Leyland Cypress, ... Or How Not To Do It

Northumberland, United Kingdom(Zone 9a)

Two new Leyland Cypress cultivars . . . or an example of why it isn't a good idea to plant them in small gardens . . .

Left: Cupressus × leylandii 'Anne Boleyn'
Right: Cupressus × leylandii 'Louis XVI'

It looks like the birch got a "crown reduction", too.

LOL!

Whew!

Hendersonville, NC(Zone 7a)

That's hilarious, in a painful sort of way...

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

I planted an entire row of them, to screen out the neighbors yard. Nice neighbors but I wanted a little more privacy in the back and they have a huge garage that I would rather not see. Mine should have space to grow.

I hope that's S P A C E !

Yes, It's along the edge of what use to be my horse pasture. You can just see the little trees growing in front of the weeds. If you notice the power line running across the picture don't worry it isn't anywhere near the trees.

The risk is that they grow so fast, they'll get 30 metres tall, and then you'll get a harsh winter, and have a row of huge dead trees to deal with . . .

This one is 36 metres tall:

And has a trunk over a metre thick . .

Oh My Goodness! There's just no justification for that tree in an urban setting.

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

WOW that is huge. I our area they are quite often trimmed into tall hedges but keeping a tree with that much growth potential to about 12ft could be difficult.

Emeral green arborvitie only gets 12 feet, and makes a nicer hedge.

Yes they are very pretty and make a beautiful hedge. But in my area they are prone to snow damage. There is a home near us that had a beautiful curved hedge of arborvitae but they had so much trouble that they have started to remove them. We have quite a bit of space down that side of the pasture hopefully the Leland will work for us.
