it's cold and snowing here today... so i thought i'd play with google translate.. and the text for this picture said "Such as fresh snow is white" :-)

Very interesting websites! Thanks for posting those links.

Has anyone gotten seeds and grown any of the "peony" MGs? Do thye go by a different name in English if sold here in the USA? I saw several vines/blooms in this year and last years shows from the second link. Some real beauts!!!

CEEJ~ VERY COOL, I LOVE THE MUSEUM~!
Some of translations are always worth a grin. An old friend/co-worker and I had a web page (long forgotton now) that we checked every day for new "mis-translations", lol. Seriously, though ~some really nice links and, man, what I would pay to go to the Mornnig Glory Museum...We need one in the US! .. or is there?

ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhsss very nice! Love this! Thanks! ;) Debra

I really liked the second one (had seen the first one but enjoyed the return visit)!

If you find a reference web site that gives solid information on seed description for the different JMG cultivars, I'd like to see it. Isn't surfing the web like a treasure hunt sometimes?

I find a very good idea for 2009 , not very esthetics but practical .

I think walking between the two rows of vines would be very pleasing, after they have grown, blocking the view but having the sun filter through ~

Dany - I actually like that idea of rows of MGs! I kind grow mine in a row along my picket fence. With two rows, that would certainly make a beautiful tunnel of vines! :-)

thanks everyone.... some more.... enjoy :-)

how high are the steel supports, Dany?
:Darren

szarvas, Hungary

This one it's 6' or 8' tall
There are no pic of what 's look like one month late , perhaps a realy realy mix-border .
Depend whish vine you use , strong vine like purpurea, tricolor , Tie Dye or some strong nil like Chocolate silk - Mt. Fuji , it will quickly be a disaster.
With medium vine like Akatsuki , Heina, Hama it's a good solution.

another arrangements.

Thumbnail by dany12

hi dany that second pic shows soaker hoses or something similar...
how far apart do you think the vines are planted?

colin

szarvas, Hungary

The pic come from Japan . perhaps a seeds compagny production field.
I think in the line 2,5 ' and 6 ' between two line .

If they must make the hand pollinisation they need an army hummingbirds or Filipinos ?
They have a trick !

Those poles look like bamboo, (?) (which does of course come in many sizes)... I think the distances are a great estimate. Hummingbirds or butterflies etc., they have to have a huge amount of wild pollinators but would that not screw up the gene pool? ~unless the pollinators have favorites...could be enclosed too like a giant butterfly tent, though it does not look that way.
:D

Colin et al., Check out the incredible flower forms on this web site (found on Eiji Nitasaka's web site):

There are several pages I found just clicking on the links to see what loaded...amazing!

Joseph

cheers gerris...

do you think they really had yellow blooms or is it a bit of artistic license?

I would think they had yellow flowers as shown. What a shame those strains and the others in those paintings were lost.

apparently they did have yellow flowers all that time ago and as gerris says they became "lost"....
heres a link to yonedas site where they have a couple of pictures of a 'yellow' mg
http://protist.i.hosei.ac.jp/asagao/yoneda_db/E/DOCs/future.html
so maybe we will see a yellow mg some day :-)

colin

and heres a thread about yellow mg's
http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/771298/
scroll down....

Ah to get our hands on some of the Q1211 strain, what a nice yellow flower!

gerris... to get my hands on any of the 'lost' ones would be a dream they're just wonderous....
i love those old japanese prints...

Look at the vivid colours of the MGs on this page!

http://www.flickr.com/photos/nobuflickr/sets/72157606885276375/

Ceej1963, i was thinking that those packets would make a killer wallpaper or some sort of curtain, unreal...or print on thin sheets of metal and do a windchime! sorry~ the brain does wander....lol
:Darren

fernman23... i've seen some of those prints for sale on ebay..... christmas is coming :-)

gerris2... the q numbers? do you know what they mean... are they registered strains? and if so who registers them? ... just wondering

Colin,

I do believe the hort scientists / botanists at Kyushu University either established that registry of JMG strains/lines or took it over from a previous entity who had established that system. I hope someone more knowledgeable will correct me or add to this answer. If you check the number for this cool JMG it is 0751-5242 is Q751. It is the so-called Ten-Ten JMG you see being marketed on eBay by he who can't be named.

Joseph - I like this picture very much also http://translate.google.com/translate?hl=en&sl=auto&tl=en&u=http://mg.biology.kyushu-u.ac.jp/mg-files/strainlist-brandnew/06catalog/pages/0468-5858.html =). Do you know what that is called?

Dany - the pictures you have posted here:
http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/fp.php?pid=5730816 and here
http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/fp.php?pid=5735912

http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/fp.php?pid=5751530

Eliz, it is called Ipomoea igottahavit ssp. sounusualensis (in other words, haven't a clue LOL).

Toronto, ON(Zone 5b)

LOL LOL. I was already highlighting your "Ipomoea igottahavit ssp. sounusualensis", copying and pasting it and googling it LOL. Thought it was a new sp. LOL

hahahaha gotcha hahahaha

gerris the pic you posted doesn't have the golden leaves and isn't a kikyou... it looks like (not that i'd know... i've never seen one) Kai no Kasumi.... onalee's have a pic....

also i thought all ipomea where ssp. igottahaveit! :-) ...i just hope they're not all called igottakeepit otherwise i'll have to move into the greenhouse so they can have the house....lol

evr... how do you get them to flower in such small spaces? i have read about Photoperiodic Control here:
http://www.pubmedcentral.nih.gov/pagerender.fcgi?artid=1067125&pageindex=4
and here(better)
http://www.journalarchive.jst.go.jp/jnlpdf.php?cdjournal=pjab1945&cdvol=29&noissue=7&startpage=368&lang=en&from=jnlabstract

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Excellent link, Colin! Thanks for sharing that with all of us!

I only got one reverse tube seed from 3 vines. I even tried hand-pollinating them. Will have to grow that one out again to see if I can get more seeds. Love it!!!
