The easiest thing in the world, right? Grrr...
I had some cuttings off of this kinda twiggy mum that I put in sterile soil and placed in one of those sweater boxes for high humidity. Lost a few, so I took them out of the humidity box and put them on a low heat mat - about 70-72 degrees. Lost a few more.
So, now I'm wondering if I should have waited a bit longer in the box? Or put the box on the mat? Or maybe they take a long time? Or ... maybe they aren't so easy????
Holp!
Rooting Mums
Pag
Mums are short day plants. They go dormant after they have bloomed. Take cuttings from new growth in the spring.
Gary
Ah... *that's* it. Thanks, Gary!
Pagancat - honestly, with cuttings in the spring you can make sooooooo many mums! Even I can do it!
Cheers,
SE-andor
Well, if *you* can - I'm kidding! Seriously, though - if I can get these babies through the winter, I'll be in mum heaven...
Sheryl:
they are correct mum cuttings need to be green growth. I applied to a large grower in fort myers, they grew mums and azaleas by the acre and they had a huge operation. It would have been sweet to get the job. I think they wanted a more plyable worker as well as a bit more experience.
Dave
Tell them that if they hire you then you will be experienced and just what they are looking for.
LOL I am sorry I did not say that. unfortunately it was almost 20 years ago. Oh well life goes on
Dave
Call 'em up now - "Hey.... do you still have my app? I have more experience...."
LMao... I wish it worked that way. Unfortunately I don't think I would meet their physical requirements now. I sometimes wonder if the physical I had to go through showed something I was not informed of. If I knew then maybe I would have been a bit more careful in what I did. Oh well woulda coulda shoulda.... life goes on. keep smilin it makes them think you are upto something.
Dave
I just had a spider mum fresh , it was just a single flower and I took the flower off and got 2 cuts from it and I am trying to get it to take. Wish me luck Please. It was so pretty and it was a green one at that. If it takes it will probably go back to the orignal color though.
Oh, good luck - those are my favorite mums.
I have the cuttings I took back when I began this thread still going. They don't have any roots, but are still green and flexible (bizarre!) so perhaps they'll stick around until spring. Who knows?
Man it must take forever for them to root if you have had them that long? I think the spider mums are my favorite ones. The rest of them I really don't fancy to much but these are something else.
Naw - I think I was off in my timing, as Gary said, I should have started them in spring.
Well tell me how you get new growth in the spring unless you have spider mums to start with. Around here you can't find spider mums to start with. I think they are a florist flower anyway. I have never seen anyone have any.
Mmm - you might have better luck if you call them 'Football Mums'. I bought some last spring from http://www.bluestoneperennials.com/b/bp/scan/tf=name/ml=12/ma=1/rf=*/co=yes/sp=results_pics/st=db/fi=products/sf=ty/se=tm/op=rm/sf=disc/se=0/op=%3E.html?ext_title=Mums - they did really well, too..
No the one I have looks nothing like the football mum, It looks like the quill mum, only green instead of white.
Gotcha.
I've ordered several times from Bluestone - they're a good company. Small plants.....but very nice.
Yeah I got a catalog from them today and they have them and if I don't get this one going in time I may order me a couple of them, but they don't have the green one and that's the one I really want.
