Gruesome as it sounds, Donna, tying the evidence like a dog collar where she could not remove it DID cure our dog ---it was a long 3 weeks, though.
(I've got border collies which are not biting dogs -nippers and nudgers, yes, but not biters)
Visiter to Hotel Chicken Coop
sorry if I came off strong, I know everyone wants to keep their critters safe, just like I do, we all do things different,
and no I did not release the possum into someone elses yard or even close, it was in a wilderness area with runny water, no one's yard. I had a neighbor that lets their dogs run all over and they attacked my cat and my older chicken all of whom were in my yard, and their attitude was shot the dog, I blame the people as they should be more responsible, believe me it breaks my heart to have any of my animals attacked, so sorry if I went off, I am just tired of things being done the way the neighbors etc... do, and then to think it is okay to let their dogs do what ever, the dogs end up paying the price as the went out running, big surprise and got hit on the highway.
You know I have the best luck with dogs. I raise ole hound puppies. Beagle/fox hound mixes(not on purpose. Just found this poor sweet dog with a broken jaw, most likely from a kick she came with 9 pups inside and well I had to keep 3) I raised them right beside the chicken coup. The dittles would climb all over the pups. Now my dogs think chickens are their"pack" also. Even in the past before I took a dog. I chicken checked them first. The worst dog I had was a Doxie/chihuahua mix. He could not bear to not run by the chickens and watch them scatter.
Here's my protector and her pups. They are grown now.
Boy, he is a handsome guy! I have always loved beagles. They are so loyal and have such a great disposition. What's his name? My girls name is Suzie. Her puppies are Brutus(girl pup, but rules the outside boys) 2 boys, Paddle foot and Payne. Suzie was in terrible condition and weighted only 10 lb. She still had 9 pups. She is now a chubby 21lb and will never have pups again.
George
Not terribly original, but his name is Charlie Brown - Charlie for short. I just love the breed, too.
I had no idea what I was getting myself into when I got him, but luckily, he turned out to be the best dog I've ever had. He's certain that we are his pack and that his job in life is to snuggle with anyone that'll let him. ;-) He is fabulous with our two small children *and* with our chickens.
The girls think he's their rooster and he has something going for our Americauna. I think its mainly that she'll hold still long enough for him to get close and get a good sniff, but I'll frequently look out in the backyard and there they'll be -- standing right next to eachother. ha!
If my dog was an outside dog I would try the chicken around the neck.I have a neighbor who done that to her dog and it worked. But my dog is an inside dog, don`t think I would want him in the house with that kind of necklace.Donna
Donna,
What kind of dog is he? Our dog is pretty submissive to begin with, but when we first introduced the chickens, he thought he might want to chase. We just put him on his back (submissive role) and held him there anytime that he tried to chase the chickens. It only took a couple of times for him to get it.
He is boxer and rottweiler 110 lbs, very submissive,my dh took him out on leash and of course he never tried anything but if we were not around I would not trust him,he chases anything small skunks porcupines and yes he got sprayed and needled a lot he never learns,he is 7 years old now. This is a picture of my son in laws deer he got last Sat. check out the horn in the middles of his forehead. He is going to have it mounted, and yes we love deer meat so none will go to waste. It weighted over 300lbs.Hunting season has been going on for a week now,it will last untill the end of this month.
I think that one was part unicorn, my daughter would be crushed to know you are going to eat it. ha! ;-)
My daughter is the same way,it was her husband that shot the deer, she will not allow him to bring the meat in the house nor will she cook it for him,she gave him a really hard time about it.I don`t know where he will put the head,he has a year and a half to think about it,thats how long it will take to mount it.
We have beautiful big antlered bucks that come in my yard and i love to watch them eat and walk away^_^
as it should be, I am glad my husband is not a hunter
We have friend that hunt for meat, not just sport. It also helps with the overpopulation of deer. Nothing is more scary than hitting a deer weather it is at 65mph on the freeway or 35mph on the road, or 10mph down your own driveway! . They are dangerous when they are running, and they can mess up your car really bad and also hurt or kill a driver.
My poor van is proof of that.
my poor car is thatway too
