I travel alot and lately I have not been able to find "celery" for sale, as it seems the veggy has disappeared. Is this a seasonal product?
The local food store did not carry it, as well as, Costco, Sam's and BJs.
Does anyone know about this "celery" shortage?
Several years back, while stopping for Fuel at Buku (Caspian Sea) Azerbaijan, our ground handler asked if I would bring him "Celery" as there was non available in that part of the world, which is understandable. These flights always originate from Sahnghai or Hong Kong through Baku (westbound) to Germany, but I haven't been back to deliver the celery to him.
If this is a celery shortgage, I wonder why, and what other items will disappear in the future? Better start stocking a bunch of MRE's in the basement as well as H2O and other items to protect myself.
Celery Shortage??
Gotta have celery for the stuffing.
Bought some last week at Wegmans
That's the first I heard of that. Salary shortage? Yeah. Maybe celery production has taken a 'dip'! Or we're waiting for the baby celery to be delivered by the 'stork'! Hee hee - couldn't resist.
You should have said that you haven't been 'Baku' to deliver...
Thanks ge1836, better cross the street from Sams Club and hit Wegmans. I was accustomed to buying the celery trimmed in 3 packs at the wholesale clubs.
Maybe I am just paranoid about future food shortages of other important items, as the 3 highest demand items being purchased in the USA are now; food (people stockpiling), Gold and guns. Not a good sign or any confidence in the future outlook for the USA. This high demand on these items stated going through the roof in late september 2008.
Well, that's definitely NOT the beachfront in Baku!
If the flights turn around in Germany, there was plenty of celery in all the shops and markets there last weekend! Plenty here in France, too. Admittedly, it mostly comes from Spain and Italy.
Now, about the problems I am having finding sweet potatoes or yams in time for Thanksgiving, ...
Celery is available on the standard grocery shelves here, perhaps not as much as normal. None of course at the farmer's markets because it would freeze. I have considered growing it, and I remember my step-father saying they kept some in the root cellar most of the winter, in a shallow growing tray and just barely moist.
blueskyes, you are most likely correct about foods disappearing in general... not including just scarcity due to stockpiling. That's one of the reasons groups like Slow Foods http://www.slowfoodusa.org/ with their Ark of Taste http://www.slowfoodusa.org/index.php/programs/details/ark_of_taste/ is drawing so much interest, as are sites for saving and growing heirloom seeds.
By the way, the plan that Homeland Security wrote several years ago includes strong measures against stockpiling.
Celery is ok here. BUT *****Fresh Snow Peas was 5.29 a lb 2 weeks ago and now they are 5.99 a lb***** I thought I was the only paranoid one here with food. In June, July and August I kept saying: next year it is going to be tomatoes, tomatoes and more tomatoes. So I canned quarts and quarts and quarts.
Next year I will have a freezer. Snow Peas, and other stuff and tomatoes, tomatoes and tomatoes.
And speaking of paranoid. It seems those weekly broadcasting test they do on the TV (you know the 3 long beeps and then 3 short beeps) are coming alive. Just about everyday I hear 1 and today I have heard 2 on the same channel now in 24 hours!
Let the "Black Market Begin"
Don't forget the passphrase to get in ..... Baku Bay is built on stilts
I just bought some this morning.
Stilts?
I dunno know ..... ain't passphrases supposed to be nonsensical ..... ??
I just picture someone wanting celery going to the back door of some seedy alley where a peephole opens to a spying eye waiting to hear the code.
There's some in my herb garden under a couple feet of snow, if anyone wants to come dig it out. I only got one bunch cut before the weather hit. It is quite easy to grow - plant and pick when sized to suit.
I picked some up yesterday morning, seemed to be plenty!

I started playing pool way back in the late 60's and early 70's at the Community Center. I would go after school and on weekends. I got hooked. Late 70's ended up going to bars. You know back in the funky hippie days. I was still young and carried a big stick.
I can remember one night at a big bar in VT. Instead of dancing and drinking, I would just drink and play pool. I whooped butt with this older guy. He got ticked off and threw his top dentures on the pool table. HA - the pool stick went WHAP and broke them in half..... Next guys were all over that man holding him back.
That is one little experience in a pool hall/Bar :-)
Than in 1979 I moved to Hollywood Florida and got tied up in bars playing pool. Some lady said - Your good why dont you join our team and go into the tournements? I said sure, Sign me up. I ended up in the South Broward Pool League. The bar was the Dania Village Pub. We played a lot and got to know each other. That was in 1982-83.
Then I joined the National Pool Players Association Inc. It was toughest pool games I ever played in my life. Wicked good players and I was one.
Another instance that is driven into my head. We did tourneys and who ever won 2 out of 3 one. So if you put the 8 ball in on the break that is an instant win. So I broke and poof - the 8 ball flew in. WE WON!!!! Everyone shakes hands and jumps for joy. So then since I won the 1st game I got to break again. POOF the 8 ball went in. We won that round of the tourny. Everyone was shell shocked and in disbelief. The chances of doing that 2 times in a row are very slim.
So hopefully I will come back and post that 100 posts! Later.
