I just divided two really huge growths of
Dietes bicolor http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/1882/
and
Dietes irdioides http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/572/
They are in my driveway for now, free to anyone who wants to come by my Fremont home. As best as I can tell I am NOT in the LBAM quarantine area, but right next to it. I have not seen anything that resembles that little pest.
California Prop Whatever Warning: These plants may contain slugs, snails, sowbugs or other vermin that are not enjoyed by most of us.
D-mail me for address as the one in the address exchange is for mail only.

Free Dietes in Fremont
PotEmUp, let me ask you a question, if I may? If I plant these in my parking strip with weed cloth surrounding them, are they unlikely to reproduce by seeds thrown from the pods? Linda
They will probably still reproduce. Weed cloth seems to develop a layer of dirt on top, which still creates a viable breeding ground. The Dietes are fairly shallow rooted, so they they are very easy to pull up. I have not seen any seedlings from any of the Dietes bicolor, but many from the Dietes iridioides. The bicolor may just require more moisture to germinate. http://www.plantzafrica.com/plantcd/dietesbicol.htm indicates it is the most primitive of the species.
My personal experience is that they are near an area with weed cloth and large river rock. They do show up in the river rock, along with a myriad of other volunteers, both ugly and pretty (including guara!)
Guara?! Another I'm looking at. Perhaps it says something about me that it's the primitive
I favor, eh? Now that's scary. [chuckling]
