Early Bloom

Churubusco, IN(Zone 5b)

We live in northern Indiana - zone 5. I started my seeds in the greenhouse and transplanted to the garden once all fear of frost was past - about mothers day. However, none of my MG bloomed until August. Any way to get them to bloom earlier next year? Thanks

Bloombooster is frequently mentioned...or any other blooming agent that is safe for MGs, but I know thatBloombooster and Shultz flower foods have helped me get extensively longer periods of blooms. Did you use this or any flower food?

Nope. Will this help them bloom earlier or just longer?

Both, Depending... ;) if you mean by longer over a period of months yes, if the type of MG is the type that flowers a lot when conditions are great. From what I have read in the forums some MG types do not bloom as much as some other MG types. Applying bloombooster always will make more flowers to some degree, and, if the vine is grown enough it will make it start blooming earlier as well~I mix slow release pellets in the soil or on top at the planting stage and then every six-eight weeks give some bloombooster diluted in water (it's available in both liquid and powder forms, you see at the garden centers like lowes or H.Depot) Everyone has their own preferences and it also matters is its in a container; and you said yours were in the ground, so as long as you have good drainage you should be in great shape. Is this your first time growing Morning Glories? I have a friend that lives in Anderson, IN. by the way~ :) are you far from there?

Patootie, thanks for the compliment :)

Ya, I tried four different types. Two did fairly well and had lots of blooms once they started but took so long for them to take off that I didn't get to enjoy them for more than about a month. Good news is I didn't have any germination problems.

Lovely MGs, Shelley! Are you planning to grow any over the winter?

You can try photo-treating the seedlings to short daylength periods before transplanting them outdoors...I have read you can induce earlier flowering that way.
