So this morning I got an egg that was different than usual. My girls haven't been laying much lately, probably due to day length, and I have a bunch on the verge of laying. These are today's eggs. The middle one is the different one. It is a slightly different shape and also paler color, and smaller. Do you think it is a pullet egg? All the hens I have that lay at the moment I received as adults so I don't know pullet eggs. I just know that this egg is noticeably different. The color in this pic is not 100% accurate - it really is quite a bit paler than the others. Plus it is more pointy at the one end whereas the others are rounder.
It could also be an older hen that just isn't laying often I guess.
Is this a pullet egg?
I think so, I had 2 last week that shape and color also. I think pullet.
My girls lay all different color (from VERY light tan to regular dark brown) and different size eggs - the other day we had one that looked like two eggs fused together. Our girls are all the same age (or thereabouts)......I think we get used to the typical "storebought" type of egg, which doesn't allow for natural variation. Those "atypical" eggs would not be packaged.
?????
True enough, there can be variation, it's just that pretty much every egg I've had for about the last 2 months has looked like the other 4 eggs, and since I have a bunch of hens "on the verge" of pullet-hood, I was wondering if this might be a first egg. The other eggs are coming from red star (or other red sex link) hens and are quite predictably the same every time....
Could be a new one......I still can't be sure "who" is laying all of our eggs. It has been rather odd, however, the differences we've had in size. About 2 weeks ago, we had an ENORMOUS egg that didn't even fit in the egg box.......then we'll get a small one, then medium. It's really weird. Throw in the really light ones and it's anyone's guess as to who and why. ?????
I don't understand why they just can't sign their eggs with their signature so we can tell. It's really not very considerate of them! LOL!
yea really, I have quite a few that are "up and coming" so who knows who's is who's. I know why tho, they love me and me loves them. Thanksgiving will be a bunch of deviled eggs for sure :) And some baked goods.
What determines them no longer being a pullet? I thought it was just laying...
Lacey was laying for a month before the others and, as you may remember, she was laying such different eggs that we were beginning to think Talula had started, too.
The other day Talula laid an egg that was almost TWICE the size of her usual eggs and she's back to the regular size again. I can't wait to eat this one tomorrow... I'm thinking its got to be a double-yolk.
pullet eggs r small eggs than normal there is another name for it but can't think of it at the moment. a female chicken is a pullet from hatch till age one year after that they r hens. becomeing a layer doesn't make them a hen cuz they r still not mature and developed enough internally. they r fully developed after 1 year old however if they r layers age 4-6 mths old they still can breed and lay it's just not as good for them and could cause probs in futer.
i got a pullet egg the other day from my last buff silkie pullet and it's a hoot to see i'll see if my cell can take a good pic of it.
I bet that is cute. Makes me wanna call up the lady that we gave our silkie/cochin babies to and go for a visit!
the smallest egg i've ever got from my girls was a white silkie egg looked just like a button quail egg only tinted and no spots. or mabe about size of cockatiel egg also. it barely when cracked open had any white in it and no yolk my 4 year old still made me make her a baby sissy size scrambie eggie, lmao. it is a hoot to see their pullet eggs they've all been smaller than the serama eggs, rotfl if i'd of not seen it myself i'd of never thought it was possible.
Wow, Talula certainly goes for "variety is the spice of life" in her eggs!
Maby your hen was just in a hurry Claire. LOL
One more dumb question: so if you are calling this a pullet egg and they are a pullet until about a year. Does that mean their eggs are smaller than normal for the first *year* and then they get bigger?!?
nope usually only first egg up to no more than first 7 eggs laid r smaller. each breed and each bird is different so it varies. usually it is only first 1-3 though, it depends on how their cycle adjusts and how quickly it straightens and how their bodys adjust to accepting being able to lay. no such thing as a dumb question, ask away. actually there is a tech term name for it not called that but i can't think of it since it has been awhile since i heard it called it. common name for it is pullet egg so that's what makes it confuseing.
Great info there! I had no idea my chickens were not hens yet. Have not had a birthday!!! They are all pullets! How cute. They are all my babies!
Cute egg pics! The difference in colors is neat.
I do hope you do have another layer, you did say it was getting close to time right Cmoxon? That would be reason to celebrate! Whoot Whoot!
I think my oldest pullets were hatched in the 3rd week of July. I got them as fluffballs. That would make them maybe 18 to 19 weeks....
Okay....get this.....I went out this morning to collect my one egg and chirp was still working on it so I waited and got it a half hour later. Okay? I just went out to tuck the girls in and there was another egg! My pullets were also born in July. I believe around mid July. There is no way Chirp layed 2 eggs today right? It had to be Smudge! Her crown is bigger too. I got that crew as day olds. I did not hatch them. So it could very well be a pullet. WOW! what a week! Here is a pic of smudge. Sorry about the red eye! It was getting dark out. LOL
I am printing a retraction LOL Smudge was born in end of JUNE! Not July! Sorry about that. She is a bit older. :(
Excellent! I would say Smudge would certainly be of laying age now...it is very likely hers! Hooray!
I agree! I just stopped keeping track of the dates! July would still be old enough too! So it could be your other pullet. According to the calendar they are just old enough! Horray! Let me know if you get anymore of the smaller ones! I agree they should sign them as said above! LOL It would make life easier!
My girls DO sign them... isn't that amazing?!?! Lacey puts a light brown with freckles on hers. Talula puts a cream color on hers and Anya makes hers GREEN! ;-)
WOW! Custom eggs! Mine, I'm just happy they are laying. I will work on the signiture later. ;)
I still want green and blue eggs!!! I am green (with envy) LOL
That's great that you got them to sign eggs, so much easier that way. I need to work on that :)
Well, CMoxon, I thought of you today as I gathered 2 eggs.......one enormous one and one medium sized one. No clue. I don't think my girls are aware that they are supposed to lay small ones, then go right to regular sized. They must have missed that memo, because I still get all sorts of different sizes, from girls that were all hatched early June.
