We got 2 llamas!

Oxford, NS(Zone 5b)

Yesterday we purchased 2 llamas! We are very excited about this addition to our farm. They are 2 girls and half sisters, and one is due in February. Their names are Hazel and Cabernet. Does anyone else have llamas? We primarily got them as goat companion/guardians and will be seeing how we like them, and if we really like them, we might have a couple more in future.

I will post pictures later today when I take some. They are lovely girls!

i am so jealous!!

Dunnellon, FL(Zone 9a)

Ohhhh....I can't wait to see the pics! Have thought about Llamas or Alpacas, but haven't spoke with anyone who has (or has had) any.
Can't wait to hear your experiences. Have they SPIT, yet? LoL

Mine, Mine, Mine, Mine, mine......OHhhhhhh Yeah!!!

(Tia) Norman, OK(Zone 7a)

OMG Claire, that is just too funny, what is next hunny. Monkey? I am excited for you. I have actually thought about llama's. I want some ostrich but not as pets. I had some in a stroganoff (sp?) this past spring and it was better than a rib eye steak.

Franklin, OH(Zone 6a)

There is an Alpaca Farm close to us (on the way to my folks place) and I just love to go by them! They are so little and cute!

Kathy's friend Wally has llamas. He said you have to watch their ears. If they're forward they won't be spitting on you. :o)

Sugar Valley, GA(Zone 7b)

THERE You are Tia!!!! You are AWOL from the Girl Talk list...That constitutes deeeeep Kim Chee!!!

(Tia) Norman, OK(Zone 7a)

I was there this morning
I posted right after you. Life is happening around here and NOW I THINK it is settling down until the next drama situation appears. I wont go MIA ever ever again, unless I am on vacation.

Sugar Valley, GA(Zone 7b)

Warning... Do NOT get Ostrich...Farmer D here had them for 8 yrs.. One nearly killed him...You think that spur on a Roo is bad.. you aint lived till an Ostrich has spurred you according to him...Beside the danger, he said they are extremely high maintenance, for negligible profit...

Sugar Valley, GA(Zone 7b)

Someone, somewhere, posted about their LLamas coming in the house to sleep at night...The mirrored closet doors caused them to spit until they figured out it was themselves in the reflection, and then they couldn't get them away from the doors...LOL

Rankin, IL(Zone 5a)

awwww I wanna a llama... my friend calls my silkies llama chickens..LOL almost bid on one at the action.. no llama fencing here yet..

What was the name of Noah's wife? :0)

Dunnellon, FL(Zone 9a)

That's so funny...reminds me when I came home from picking up my frizzle and cochin silkie. DH thought I was only coming home with those 2. When my son came in and handed him Russia (the pure white Silkie at 5 weeks old). He asked: "what is it?? Oh my god, don't tell me! Where are we going to put an Emu??" LoL.

Oxford, NS(Zone 5b)

No, they have not spit yet. One of them (the pregnant one) spit at the other one in the truck on the way home. I think she got cross because they were too confined. There were bits of chewed grass in it. Ugh.

Luvs - I think next might be turkeys, but that would be next year. No ostrich plans here. An alpaca might be appealing though.

Music - that is hilarious about the silkie/emu comment. I laughed out loud in the office!

The llamas will DEFINITELY NOT be coming in the house at night to sleep. Under any circumstances! Well, maybe if a tornado was coming.

Catscan - Noah had a wife? What was her name? I have no idea.... Did she have a llama? I'm all befuddled....

Sugar Valley, GA(Zone 7b)

Ill Bet Merlot does until MOMMA can get there to get him... ROFL...
and HE WILL be a house LLama...
I had a horse (13.2 hands) once that learned to open the screen door and come in to help himself to Vanilla Wafers that were kept (Just for him) on the top of the fridge....I would hear...CLOMP CLOMP CLOMP CLOMP< SCREEEEECHH< BANG!!! rattle rattle, Plop....Munch munch munch.... BULLET!!!! Are you in my house again???? SCREEEEEEECH , BANG!! CLOMPITY CLOMPITY CLOMPITY, THUMP!!!

