The images were taken in Cairo a couple of days ago.
Thanks
CLOSED: Unknown bee
Hi JB,
this looks like a male Carpenter Bee.
If it was in my garden I would say it's Xylocopa caffra - but I don't know if they occur at the other end of Africa, too.
They are very widespread here.
Maddy
Hi, maddy.
I've looked a loads of images of Xylocopa caffra and I would agree with you but so far I haven't managed to find out if it occurs in Egypt. I'll keep trying.
Jacqueline
I don’t know about Xylocopa caffra, but the yellow carpenter bee Xylocopa aestuans reportedly is common in Egypt - see http://egyfouna.aun.edu.eg/animal_administration.asp?Page=415 (Where it is misspelled as “aeustuans”), as well as Xylocopa pubescens (formerly considered a subspecies of X. aestuans) - see http://www.discoverlife.org/mp/20m?kind=Xylocopa+pubescens
Afterthought: The reference to Xylocopa aestuans (“aeustuans”) actually may refer to X. pubescens, as the known range of X. aestuans (sensu strictu) does not include Egypt - see http://www.discoverlife.org/mp/20m?kind=Xylocopa+aestuans
