Thank you all for your kind words, it means a lot to have you all know what I am feeling and how sad I am.

Today is a new day. I have to learn and move on. Today we are moving the other two goats that we bought as having been bred into the Wick building. This way, they are a bit warmer (it's not a heated building but it's fully enclosed). One looks like she is more likely to be pregnant than the other, but for both it would be a first time, so it is possible the one is carrying twins and the other carrying a single. I will not take any chances.

I am starting all birds on aureomycin today. No idea if it will help but again, it is something I can do. I don't generally use antibiotics, but I feel this is a desperate situation. No eggs for several weeks as a result, so I think I will also treat for coccidiosis at the same time, to ensure none of that is around. I have Sulmet for that.

We went yesterday to the Animal Rescue League and got our two Sicilian donkeys. They are beautiful. We have saved 2 lives even though we lost many, so that makes me feel slightly better. We have named the female "Willow" because I love willow trees and they are so beautiful, and we named the male (her son) "Springfield" because our family has a connection to a famous British racehorse by the same name. Anyway, I will post pictures of them soon.

While we were at the Rescue League, I saw a pigeon. It had been there since December 5. I asked about it. They gave us the pigeon too. We had made a donation for the donkeys since they don't have an official "price" for donks. We got the pigeon "free" with our donation. I have named it Tarquin. It is inordinately friendly. I am stunned by it's sweet nature. It does do a little burbling noise, so I think it might be male. I don't know whether to put it with the roller pigeons or not. Right now he is in the house. He will sit on my shoulder. He was brought in from downtown Des Moines by a kind soul. He is just an ordinary pigeon, but I love him anyway. I'm sure Harmony will know what I mean! (please excuse my messy desk)

Things will get better.

Nice pics Claire. Nice pigeon too. I can't wait for the pics of the donkeys. There was a family in the next town over who owned a donkey. Down the road we will be raising pigs for meat. And as for the chickens, they are being brats. They keep eating the eggs that they are laying. Yesterday it was two. So DH and I are planning on separating them into the two coups to see who's doing what. They won't be caged, just a group in one side and a group in the other.

Way to go girl!!! You there with your trusty sidekick!!! Love the proprietary stance! Is Kelly acting suspicious with the camera?

That is a darling pic Claire! Such a sweet looking bird too. ;-}

You are in our thoughts here. You are such a gem to give homes to so many less fortunate animals.. the goats and donks are gonna be so happy with you.

Remember to take time to count your blessings, and not the negative. You have done so much for so many animals. Give Claire a break too.. she is so precious, and so important to sooo many!

Claire, I just found this thread and cannot tell you how my heart aches for you. All I can say is, never second-guess another creature's karma. I know that's no comfort, but it has helped me detach from the pain in similar situations.

I will raise a glass to dear Rosie and the rest when I get home this evening, wearing my chicken hat.

Terribly sorry to hear this Claire. Hopefully spring will breathe new life back into your farm. Nothing cures sadness like baby chicks and ducks : )

Claire,
I am so so sorry for your losses. I'm sending out big {{{{{{hugs}}}}} to you. Please don't blame yourself. You are outstanding in your love and care of all your animals. Please don't let this taint the wonderful time you had with your parents. Even when we are on the farm things happen. We don't always know why these things happen.
I think Rosie will always be in all of our hearts-Thank you for introducing her to us. :-)

Oh my. A funny thing just happened. My pigeon, Tarquin, who constantly bows and coos, and does little circles in his cage, just laid an egg. I guess Tarquin is now a "she" and I am very surprised.

So, should I leave the egg in there for her to set on for a while, since she put in all that effort, or should I just take it out?

Tarquinella is obviously keen. Perhaps you need to get a boy pidgeon too ^_^

Very cool pigeon. Glad you are back up on line and sorry about your babies. So sad. Not sure if anyone has found this stuff MMS at the link below, I have been using it myself and can say it definately kills virus'. I was getting sick 3 time over christmas and took a dose in the evening and one in the morning and never came down with that funk that everyone had. I also tried it on one of my hens with a cronic eye infection. I dosed her for 2 days and the eye infection cleared right up. So far this stuff is all they say it is. Not expensive either. about $30 for a 6 month supply. Anyway, I have been using it for several months myself and it seems to do what they say.
