Easy Brug Cutttings for Postage

Nassau County, NY(Zone 7a)

Wowhoooooooooo I got mine too, thank you so much sweetie for doing this. I checked your website and it is lovely!

Canyon Lake, TX(Zone 8b)

Just got mine today. Very nice. The paper towel is still moist. Being in the dark for a week has caused all but one short fat one to sprout tiny leaves at multiple points along the cutting. the short fat one has roots about 3/4" long in two places at the top (open air where it was pressed against the moist paper towel of one of the longer cuttings) and it has roots just starting beneath the moist paper towel. Under the paper towel the nubbies are swollen and fuzzy. This one is going in flat in the growing medium.

Rather than putting these in water, I think I will go directly into a mix of 1/3 Perlite, 1/3 Vermiculite and 1/3 Cactus Potting Mix and wick them over water keeping them at between 55-75* and out of direct sunlight.

These are beautiful cuttings.

Thank you very much.

next - notice the wick is out so it can be held while filling the pot. It will be pulled down later so the tip is about a 1/4 - 1/2" below the surface. The medium (1/3 Perlite, 1/3 Vermiculite, and 1/3 Cactus mix and an equal amount of water) will remain moist, but not wet once the wicking begins.

All Done - The medium is not ever packed, but by holding the cutting and the pot, gently bump the straight down on the counter settling the medium around the existing roots and the stem. Now it is time to pull the wick down under the surface.

Ran out of black pots, so I used my old standbys with holes burned in the bottoms.

Thaks for sharing your presentation Texas garden, I love the way you explained everything. I never thought of covering my cuttings with plastic, great point!

Canyon Lake, TX(Zone 8b)

I have never rooted Brugs before, but, I have rooted lots of AVs and a few Roses with this method.

There were a few roots on the cuttings and until there are leaves and lots of roots to pull good water, I don't want the green stems to dry at a faster rate than what the current roots can provide water. Does that make sense? I will keep an eye out for condensation forming on the inside of the plastic (cleaner's bag) and vent appropriately so as not to create wet environment that will encourage mold, fungi, or rot.

It has been very dry here all year and the humidity very low, so, there is high risk of the tops (stems) dying before there are ample roots to sustain life.

This is all just my theory. If I succeed, it's all good to go and if the cuttings die, I will apologize to violabird for having killed these wonderful cuttings.

I have tried all methods with cuttings, the moss, gave up, too smelly for me, the bubler works, no smell and when they grow a few roots, they go to dirt. BUT, I did not have a bubler before so I just left them in water wirth a llittle peroxide and boom, roots.

I have lost a few cuttings, some are harder than others, but overall, I am doing OK.
I hope Viola's make it for me! LOVE you GIRL!

If you have any cuttings left, I'd like one (any color - I have lots of cuttings of my yellow brugmansia to share).

Canyon Lake, TX(Zone 8b)

If you will recall last Wednesday I received my cuttings and put them directly into pots.

I have removed the plastic and the three above ground cuttings all have tiny shoots coming out.

This one has the most shoots with five. Is this about right for seven days?

Canyon Lake, TX(Zone 8b)

It has been two weeks since I received my cuttings from Viola (thanks) so I wanted to post up a picture just let you all know that I haven't killed them yet. (smile) The log that was completely covered with the grow medium in the square freezer container is sending up a sprout. Yeh!

These plants must have some powerful "grow-genes". Ever time I look at them I think about Jack and the Beanstalk . LOL It concernes me to think I have to manage these plants until Spring. They require as much attention as did raising my two boys, 36yo and 46yo.LOL

Just wanted to give y'all an update. It has been 21 days and the Brugs are still alive. Tomorrow they get to go outdoors. They love it outside.

They are still alive and kicking. Five weeks ago today these Bruggers were just a few little sticks with great hopes.

Thanks, Viola!

That is just one of the things that amazes me about these plants. They are so easy to start from a cutting..

Mine are doing quite well.. but anxious for Spring..

Nice to see your success isn't it? I'd always recommend starting with the easy ones first to give you some confidence and know what to expect.

Jerry I think you had gotten the 2 Suave's right? They make wonderfully fragrant big bushes and that's how I let mine grow. Monster is usually about 7" x 7' and really makes a statement at night. I make standards of the others.

Canyon Lake, TX(Zone 8b)

Viola,

Quoting:
I make standards of the others.

I'm not sure what this means as I am still so new to the Brug world.

I will be potting these fellas up to gallon plastics soon.

I have considered preparing a trench 2' or 3' wide and as deep and filling it with a bulk rose mix I buy from an organic nursery that sells bulk soil. Otherwise the only soil I have is caliche. I doubt they would grow in the caliche.

Union City, CA(Zone 9b)

A standard looks like a tree rather than a bush - like a rose bush and a tree rose - the tree rose would be a standard .

Baytown, TX(Zone 9b)

Mine are doing good also. I am excited. I will have brug blooms this year I hope.

Wow Jerry, you are a great brug daddy! How nice to track a cutting to bloom. How do you like her scent?
Thanks so much for sharing, you made my day. I hope everyone will.
Vi

Canyon Lake, TX(Zone 8b)

Yeah, it's been fun. Can't wait for the pink one to bloom.

It's overcast this morning so the blooms are still open. I was so excited yesterday evening that when I saw that it was opening and not knowing it would still be open this morning I made sure I got a pic last night.

The scent is spicy with a touch of sweet citrus...very nice.

Bless its heart the leaves are a little raggedy due to the windy Spring we've had along with a couple occasions of pea sized hail.

The Brug is growing in straight coconut coir and gets to dine every time I feed the tomatoes on weak solutions of Miracle Grow - Tomato alternated with Medina Hasta Gro. This is done on a weekly basis or more often. I think it like this combo.

Haven't see any pics of your Brugs. Have I missed them?

Jerry
