Mountain Laurel

Campobello, SC(Zone 7a)

We just moved into our new house this summer and have a wooded section in back that has an area that pretty steeply goes down to a creek. I haven't explored it completely until today when we had a friend over. There are a bunch of trees back there with the neatest shape and bark that he said was Mountain Laurel. Would that be "Kalmia latifolia" which is the main thing I found when doing a plant files search on ML? I can get pictures, just have to go back out and take my camera with me, which I wanted to do anyway as the creek was beautiful.

I would post pictures if you can--Kalmia is probably the most common thing that's called mountain laurel, but common names are very unreliable so if you want to be sure then posting a picture is your best bet.

Thanks ecrane3. We didn't get back out there today but I will try sometime this week and get some to post.

I went back out this morning and took a bunch of pictures because it was just so pretty. I'll post 2 but I have the rest up on my picasa site at http://picasaweb.google.com/kbilliu/OurWoodsAndCreek# if anyone's interested.

Here's a closeup I took.

Nice shots. Looks like Kalmia latifolia to me. The first shot of the bark is a particularly good identifyier. Take a look at these images:

DevilDogs, congratulations on your new place, especially since you have some woods - just don't forget to go back there next spring to see the flowers!

Snapple, if I had seen that bark shot in the link you sent, I would have recognized it. Same for your picture Claypa! I just wasn't getting the instant recognition off the pictures from plant files. Thank you both!
Unfortunately, we are going to loose quite a few of these when we clear some of this for the horses as I guess it's toxic to them. There is plenty down by the creek which is too steep for them to get to so we will be able to save all of those. I think I'm going to try and transplant some of the smaller one's too. I have just the perfect spot for them up by the house.
