Lets play Name That Pod!

Lewisburg, KY(Zone 6b)

This past August I took a trip to Nashville and went to the Cheekwood gardens. I picked lots of seeds and pods off of plants there but cannot remember what this one come from!

Anyone have any idea what this could be from?

The pod is about 1 1/2 inches long and splits into 3 sections. Each section opens down the middle revealing 2 rows of tightly packed dark brown half moon shaped seeds.

the shape of the pod reminds me a bit of an iris... can't remember what iris seeds look like offhand.

Büllingen, Belgium(Zone 6b)

Well the Iris here (also zone 6b) is getting seed much earlier and is ripe (darkbrown) in July and my Iris has much longer seedpods. It might be a penstemon species or delphinium. As a European I do not know what Cheekwood gardens is. Is it a cultivated garden or a wild garden?

Here you go, read away.
http://www.cheekwood.org/Gardens.aspx

I just loved visiting the place.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

I thought both penstemon and delphinium had much smaller (and maybe rounder) pods...

Irises, Daylilies, and oriental lilies that I failed to deadhead still have pods here...

Lewisburg, KY(Zone 6b)

I plan on planting some this spring anyhow, but i'm not sure when or where to plant it! I wish I would have had a pencil and paper while I was there to write down what I collected. It would have made things much easier on me now. Live and learn lol.

Critterologist, You are right to say that penstemon and delphinium have smaller seedpods. Because I'm european I read an inch for a cm. But the seedpods are still green. Are your iris seedpods too?

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

The pod in the photo is a bit greenish, but it contains what look like mature seeds... I guess I'd better go out and take another look at my irises, LOL... the ones I remember as setting lots of pods are Siberian Irises.

I don't know... do you think the seeds in Carolyn's photo look like DL seeds? I thought DL seeds seemed just a bit rounder...

Nilwood, IL(Zone 5b)

I don't really know. I have had a Stella for yrs but paid no attention to the pods and seeds and have just been into daylilies for 2yrs now so guess I will learn. I have 30 some already. Can't wait to see some bloom next yr. BEV

Whether it's a lily or an iris, I think germination etc. should be similar... and you'll know it by the leaves! :-)

Well I was looking at your pod and to me it looks like the one I picked off of my Rose of Sharon and the seed in the pod is like what you described that was in my pods, laying the same and all. I am not sure but just looking,it looks the same.

What about a Yucca?

Washington, IN(Zone 6a)

No yucaas have an elongated type pod. I have those and know what they look like as I kept them pulled off to keep them from spreading. But it sure looks looks the pods I took off the rose of sharon If I had a picture of it I would post it so she could compare but don't have one now to take pic of.

Baytown, TX(Zone 9b)

check this out http://theseedsite.co.uk/db12a.html . I think it is a lily seed pod.

Carolyn,
I also think it is from the Liliaceae family. It will be interesting to see just which one you may have the seed of. Did you happen to take photos of the pretty flowers during your tour through the gardens? You might look at them and see if you perchance see anything that has your pods. Might also jog a memory for you. Good luck....hope you snagged a beauty.

That's what I keep saying. It looks like a rose of sharon pod and they are of the hibiscus family

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

It's not Rose of Sharon... those are weird looking seeds with a fan of fuzzies around their edge.

Washington, IN(Zone 6a)
