Need large quantity of Bark Mulch

Pasadena, CA(Zone 9b)

Does anyone have a cheap supplier of bark mulch medium nuggets somewhat near where I live? I would drive as far as Covina or Van Nuys if need be. I need to finish my back yard, and the bagged stuff is driving me to the poor house. Who knew how much it would take. I calculated that I need 3 cu. meters still.

Anyone?

Please?

You need a building materials store that carrys mulch. This one doesn't list it specifically but I'll bet if you call them they will know someone who does.

It says "Los Angeles".

There's a place called 'Americansoil.org'

in Simi Valley - says 40 miles from Pasadena

You'll have to call and ask about prices etc. but it is a place to start.

I'd try landscaping supply places too--around here there seem to be a fair number of them, but they're not always in very visible locations so you may not have ever noticed them driving by. They should also carry bulk mulch. I've got 2 of them less than a mile from my house, and Pasadena is a larger city so I would guess you'd have even more near you. Sometimes nurseries will have things like that too but their prices may not be as good.

Try a tree service, they are often glad to give you shredded wood for free, which can be used for mulch. If you get it from a tree service (they trim or take out the trees) make sure it isn't diseased wood, so you don't spread the disease. Straw works good too. A bale of straw costs between $7-8 dollars. Hope this helps J.man.

If you get it from a tree service or landscaping co., make sure it is Palm free, unless you want a forrest of palm trees in your yard!

Look for other seed pods too, if that would be a problem for you. I have "volunteers", but usually treat them as weeds and pull them when small.

Hi Jeff, You indicated you wanted a medium size bark mulch so don't know if this will be of any help. . .our local waste disposal yard (dump) recycles all green waste and all wood products except for treated wood. They grind all wood into a nice medium coarse shred.
It is free at our local disposal yard for pick-up or they will deliver locally for a small charge. Don't know if you have this kind of availability anywhere near you, or if you do, do they segregate out the bad stuff. If the idea interests you it would be worth checking into. Good luck.

Thanks for the great ideas everyone! A forest of palms . . . hmm . . . that sounds really nice, but they would probably not be the ones I really want!

I'm going to check out the City of Pasadena to find out about the recycled chips. Sounds great if they are not using diseased wood - though I'll bet some of the bark we buy in bags has at least some diseased wood in it.

Also try rock 'stores.' They often sell mulch as well as gravel, flagstones, etc.

So Jungleman, did you ever get your mulch? Just wondering.
