I got up a little late this morning and my Diamonds were both sitting on the feeder side by side. I turned on their light and they didn't move and after a little bit finally flew up to the top perch.
I thought this was odd as for the last week there was allways one on the nest at all times. I felt of their egg and it was stone cold but i thought maybe they have just took a break.
Waited 2 long hours and i knew they had abandoned the egg (so sad) i removed it and they took no mind just sat on the perch. I hadn't touched the egg since i candled it and hadn't touched it at all before that.
Did i make a mistake by candleing them? Should i have left the infertile one in the nest?
If they lay again should i just leave them alone and only go to the cage to feed them?
Silkie you have Tiels what do you do when they lay eggs?
I'm just upset i was nervous from the start and now i wonder if it was something i did :o(
Disapointed :o(
harmony, i can't answer your questions, but am sorry for your lose
Thanks Jordan i'm so new to these and i just fear i did something wrong :o(
Wonder if the nasty cold wet weather coming in may have had anything to do with it? It's certainly not a great season for babies...so sorry, Har...
Thanks Grow i don't know why they abandoned the egg they are still just sitting on their perch like there never was a egg at all.
I've had a hen or 2 get off the nest and i never let them set again.
Maybe there was just something they didn't like i guess i should of not candle the eggs it could have made them nervous.
If they lay again i'm not touching nothing!
sorry for your loss harmony. I know how excited you were (we all were) for the tiny little egg.
Well Lady here's hopeing they lay again and i will keep my grubby fingers away.
It won't take long for them to lay again. I could never figure out why my doves sometimes abandoned eggs, but do know it happened more often if they were disturbed or I fussed with the nest. WOrse yet, was the few occasions when they abandoned a chick.
I always loved it when they would ley the next two eggs in with the half grown chicks so they would keep them warm for them.
Thanks and i've already vowed not to so much as breath hard in their direction if they lay again.
I cleaned out their nest and replaced it and they are roosting there right now so got my grubby fingers crossed.
Well i have pigeons and ring neck doves and i'm always checking their nest and putting in clean straw for the eggs or babys when it gets poopy.
They never mind me doing that so i was just doing these Diamonds like them my mistake and a lesson learned(Sigh)
i got to go give everyone tacos i just made and i didn't read all this yet but saw u asked a question. i'll come back after i eat to read rest of post and reply more. with tiels i do not touch nest untill baby is 1 week old when i pull them to hand rear. so sorry hun will brb.
mar
Now you tell me i wish i had known that before i candled them i don't know diddle about these birds and now i see it was indeed my mistake :o(
Live, Learn and take yourself out behind the shed then write 100 times....... I will not touch the eggs or take pics....I will not touch the eggs or take pics........I will not touch the eggs or take pics.......I will not touch the eggs or take pics.......I will not touch the eggs or take pics........Only 95 to go..........
hmm. not sure usually a bird will abandon an egg if it gets to cold, there is something wrong with the egg or they think there is, if they think it is unfertile or it starts to smell. sometimes they do it if we mess to much with them or out of jealousy cause they want the attention on them not the egg(kinda a protection thing), there is actualy many reasons but i personally would trust mother nature and think something was wrong with the egg or baby usually that is why.
tiels r a little different though they have nest boxes not actual nests and they need more privacy so i don't mess with them cause they bite and hard, lol. i have had mom's that totally trusted me like my lady bird. she was a pearl pied lutino tiel. she from first hatch always loved to show her babies off to me, she was a spoiled momma's girl who did everything out of her cage with me. she would allow me to check the babies with her on the nest and just smile away but if her mate was close she would chase him out the box shoveing him with her chest and stand guard at the door. she would guard me from him or he'd attack me. i was the only one in the house that could open her nest box at any time and see or touch those babies but anyone else she attacked and i was the only one she guarded him from. mike was allowed to peak in but only if i pened the nest box up and she saw me first or she would hiss and try to bite. so u never know sometimes it depends on each pair as well or how attached they r to their people. breeders i have now they'd rip my hand off just thinking about it, lol. because i'm not their origional breeder or owner so they r not used to me.