??????
The big one I got today (sorry, my son already ate it, or I would post a picture!) was huge! A double-yoker - we get quite a few of those! - it barely fit in the carton - wouldn't close right -until, of course, my son ate it :)
T.
ha! made good use of that one -- growing boy and all. :)
That is great! My pullets are still pushin out the little ones. Someone told me to feed them higher levels of protien. I did change their food to a 16% protien layer. Thats when they began to lay. ;)
Woo hoo! Caught her in the act! It's my little dominique hen! I got her this summer in a trade, along with a buff polish and 2 blue laced red wyandottes. I'm so pleased! I saw her in the same nest box as the one I found that other smaller egg. I kept an eye on her because I saw her put some straw on her back just like Rosie does. Took about 1.5 hours for her to finally move on, but there it was, another small pale egg, somewhat larger than the last one and a slightly less pointy end. I figure it must be her. All the other eggs still look the same as they always have! Hooray for Dominique!
That is the best news ever!!!! I am so happy! I love Dominique chickens! My daughter want s them because that is her name.
How are you feeling? Maybe you should take harmony's advice and go get an xray anyway. Never hurts. :) I am so happy for you though!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!BIG GRIN AND YAH WHOOOOOOOO!
I'm so happy too - it's such fun when a chicken starts to lay! I feel like having a little party for her and giving her a cake or something. It's like she just graduated or something! LOL! Dominique is a lovely name for your daughter.
I am feeling fine really. I mean, my head is still tender but the headache has subsided a bit and I planted all those bulbs this morning then later we dug potatoes for about an hour and then tilled out 3 rows and put in the garlic for next year, and then I did surgery on a goat abscess and finished up with iodine rinses, and then I came in and put a hatched buff orpington into the brooder and cleaned out the brooder and the rabbit hutch that houses the 3-6 week old chicks in the basement, and just now sitting down again. If I had a serious head problem, I think it would have prevented me from doing all that.
I am truely glad you are feeling better. I feel bad though! I should have told you to go to the hospital last night. I am sorry! I am not a doctor and I too would have felt bad if something happened to you!
So you dont have snow yet? Is the ground frozen at all?
You are a busy girl! Your DH and you do a lot of stuff! You have bunnies too? I love them but my DD is alergic. She gets shots every week to try to make it better for her. We had one and it immediately made her sick. Cats too! I feel bad for her. She loves animals so much and horses tend to give her blisters until she is out of range. Its wierd though, she has been around goats and sheep but had no reaction! I dont know! We just keep meds around incase. Usually washing hands and skin takes care of it.
I planted garlic last spring , it didnt do well. I guess fall is a better time for that huh?
Fall is definitely the time to plant garlic. We have 6 different varieties this year. Hoping to sell some at the farmer's market next year. We got some unusual varieties from the Seed Savers Exchange in Decorah, Iowa. I love that place!
Don't feel bad - even if every single one of you had told me to go to the ER, I probably would not have done so unless I felt it was necessary. I am a tough old bird and I just don't like going to the hospital for things that I think are going to be OK. I have been to the ER twice. Once when I folded my foot in half, and once when I was play wrestling an ex-boyfriend and got his elbow in my nose. It bled so bad I thought it was broken.
We had a little snow yesterday but it melted today. We do an awful lot of stuff here. We don't have bunnies now but I use my old bunny hutch for the 3 to 6 week old chicks because it keeps them separate from the really tiny chicks. Then at 6 weeks they go into the brooder in the barn. At 10 weeks, they come out to the main coop with the heat lamp.
Here I am today with a couple of chickens. Right as rain!
Glad you're feeling better! I was shocked at all the things you listed in the other thread that you had accomplished today... and I was feeling good about myself for having pulled the forms off our foundation and finishing up my chicken pen. ha!
I like to braid garlic. It looks so cool hanging in the kitchen. Knowing you grew it is cooler! I will try again soon!
Ya, she makes me look bad Lazy_Ladies! I didnt even hit my head! LOL
Quite a system you have there CMoxon! Different condos for all the ages! You should have seen what I did when I was growing up my flock! You would have laughed. I had them in a playpen in the living room! I loved to watch them play. They had all kinds of toys! hehehe!
How fun is that!! I love it! I would love to have my chicks in the living room. But it might not smell too good. The dog (greyhound) might get too interested also.
Braiding garlic would be cool. I never tried that yet!
Even if you had gone to the ER thy probable would not have found any thing even if it was there. Many things including cracks in bones do not show up until later. They never found the injury that I did to my face, when I tried to dig that hole in the road and I actually move one of my face plates.
Nor did they find the injury to my neck when that tv fall on my head or the injury to my back when I fell off the horse. It took 20 years to find that one.
Oh yes, they did get smelly after awhile! I had to clean their cage constantly. I never had more than 7 at a time though. My first batch was only 3! As long as they stayed clean my husband did not care. Once they were feathered out they had to go out though. It was sad everytime!!! I just love them so much. I sit and watch TV with them. The kids and I take turns holding them so they are use to people. They jump on my back even still when I bend over in the run. They crack me up. They grab onto my pants and pull to tease me.
It really is not hard to braid it. You just add new strands with bulbs as you go. I will see if I can find instructions on a link for you!
Hospitals are good for that too! My poor sister broke her wrist and it took 2 visits to find it. ;)
