Cottage Garden Seed Swap & Chat #18

Winchester, KY(Zone 6a)

They're typical white with yellow center, just have extra petals and frilled edges.

Leesburg, FL(Zone 9b)

If mine die again... it will just be that htey are not hardy enough for my zone.

i currently have them up next to my house ... though they are not totally protected, they are much better protected than last year.

New Braunfels, TX(Zone 8b)

I have some White Knight Shastas that I grew from commercial seed this spring. The plants are beautiful, but nary a bloom. Is it common for Shastas to not bloom until the second year?

Tonya

Leesburg, FL(Zone 9b)

Tonya -- i do think so.

Winchester, KY(Zone 6a)

That's how they always do for me too.

Southeastern, NH(Zone 5b)

I can't remember who had asked for Agastache rupestris seeds if I ended up getting some. I don't have a lot - so I want to give you a chance to speak up and remind me, before I put them up for grabs on the main swap page. : )

Leesburg, FL(Zone 9b)

**having hands frantically**

I'd LOVE some.

I got 3 lil ones to germinate last year, but no seeds from them.

I think once you also posted you may have Black and Blue Salvia ... if so, i'll gladly take a few.
dont wanna be a piggy though. Oink Oink.

New Braunfels, TX(Zone 8b)

Well I should have some gorgeous daisies next spring. I guess nature helps us develop patience, if we let it! Hmmm.... should have some seeds for next fall's swap!

Southeastern, NH(Zone 5b)

Okay tcs I thought it was you but I thought I remembered you saying you had some plants so I wasn't sure if you didn't want them any more. : ) You definitely need a lot of these plants for a good show. So we can't have you with only 3 plants : ) I'm tagging them for you. I should have one more pack now that I'm actually going through each pod and picking them out their are more than I originally thought. The pods are kinda sticky (like silenes) so not all the seeds want to fall out on their own.

Leesburg, FL(Zone 9b)

thanks Meredith!!

New Braunfels, TX(Zone 8b)

Hi Meredith,

Looking forward to seeing your list (she says with great anticipation)!

Tonya

Southeastern, NH(Zone 5b)

Oh I forgot to say I don't think my Black & Blues had time to set seeds but I will still check them out. They bloomed very late this year. Probably not a hot enough summer here for them. : )

Southeastern, NH(Zone 5b)

I'm hoping to have at least a partial list by tonight ; ) I just need to figure out how many of each I'll be able to offer. I have to go back and look at my lists of what I already have promised to people. : )

Greenville, IN(Zone 6a)

The reason the daisies die out the second year is I think you have to divide them every spring I r ead somewhere about that, I have a few that I need to divide in the spring but I love t hose shastas and the crazy dasies! Mine didn't bloom until the second year. I'm just down to crazy daisies now lost my shastas cause I didn't divide them :( That's a pain to divide them every year! Really not sure they are worth it lol

Neal offer those seeds and tell the person that you want to know if they come true :) I saved some seed from mine but I don't think I got any good ones, I threw most of them out not enough for a trade even but I collected them kind of late.

perenniallyme, just got on here lol I'll save you some candylily seeds I have plenty, those I haven't done up yet I have two flats full of the stems with pods lol They are so easy too to WS them :) I think everyone germinates :) I'll make a note of it now :) Tell you what though shoot me a dmail just incase :) I'll get to doing those now so I can get them done everyone likes candylilies and they are so much easier to clean than some of the other ones I have lol Warning here though they do cross pollinate that's how you get those pretty colors, mine have changed a lot in the past years. I want some purple ones and every time I trade for seeds I don't get the purple :(

gardengus, nice to see you here, now where is grampa? lol It doesn't look like ansonfan is going to be in this either, I shot him a dmail and link when the link went up for the swap. He always has good basils I know you all like them :)

Did anyone get any of those mini snaps from the Stoke's Swap that Suzy had last year and if they did can they tell me the real name to them aren't they suppose to be perennials? I got two plants that came from seeds mixed in what seeds I got from that swap and those are the cuttiest things really nice for a 'Fairy Garden' little bity snap blooms so cute! I bet the blooms aren't 1/4" big! I'm about ready to bump that thread and see who can tell me if you all don't know :) I have red rocket snaps too that are still blooming from that swap, just beautiful and lots of seeds from them :) I would love a link to those :) For information for the swap.

