I'm a rookie - I have two MG growing from seeds in pots. Can I transplants them into the ground at the base of a tree? If so, how big should the vines be before I transplant?
can I transplant MGs from pot to ground?
Hey.. WELCOME!!!

2ndChance you can transplant your plants if they are seedlings or mature plants as long as you don't damage the roots during the transplant process. The following picture shows my MG seedlings after about 2 or 3 days.

The next picture shows the same seedlings after being transplanted. Notice how deep the seedlings stems were placed in the soil.

In the next picture if your plant is about this size or larger, then it shouldn't be a problem transplanting it into the ground at the base of your tree. You may need to add some plant soil around the base of the tree because the soil may be to hard for the plant to grow.

You can transplant seedlings or muture plants into the ground any time just be careful not to damage the roots. Also keep in mind that the temperature should be around 70F or higher. Not sure about the weather in Tempe AZ during this time of year but know that MG can't grow outside during the winter season. Hope this helps

2ndChance - I suggest that we 'walk' before 'running'...
The first and most important question before any accurate answers can be provided is:
What species do you have (?)...
Ipomoea nil,I.purpurea and I.tricolor are annuals and if you put them in the ground now, they will complete their life cycle and die...
There are various perennial species and some of the perennials may be cold hardy in your climate zone...
Regards,...
Ron
