Thanksgiving dinner favorites

Other than the turkey, what must you have on your table for Thanksgiving dinner?

S of Lake Ontario, NY(Zone 6a)

a big plate

The Monadnock Region, NH(Zone 5a)

LOL!!!!!!!!

I meant FOOD!!

For us, it's Broccoli Bake. What's yours?

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Stuffing - my favorite part!

The Monadnock Region, NH(Zone 5a)

What do you put into your stuffing, Victor? Do you make a special recipe?

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

My wife does. She adds (turkey) sausage to it.

The Monadnock Region, NH(Zone 5a)

Sounds yummy!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

It is. Not much sausage is needed. It just gives it a great flavor in addition to all the other ingredients.

S of Lake Ontario, NY(Zone 6a)

I would say stuffing too, and I use turkey sausage too. Used to use pork sausage.

Lebanon, OR

Ours is a Cranberry salad and a fruit salad.

D

Those if I do not do my grandkids would kill me...LOL

Southern Dutchess Co, NY(Zone 5b)

Stuffing here, as well. Nothing elaborate, just your regular bread stuffing. All my guys insist on it. Dessert is almost always a decadent two-layer pumpkin pie (w/chocolate crust) and a chocolate cheesecake pie. Veggies are optional for them - mandatory for me! Oh, and I roast the turkey with bacon covering the breast. Tradition, you know.

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

It's hard to just pick one but it would probably be the stuffing. My hubby is a poop and he just likes the old standard celery/onion stuffing. I LOVE chestnut stuffing.
Of course you have to have pumpkin and apple pies. One slice of each for dessert. Whipped cream on the pumpkin, vanilla ice cream on the apple.....oh great now I'm hungry!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Anything on the end of the fork tines. Other than that the turkey oysters.

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

Monkey fist bread is our favorite (one of my friends call it brain bread.. because it can look like that)... it's so easy to make and it's sssooooooo good... once it's on the table I have to stop whatever I am doing to get a bite.... it's gone in seconds!

here is a version of it

3 packages of buttermilk biscuit tubes
1 cup sugar (divided)
2 teaspoons cinnamon
1 cup butter
1/2 cup brown sugar

Take 3 packages of buttermilk biscuit tubes (10 per roll) and cut each roll into 4 pieces. Drop roll pieces into 1 cup sugar and 2 teaspoons cinnamon. Drop sugar-coated pieces into a well buttered Bunt pan (don't squish roll pieces when placing them in the Bunt pan).

Put 1/2 cup of the left-over sugar/cinnamon mix and 1/2 cup packed brown sugar and 1 cup of butter (2 sticks) into a small saucepan.

Bring this mixture just to a boil; remove from heat immediately. Carefully drizzle over the roll pieces.

Bake at 350°F for 30 minutes.

Cool slightly in an upright position, then tip pan over onto a plate to remove monkey pull-apart bread.

S of Lake Ontario, NY(Zone 6a)

I do the same bread with white bread dough instead of the bisquits. And I haven't done the extra topping. Love to just pull it apart. I'll have to try this version.

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

I just get the 4 pack of original biscuits... and use the extra can with the leftovers ... you have to see everyone's face when I flip the pan and the brown sugary goo drips down... usually the oohh and aahhh's are heard

Sue, RI(Zone 6a)

Oyster stuffing! Mmmm! However I'm the only one that likes it sooo....I'd have to say the homemade gravy covering creamy mashed potatoes.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Sounds good, Allison. Of course, I forgot dessert. My mom does the baking and she is the best! Apple pie, chocolate pudding pie, lemon meringue...Yumm!

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

OH MY!! Now we're talkin!!! We can have up to 40 - 50 people, so everybody brings things. But, usually it ends up being the same things - and of course they are all MUSTS in my book. LOL

Mashed potatoes/ gravy
Sweet potatoes
creamed onions
broccoli casserole
cranberry salad
stuffing - plain and with sausage. Not in the bird, though
spinach salad
root vegetable casserole _ I'll have to get the recipe to share with you

Desserts vary, but definitely some pumpkin and apple are included.
pecan pie ( if possible from Delicious Orchards in Colts Neck, NJ)

We pray for good weather cuz there are now about 14 kids younger than 12. I can hardly wait. It is my favorite holiday, since there are sooo many birthdays in Nov.

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

T-Day

- plain stuffing with herbs

The rest is normal fair

- apple pie and pumpkin pie home made only

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

Definitely pearl onions.

I was not saying Oyster stuffing....The oysters under the turkey.....

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

S of Lake Ontario, NY(Zone 6a)

I'm interested in the pearls... onions. How do you prepare them?

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Inside a few oysters are pearl onions??

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

Thanksgiving food is getting REALLY tricky with DD's celiac disease. No pie with normal crust, no ordinary bread stuffing - it's all gotta be quinoa or rice or garfava flour. First year she just didn't eat much. Second year she made her own bread stuffing with GF bread. This year we'll have to wait and and see.

My favorite thing is homemade whole berry cranberry sauce.

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

yes celiac is a tricky one... hard to change everything

South Hamilton, MA

Butternut squash. We eat duck instead of turkey as with just the 2 of us, it would last until Christmas.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

I still have butternut squash from my garden, we always have that on our table too.

The Monadnock Region, NH(Zone 5a)

I am reading everyone's responses this morning and getting VERY hungry! I can almost smell those delicious smells right now. LOL

Allison ~ thanks for adding the Monkey Bread recipe. I had looked for that one for some time, because we haven't had it here in FOREVER. Now the kiddos will be happy, both on Thanksgiving and on Christmas.

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

pearl onions - you need to pare boil them and then cut off the root area. then squeeze out the onion. cream sauce i'll leave to others. basically cream and cheese and then lots of exercise to work off the weight gain.

The Monadnock Region, NH(Zone 5a)

My mom always had pearl onions on the Thanksgiving table, but I wouldn't touch them. But, I love the aroma. Besides, can't you just buy frozen pearl onions now in cream sauce, or is it just not the same?

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

Yep, you're on the money, Bill. A cream sauce.
Don't think I'd do frozen, just the idea of the homemade is what is appealing. It's the only time of the year we do it.
We usually have the big family dinner on Sat. so more people can come.

The Monadnock Region, NH(Zone 5a)

That's a great idea, Jan. Now, if only my clan could buy into it!!

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

That way they can do the other side of the family, too.

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

we only get together with my in-laws - we like the same dishes except for the giblet gravy which is for me - drink the same wine - and I have to schedule dinner around the Cowboy's game so it is easier this way. Xmass is when the gang gets together

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

Oh, we do that, too. My niece always has an open house on Christmas Eve. More good food. Yummo!!!

Medway, MA(Zone 5b)

A must-have for Thanksgiving dinner (and Easter also) is my Sweet Potato Casserole - butter, brown sugar, drool, corn flake and butter topping, more drool . . . ! D-mail me if you want the recipe!