Last night I had all of the zones on my spreadsheet for the seeds that I have down so far and lost them all hit the wrong button at one point and never found them so some will have zones and some won't :( I'm not going thru all of those again to find the zone lol

tcs, those bachlerbuttons look like the ones that I have 'Jubilee Gem' such a pretty flower they are looking better now that it's gotten cold than when they did in the summer lol

I worked on my seeds all day yesterday bagging and tagging and still I'm not done, I know once I put them up I won't have time to bag and tag lol

New Braunfels, TX(Zone 8b)

Hi Lebug,

Thanks for letting me know about having to divide shasta's. Is it better to do that in the fall or the early spring?

Tonya

Greenville, IN(Zone 6a)

I'm afraid to go back to the swap thread lol I was looking at the wants day before yesterday and that really held me back from getting my list done, I was busy tagging seeds for want lists LOL

I'm afraid to look at the 'have' lists too! The way I keep putting seeds back for me to plant again for next year my plantstands are going to be full enough without asking for seeds LOL I need blinders! So far I have only asked for two seeds I'm sure that will change OINK OINK!!! Not counting seeds that Neal and someone else has put back for me before the swap started, I'm getting a little 'seed shy' and just hope I use this swap to please everyone else :)

Winchester, KY(Zone 6a)

I think spring is better for dividing Shastas. I did some once in fall and they didn't survive the winter- a surprise because I think of them as so tough. In spring, I've never had a problem.

Wasn't someone asking for annual asters a while back? I think I told them about these Ostrich Feather mixed asters I have....

Meredith, was it you perhaps?...

Anyhow, I've added them to my have list.

Greenville, IN(Zone 6a)

You know Tonya I'm thinking the dividing should have been done in the fall what with people saying theirs didn't 'come back' and I didn't divide mine so now I'm getting worried this was the first year for them to bloom. Maybe if it warms up one day I can get out there and do it, it's so rainy, misty rain, right now and cold and will be for the next four days.

Greenville, IN(Zone 6a)

Neal, Ostrich Feather asters? See, you shouldn't post something like that lol I would like to have a few seeds if you have them :) OINK OINK LOL I don't do annual asters but those sound really pretty, do you have a picture of them? I've fallen in love with all of the catus type flowers this year lol

Browns Mills, NJ(Zone 6b)

I have a question for you all please. Do I have to wait 24 hours exactly from my first edit to do another edit? I ran out of edits yesterday and it still won't let me edit. for some reason I thought it was 7 edits per post. I don't know how people running co-ops do it...
Thanks, Andrea

Winchester, KY(Zone 6a)

Here's a link from Swallowtail Gardens (where I got 'em) to the pic, Lea. Its about half way down the page.

http://www.swallowtailgardenseeds.com/annuals/asterann.html

I've got plenty!

Leesburg, FL(Zone 9b)

>>Jubilee Gem'

thanks LeBug... i googled it and YUP, looks like it. at least now i have a name for it.

Jamaica Plain, MA(Zone 6a)

I just did 2 edits in a row and it worked (but they were my first two).

Leesburg, FL(Zone 9b)

Andrea - i thought it was 5 edits ,not 7.

my first year on Daves, when i first encountered this, i posted a question - and one of the Mods came back and told me it was 5 edits per DAY, not in a 24 hrs period. so, at midnight [time zone depending - maybe] you can begin again.

Bites -- but that's the rules i guess.

Leesburg, FL(Zone 9b)

>>Here's a link from Swallowtail Gardens

Ooooooooooo, now you got me 'jones'n for some annual asters.

are those pretty!!!!

New Braunfels, TX(Zone 8b)

tcs too funny! I'm laughing out loud literally picturing piggies jones'n! We are truly a sad lot! I assume there is no antidote to this seed addiction. Do they have rehab facilities for the likes of us?

