Liz, I hope you have a wonderful day. Hey, you can spill over to the weekend, too! Just hang out or do something special.

Thanks Kathleen! I'm celebrating by trying to get most of my fall planting done...we'll see how far I actually get! LOL

Happy Birthday!
Sounds like a good way to spend your day
Linda

Dublin, CA(Zone 9a)

Thanks Linda! Haven't made too much progress so far...I took a polymer clay class yesterday so I spent my morning making polymer clay stuff instead of gardening. But I'm planning to head outside as soon as I catch up on all the latest posts here!

Happy Birthday ecrane. Sounds like you're doing what you love on your special day.

Hey Liz, just had to pop in and wish you a very Happy Birthday today.

There is nothing better than doing what ever you want on your special day.

Hey, ecrane----hope you have had a wonderful day and will have a STUPENDOUS year!

In the words of my favorite birthday song:
Hippo, birdie, two ewes!

Pasadena, CA(Zone 9b)

Happy Birthday! We've shared quite a few posts thus far, and hope we get to share a lot more in the future. Take care and enjoy your special day! Oh heck, make it a week! :)

Dublin, CA(Zone 9a)

Thanks everyone! I'm making the b-day into a 4 day weekend--this is the first time I have ever taken the day off from work for my b-day and I have to say I quite enjoyed it! I had taken yesterday off because there was a polymer clay class I wanted to take, and then I figured since today was my b-day there was no sense in going to work, might as well take today off too and enjoy myself!

No. San Diego Co., CA(Zone 10b)

Good for you! You're a woman after my own heart. 'They' can't take your birthday away from you, so you need to take good care of it. LOL
Now, what are making with the clay?

Dublin, CA(Zone 9a)

I'll post pics of my clay creations once I get them off the camera and onto the computer...but if you want to see what I was attempting to make in the class, go to this page, scroll down to Christi Friesen, and click on "floral rhapsody" http://www.beadextravaganza.com/2008classes/by_instructor.htm My version needless to say came out a little different (and not nearly as good!), but I'm still happy with it given that I'm very much a beginner at this whole clay thing. And today I used the techniques I learned in class to make a holiday wreath that I think came out really nice.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

WOW Liz, that necklace is gorgeous. You must be so creative to try this!

Glad you took 2 extra days off to celebrate your life! Enjoy!

Happy Birthday!

Happy Birthday, Liz....I vote in favor of doing what you want everyday!

Dublin, CA(Zone 9a)

Kathleen--the polymer clay stuff isn't really that hard, especially when you have someone showing you what to do!

Sherry--thanks for the birthday wishes! I'm also in favor of doing what I want everyday, but unfortunately I haven't figured out a way to pay the bills that way! LOL

No. San Diego Co., CA(Zone 10b)

Wow, Liz, I wouldn't even TRY something that complex. Post your wreath, too. I made one several years ago using plants grown in the garden - that was fun.

Dublin, CA(Zone 9a)

So here are the things I made in the polymer clay class (ignore the wires sticking out of two of them--those were just to make holes so they could be strung on a necklace later if I want to)

And here's a holiday wreath that I made on Friday while I was supposed to be planting things

WOW impressive for sure. Yours look so professional.

I went by the show and walked thru it though I did not have much time. I saw Christi Friesen's booth. Those necklaces are not cheap! There were several glass bead artists that I really liked byut you couldn't buy a finished necklace so that left me out though I probably am too cheap to have bought one anyway. No time to start another hobby. There was one guy who had beautiful glass beads that I keep thinking about. I almost wish I had bought a few just to have. Again those were not cheap either!

I was trying to intuit which person you were. I saw a girl with a green shirt that I thought was you, Liz. LOL Did you wear a green shirt today?

Thanks Kell! I was at the show today but I had on a white sweatshirt so that wasn't me that you saw. Maybe it was my evil twin though--she was there too and kept making me pull out my credit card at every other booth! LOL I have visions of eventually making stuff and selling it so that I can make back all the money I spend on craft supplies, but I'm so far in the hole right now it would be many years before I could break even!

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Did you ever make that mosaic that Michelle had made for the SF Gaden and Flower Show? I so loved it.

Dublin, CA(Zone 9a)

No--I bought the supplies and I still have them, but it's a more complicated messy thing so I need to set aside a good chunk of time to do it and I just haven't had time yet! I'd still like to though, maybe over the holidays when I have a longer time off from work I'll give that a try.

Gilroy (Sunset Z14), CA(Zone 9a)

Love your polymer pieces!!!!

Thanks!

Nice work, Liz!

Wouldn't we all like to make some of our 'hobby' money back? I've been writing checks lately for genealogy records and wish I had an 'angel' to finance me like playwrights used to!

Dublin, CA(Zone 9a)

Thanks Kathleen! Yes, it would be great to have angels like that! My sister is sort of my angel--she doesn't put up any money, but a couple years ago when I was knitting a lot of scarves she would sell them for me at the craft fairs that she sells at. And if I can whip up some Christmasy stuff before her holiday craft fairs start this year then I'll ask her if she'd be willing to sell a few things for me this year. She's actually done a decent job of turning her hobby into a business--not enough that she can quit her day job, but I think she at least makes back the money she spends on supplies.

Gilroy (Sunset Z14), CA(Zone 9a)

I've found it's a LOT easier for me to sell other people's stuff than my own.....I just don't feel comfortable "bragging" on myself like I can on someone else! Ask your sister if she wants to sell some of MY stuff....LOL!

Dublin, CA(Zone 9a)

I know what you mean--I don't know if I could ever sell my stuff in person like my sister does. My eventual plan is to set up a shop on Etsy or Ebay if I get enough things going, that feels different enough from selling in person that I think I could do it. Unfortunately though my day job frequently takes a bite out of my evenings and weekends so I'm not sure I'll ever have time to make enough things to make something like that worthwhile. But if all I ever do are my sister's holiday craft fairs I think I'll get tired of making holiday stuff! I spent some time yesterday making a few wreath and candy cane ornaments and I think I'm already tired of it! LOL

Livermore, CA(Zone 9b)

So sorry I missed this - Happy Birthday wishes to you !!!!!

*Your clay pieces are just exquisite, looks like you've been doing this for years, can't believe you are just beginning!!!!

: D - so glad to hear you enjoyed your day/weekend.

Dublin, CA(Zone 9a)

Thanks Tracy! Polymer clay's not really that hard--I think to do it really, really well is hard but to come up with something that looks like what I did isn't that hard, it's not at all like working with real clay. If you did a lot of Play Doh as a kid and know how to use a toaster oven you can do polymer clay! LOL OK, maybe not quite that easy but it's definitely easier than it looks!

San Diego, CA(Zone 10b)

Dear Ecrane,
I'm sorry I've missed your birthday while I was away in Brazil! I still wanted to wish you a wonderful new year of life, and thank you for being such an invaluable teacher to all of us!

Is that YOU hanging out, ecrane? in the first pic? What a great birthday idea. Not sure you did it, hanging out that is. But it sounds like you had fund, nevertheless. Happy birthday.

Thanks Roberta & Linda! And no, that's not me hanging out in the first pic--I'm not that colorful or talented! LOL I find I get more done right-side up anyway!

ecrane3,
Happy Belated Birthday! Hope that your birthday was fulfilling, and that this year is the happiest and most rewarding yet! Am sending a picture of a California Live Oak that lives here with us. She's older than all of us! : ) LOL!