with dove's i do not know if human scent matters or not with tiels it depends on the pairs individually, who they trust more than scent. i'm wondering if it is do to u being new owner to them mabe old owner never touched the nest to clean it or perhaps ur hands smelled of some of the other birds ? that is possible too.
i have been wondering this same issue with my pigeons as well. they r takeing turn in nest and also mateing alot. mike says to leave them alone and let them nest but i want to hold them everyday to have them hand tamed. he said to keep the human scent from them and i said well that's fine but whos gonna clean the poop? i heard the poop on the eggs can make them infertile so i'm confused too. i put alfa alfa hay in tonight wth them so they can use it for nesting and i gave them seeds and sand/grit so i hope that helps too and is ok. oh and i heard if they r not fertile for pigeon eggs in a few days they r kinda weird looking and off color. that if they r fertile they stay nice cream color and perfect shappen? i was wondering if that was a better way to tell and we should both leave nests alone??
oh harm, i'm so very sorry i know how much ur heart was set for that little one to hatch, i'm worried now too. how do i clean poo without bothing the nest then? mabe i can put it farther from the perch so they don't poo so much in it and just don't touch it after i clean it since no egg yet. i'm scared i'll mess up now too. mabe if we absolutely have to clean a rubber glove might help? i just don't know and i don't want to mess up either.
Silkie I don't handle my pigeons that much and you could be disturbing their nesting and getting comfortable in a new home. Mine will mate repeatedly then she will sit on the nest and and lay her egg then 2 days another. If they are mateing i would leave them alone so they can get thier nest ready mine like to put poop, seeds, feathers anything interesting in their nest.
You could also break and egg in the female or frighten her and she expel the egg on the floor or you.
This time the DH is right you should tell him they don't get this privledge very often.
I will only raise them up a little with my hand to see the eggs i don't ever handle or candle unless it's and important setting so if they are infertile i can take them and get them to lay more.
I will lift her a little when i finally see a shell on the cage bottom then i know they have hatched just to check and make sure their okay.
Poop on the eggs cause's them to be infertile never heard that mine will poop in the nest sometimes and it has never effected the eggs. Not to be blunt but as poopy and messy as they can be i can't keep the poop out of the nest and the babys will fill it full in the blink of and eye. I have to change the bedding in mine at least 4 or 5 times before they leave it.
Mine have never abandoned their nest and they have no problem with me cleaning the nest but i only do it when it's really got to have it done.
Silkie,
When you say, Tiel, are you refering to cockatiels?
Awwwww... that's a whole lotta fuzzies!
k, that answers my questions then, thank you. yeah we thought it sounded stupid, cause all birds poop in the nest especially pigeons and chickens and we never had that prob with chicken eggs. yes a tiel is a cockatiel. k then during breeding season i will not hold or mess with them only do feeders and waterers. i know with tiels it doesn't make a difference other than they just r more prone to bite usually but if u hold them and u don't go near nest it's fine.
Sorry to hear about your egg Harmony. I hope she will decide to try again soon. I was so excited for you. Keep us updated!
I have raised over 100 pigeons & doves every year (total) for the past 30 years & continually handle eggs & babies & never had a problem with nest abandonment.Over the years I've had an occasional pair that would continually desert their eggs after a few days for ??? reasons, I will give their eggs to foster parents, split up that pair & see what happens with different mates.

John These are Diamond Doves very tiny cage birds.
I too raise pigeons and ring neck doves and have no problem with them letting me handle the eggs and babys.
But these are nervous cage birds and i believe they abandoned the nest due to my interference with the nest and brooding their eggs.
I intend as they are mateing again to just keep my distance and see if they will not abandon the nest.
i have some unusual tiels. one of my breedind pairs will protect the eggs, but only with small "warning bites" but i have another male that doesn't have a mate, and he protects the pair's eggs fiercely. its like he thinks he is the father!!!! lol!!!!!!:)