New Braunfels, TX(Zone 8b)

Just looked up candylilies, was not familiar with those. Interesting how the leaves are very similar to bearded irises. Does anyone have any of those in pink or purple?

Tonya

Southeastern, NH(Zone 5b)

Gemini thank you but let tcs have them please. : ) I'm trying to keep my intake low lol! I would love to try those GIant Dahlias though : )

Leesburg, FL(Zone 9b)

LOL.. meredith!! I was keeping my seed intake this year to a minimum too.

i am really trying NOT too look at peeps HAVES list ... though i am probably up to about 10-15 new seeds. Uggg.

not like last year when i probably got about 150 or so varieties, half of which never made it into soil.

Winchester, KY(Zone 6a)

Meredith, already got your name on a pack of Dahlias, and have plenty of asters to go around. I can't see wanting more than a dozen or so myself,....good grief! I just ran and got the package, and there still must be 500 seeds in there!

..yeah, ok...everybody's probably getting asters no matter what, LOL.

Greenville, IN(Zone 6a)

tcs, your wel come, mine never reseed but then I'm always collecting the seeds I love them so much that I want everyone else to grow them too lol

Tonya, I have orange, red orange, yellow some with spots and without, but no pink or purple :( Oink now if you want some I'm cleaning some for the swap and perenniallyme right now :) If you want some would you put it in a dmail please it's so much easier to keep track of them that way at the end of the swap :) Make sure you put what colors you want but like I said they do cross pollinate a lot that's how they get all of those pretty colors.

EWWW! I just had a worm crawl out of my candylily seed! Has anyone else come across that, I'm soo sick of dealing with weevils from the hibiscus and now I have worms in the candylilies???????

Neal those are pretty, yep, gotta have them lol OINK OINK! Are they really dark blue? Like the picture?

Greenville, IN(Zone 6a)

tcs, the swap is just beginning, there's still time for oodles of seeds and pigging out that's what scares me LOL

Neal, send those in for the storm victums I bet they would love those :) If you have any left at the end of the swap anyway lol

Winchester, KY(Zone 6a)

These are the mixed colors, pinks, blues, purples, lavenders, and white, and I didn't have any blooms that deep blue. However I had them in bad places, planted them too late, then it got really dry, so mine were really cruddy this year. The blooms I got were really pretty, so I'll be taking better care with them this year (I say as I'm gluttonously gobbling more seeds, ensuring that I'll be even more behind in '09!). OINK..

Winchester, KY(Zone 6a)

I don't think that will be a problem- I gasped when I looked at the pack! Glad to give them homes, they aint gonna last forever :-)

I see you're all over here pimping seeds now. Well Neal, you convinced me I have to have some of those aster.

Browns Mills, NJ(Zone 6b)

I waited until after midnight and it hasn't let me do any edits from then up until now. 2 of the times that I was editing, I hit a back button or something and it "edited" the same exact post that I had. How do I ask someone about this question? Right now I'm stuck and I can't edit the stuff from yesterday. Thanks. Andrea

Winchester, KY(Zone 6a)

Got ya listed, maozamom :-)

New Braunfels, TX(Zone 8b)

I have a question, too. I really like how y'all linked to the plantfiles. Do you just cut and paste the http address for that page and it shows up as a link?

Neal, I am so tempted about the asters, too. I keep thinking "where would I put them?" Since you have so many I guess I'll bite too and worry about getting DH to dig another bed later!

Tonya

Jamaica Plain, MA(Zone 6a)

nbgard, thanks for asking how to do links - I've been meaning to ask for a while now and would love to know too!

Greenville, IN(Zone 6a)

Yep Tonya that's how you do it experiment on here :) Don't cut it, copy and paste the address. It won't show up the same until you hit send then you should see your link :) At the first it just looks like a bunch of words.

mygypsyrose, maybe tcs will come back on here and help you she's good with computers :) Or dmail her. Computers are beyond me lol
