Great job, Gordon, can't wait to see the resulting blooms!

Me too!!!

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Good deal. You should be able to weather just about anything with your winter home for flowers.

Brooklyn, NY(Zone 7b)

Shirley.. well winters over.. but it will do another winter somewhere .......the house will be broken down.. and stored/ put up down at mothers... or sold.. there's no room for it erected through the summer.. I wish.. but it will stack well.. or perhaps it will leave.. for some use somewhere else..
Kim.. thanks..your're welcome to blossom visit.. bee or not
Debra.. well thanks.. we'll surely have some pictures..
While unloading the polycarbonate from the car.. a local nursery owner stopped aside me and said he'd had piles of it in his warehouse.. silly me.. but it's on the east wall.. now... and it will be over 3/4 of the roof tomorrow... we got closed down with diminishing light today..

Gordon I am still waiting for my brug seeds, nothing yet . I sent yours a couple of weeks ago . I have not heard you have even received my stardancers . Let me know please and I can get the post office to investigate through a mail rifling/loss if you haven't received them .

Brooklyn, NY(Zone 7b)

Yes.. yours and Debra's seeds were posted today... sorry for the delay there... last week was lost with a few unusual time issues... sorry for my delay.. you've got an assortment of fine named brug crosses from the US and Denmark.. plus some other interesting items.. you'll be rocking..

Brooksville, FL(Zone 9a)

ok. thanks Gordon was getting worried there they were lost

Brooklyn, NY(Zone 7b)

surely.. well.. I wanted to awaken the dormant bunch.. so they wouldn't be too far behind the rest of the lovelies.. already ready to go.. from their winter .. tanning under the sun lamps down stairs

Ahhh such beauty you have there Gordon!...... I will be at the flower show tomorrow gonna see some live blooms yippeee!

nitey nite : )

Brooklyn, NY(Zone 7b)

ell the remake is complete.. we've about 60sqst of glazing on the house now... no longer just a cool dormant structure.. it's now a greenhouse.. and new problems.. like over heating.. and needing to water.. spray.. repot..and the list goes on..
so this first picture shows the roof being removed inbetween the framing.. easer than disassembly.. these cut out pannels will be used to construct a few foam planters..
Here I am standing on it's roof... how many can post pictures standing on the top of their greenhouses.. anyway.. just to display the strength.. I was up there anyway..
at the advice of the legal staff... Edited to say
This is a professional... do not try this at home

OK.. not it's just kick back and get ready to count early blooms.. ok.. maybe a bit of work to coax them free.. but this is one that needed this help .. a strong one from Gary.. a bit light in color now... but in two weeks she should be really leafing out.. there goes her standard form though.

Grantsboro, NC(Zone 8b)

Wow looks good. I can't wait to get my plants out side and next year they will be in my new Green House. Gotta get the reswt of the river rocks inside and I will be good to go. Oh yeah after I get a good fan.LOL

Love my burgs. I think they will love the coastal air.

Well.. thanks all.. I seem to have two speeds... full tilt and asleep.. I love both..
So.. the greenhouse adaptation experienced it's first cold sunny day today.. I was watching it some.. at 9 am it was 89* F inside.. and 89% humidity.. by 10:30 it was 106*F inside.. and 90 % humidity.. so I went up and opened the door.. to drop todays high some... it soon sucked out the excess heat.. now it's down to it's 41* F .. matching the outside temps.. I'll going up to shutthe door ...and lock out any additional cold....and let the stored heat in the soil warm it back up some.. lots of work this greenhouse business..

Thank you so much Gordon, seeds arrived so I have them soaking now.I love the runner bean one , so funny you added that.:)
I haven't tasted one of those since I left England 10 years ago. Going to have fun with that one. It will have lots of tlc...May have to container grow it on the pool deck so it doesn't get fried. I also love Broad beans and I don't care what that woman says ( can't think of her name right now ) , anyway she is some so called cooking guru says ( lima beans are the same as broad beans!) . No Way!!.
And for anyone reading..Broad beans raw or with parsley sauce are delish...and you depod them you do not peel the actual beans. That is bs.

.Broad Windsor is a great variety. I tried them here last winter and they grew great and flowered but didn't set. maybe too late for the pollinators.
I will try again

No signs of life from my Stardancers yet :(

Anyway Gordon will update on the seeds :0) once again thank you

Brooklyn, NY(Zone 7b)

Well..Shirley.. you said stand back ..that they would take off.. with the new light..well I woke them up 5 1/2 weeks ago.. and we've got the first buds on Georgia Peach.. I know.. alot of that has to do with what it was doing when they went to sleep.. but still.. first they had to make some leaves to do anything.. now a BUD..
Got a few Stardancers to go up with them soon.. in anothertwo-threeweeks..everything will go outside.. and the cool room/greenhouse will be dis assembled.. and maybe driven south to be erected ..stored here for next year..or sold and erected somewhere.. but I'm in favor of the dormant concept..more than ever.. now..

Gordon, how awsome.. I bet you are so ready for spring!

(Tammie) Odessa, TX(Zone 7b)

Well, Gordon, the verdict... was your winter easier with this set up? Your plants sure seem to have liked it and I think you did a wonderful job. I can't imagine selling it unless you consider it a failure and don't plan to use the idea again.

Brooklyn, NY(Zone 7b)

oh.. it's mostly storage of it here....there's no available space.. so it's easier to sell it .. than store it.. it has to come down.. just so there's more garden.. and it blocks the sun.. and it sits where the shade cloth/ aclimating area is.. and where a 1/2 dozen brugs will become trees
it's been an absolutely perfect soluition.. in every reguard.. easy to heat.. I never increased it above the no-freeze setting on the heater.. and there were six higher levels of heat available.. and two fan speeds and it's been compleatly trouble free.. I was never inside it for two months.. for anything
the weight of it's stored plants.. kept it in place.. and everything about it is water tight.. and just about air tight as well.... it does have double doors.. but they are weather stripped.. inside ..with a highend rubber beading..
I sprayed the recipe on everything and closed the door this evening.. as the temperatures dropped.. it's 49 outside.. and 56 inside.. with 78% humidity.. I haven't heated it for the last month.. it's been a dream

Maybe you can find someone outside the city with storage space who would trade space for some beautiful plants. That sure would be a handy solution. You sure have the beautiful plants and it would be terrible to see you lose your perfect plant protector for next winter.

Baytown, TX(Zone 9b)

That is awesome how it worked out and kept your babies safe. I am like LhasaLover and agree maybe you could trade some plants for storage space. It seems like such an expense and not counting the work to build it ro have to remake one every year.

If you sell it to a plant person that needed one for winter you should be able to sell it and break even or make a profit even.

You can store it here. ;o) hehe Would take alot of postage to get it here. lol

(Kim) Philadelphi, PA(Zone 6a)

Well done Gordon!!!
Cheers!

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Way to go Gordon!! Can't wait to see your rooftop pictures when everything is in full bloom. They will be even more exciting. Your posts are always informational. Thanks.

La Grange, TX(Zone 8b)

Gordon, I'm glad your foam house made it through winter. Many of us here followed your experiment through winter. Glad it was a success!
