Canyon Lake, TX(Zone 8b)

Thanks

Jerry - Ipomoea alba is the species most commonly known to have a strong fragrance, but there are less commonly known species that are fragrant to various degrees...

I have been trying to locate and introduce into cultivation the less commonly known species which are reported to have a significant fragrance...

I will update my reply later when I can access my list of fragrant species of Morning Glories.

Dany - Thanks for your very quick reply, but I hope that you will also be interested to learn the other species which are reported to be fragrant...

Ipomoea albivenia flowers give off brugmansia-like fragrance when they first open up. On some evenings I could detect their fragrance 10 feet away.

Interesting information about Ipomoea albivenia blooms! I had no idea they were fragrant! Beautiful blooms, too!

I love the scent of Moonflowers! When you have several blooming together at night, the smell is divine! :-)

RON_CONVOLVULACEAE, Thank you, Sir.

Now I am on the hunt!

I went looking for the I. Albavenia and Annie's Annuals' is the only listed vendor (thru D'sG)
that has it listed, but, it is not able to be put on a wishlist. Is anyone familiar with that site enought to say what it means by "not currently in production"? ...is it their term for out of stock?
Curiously yours
:Darren

You can order Ipomoea albivenia seeds from Silverhill Seeds, which is a seed company located in South Africa. They take PayPal and they have good seeds. Here's their web site: http://www.silverhillseeds.co.za/default.asp

yup , thanks.. would love to have seeds from another country to see if they grow in Kansas..

Canyon Lake, TX(Zone 8b)

joeswife,

There is a USA button on their site that presents everything in US$s

Netcong, NJ(Zone 5b)

Colin - Convolvulus capensis is similar to Convolvulus arvensis and definitely not a fragrant species...

Silverhill does not provide government issued phytosanitary certificates and any seeds entering the US without a phyto may be confiscated...unless you have a seed import permit...

The USDA does issue small lots of seed import permits for free, but it seems that they have made it 'difficult' for people to get seeds from other countries as per all of the steps required to fulfill all of the conditions of the permit...the information on the USDA website is not accurate as per the requirements that are clearly stated in the paperwork that arrives with the permit...and unless you happen to be lucky enough to live close to one of the port of arrival inspection sites, there is a good chance that you will be in for some 'stonewalling' in order to attempt to get your seeds...

The USDA did not want to allow any seeds to come into the USA without a government issued phytosanitary certificate and they buckled under pressure to create the allowance of small lots of seed permit program, but they apparently made sure that there are some 'hidden catches' that they could exploit to make actually getting your seeds problematic...

Ordering seeds from other countries has risks that you need to be aware of for those people in the USA...

This is Jerry's thread on fragrant species and the subject of phyto's and import permits should ideally have a thread devoted to that topic if someone wants to explore it further and in any substantial depth...
