. would love to see one of those Cardinal.
Methodical, your Yellow Crowned Kinglet is so sweet. You really got a great shot of the crown.
Blue Jay are beautiful aren't they GP? I love them.

They don't, but they do apparently keep in contact, and meet up after fledging.

Having said that, the two in the pic both appear to be immatures; the one on the left is a bit further advanced than the one on the right.

Looking forward to seeing the Goldfinches again. Not much activity here, and I seem to remember seeing most of the birds in January and February and later.

Have a guess on the Hawk, Resin? I was thinking Coopers.

Tough one. My thought was Sharp-shin (looks lightweight, and tail corners squarish), but I reserve the right to be wrong!

A few shots I took over the weekend.... clicking sounds of the camera ... not good for holding on to peanuts

I was surprised to see a covey of Gambel's Quail that had a number of juveniles in it. Usually the babies hatch in June or July; so I guess this guy is just a late bloomer. Give him another month and his facial features will be fully defined.

Here are a pair of mature males. Notice the more defined facial features they have.

I finally finished editing my pics from this weekend. Here's another shot of a sandhill crane.

And, here's a whole field full of the cranes.

I managed to get one shot of the cranes in flight that didn't come out blurry.

Here's a northern shoveler (male). I had to be quick on the sutter to catch him with his head above water.

Next, I have a female northern shoveler.

Good to know Resin. I thought the darker one was one of the parents. Now with that said they did seem more like they were fighting in some of my other pics. Here's another shot with what must be 3 youngens.

I think this is a pair of Gadwalls; but I'm not 100% positive on that ID.

This one is a western grebe.

I'm not sure if this one was a large crow or a small raven. It was bigger that most crows I've seen; but not quite as big as a raven.

This big boy was definately a raven.

Last of all, here's a heavily cropped picture of a vermilion flycatcher. He just wouldn't come close enough for me to get a really good picture of him.

Yep, Gadwalls; if they're a pair, they're gay . . . both drakes ;-)

Both are Chihuahuan Raven; note the whitish inner feathering on the throat showing through.
