I was trying to take a picture of this Arbutus unedo 'Rubra' and this dragonfly stole the show. Any idea? The picture was taken at the entrance to University of British Columbia Botanical Garden, Vancouver, British Columbia.
CLOSED: Dragonfly
This dragonfly is in the genus Aeshna (darners); there are at least eight species in this genus that can occur in your area that can have a roughly similar colour pattern, so I hesitate to pin a specific name on it. That aside, one possibility is the sedge darner (Aeshna juncea) - see http://www.turtlepuddle.org/pix/Dragonflies/SedgeDarner_dorsal.JPG
Thanks. I looked around that site and found this image of a Paddletail: http://www.turtlepuddle.org/pix/Dragonflies/paddletail_lateral12X9.JPG which kinda looks like it. What do ya think?
Yes, that one definitely is a possibility as well. Unfortunately, the angle of view in your photo makes it difficult to determine the precise outline of the lateral thoracic markings.
Sorry - I meant your original photo, not the first one of the paddletail.