(Tia) Norman, OK(Zone 7a)

No I am not getting an ostrich they are mean bad. woot I have something Claire dont. I have turkeys. And I love my turkeys, you will love them also, mine were never people raised like we do if you know what I mean, but Tyson and Tessla are so friendly. What would one use (sorry) a LLama for besides a pet?

Lodi, CA(Zone 9b)

This is just too funny! I had a calf that learned to get in the sliding glass door and get on my bed and go to sleep! One time I caught her watching TV!!!!

Reynoldsville, PA(Zone 6a)

Apparently it was "Naamah". http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_names_for_the_Biblical_nameless#Noah.27s_wife

I use to have a Welsh pony that would try to get in the car with me.

Are you going to pack with your llamas, Moxon.....or just use them to guard against canids?

(Grumble, grumble....Clair gets all the good animals....grumble....no fair.....grumble.....)

(Zone 7b)

Good haul there Claire now i can't keep up with your llamas i don't have the room but we can still talk about our pigeons and i hope you get some diamonds mine love their great big cage i dmailed you about.
I tried to get a goat but they kept it and i called about pheasants and i'm waiting on that call.
I think i may have a lead on a peacock.............

IS IT FEBRUARY YET??? HE needs to be born on the 23rd....;-))))

Oxford, NS(Zone 5b)

One of the llamas might be good for a pack animal. She is very gentle. I am amused by all your stories about cows and horses and such getting into cars and houses. Rosie the chicken tries to come in the back door sometimes but that's all (so far).

Harmony, if you ever want a goat, you let me know and I will have one for you!!

No, General Dusty, it is not yet February. I was hoping for Valentines Day myself, but I will consult with Cabernet and see if the 23rd is possible.

And now, may I present, Hazel (front) and Cabernet (back). It was just starting to get dark when I took these but hopefully they are good enough to see them for now!

What Beautiful animals and one is pregnant i couldn't even imagine what a baby llama would look like probably just the cutest little thing.

Congratulations and i wish i could feel of one are they as soft as they look?

Lodi, United States

Oh the are lovely...such subtle warm colors.

Oxford, NS(Zone 5b)

Luvs - forgot to answer your question. Lots of people use llamas as "protector" or "guardian" animals for flocks of goats or sheep. They are quite aggressive with predators such as fox, coyote, coon, etc. I hope since my chicken coop is also connected to their area that they will be active on any predators who decide to come a-knocking! Also, you can see that they were shorn for their fur in spring. Their fur will grow back in and then we can shear them again in spring. If the fleece is good quality, the spinner/fiber artists like to buy it.

Harmony - they are very soft - especially the part in the middle that was previously shorn. The longer fur gets a little mixed up with bits of straw and stuff, but it is still very warm and cozy. If you put your hand into the fur, it is like wearing a huge mitten.

Baby llamas are 12 to 30 lbs when born and quite self-reliant!

(Zone 7b)

BOY! Who wants to go to Claires on a field trip and see all the animals..........Lets load up a bus and go we can pack a picnic lunch.

Oxford, NS(Zone 5b)

The funny thing is that Cabernet's last baby (male) was pure black and white. Not a speck of brown anywhere!

Oxford, NS(Zone 5b)

You're all welcome anytime! We have the room for campers and tents and somebody can even use the guest room and the sofa! Midwest pulled pork sandwiches and Iowa wine for everybody! Oh, and lots of eggs for breakfast!

(Zone 7b)

I just had the urge to sing "She'll be comein round the mountain when she comes YEE HAW!!
OH! She'll be comein round the mountain! she'll be comein round the mountain! She'll be comein round the mountain when she come's YEE HAW!!

Lodi, United States

It's called a "crea"! I just remembered baby llamas and alpacas are called "creas"!

Clarksburg, MO

OH MY GOSH CLAIRE! Did Kelly forget to give you the meds I sent him. The meds were supposed to control impluse buys and also to ease the need to add 30 different types of animals before christmas.

I need Kelly's personal cell number and also the sanitarium located in your town has been notified. So don't try to load up and leave because the state troopers have the roads blocked.

Just breathe in a paper sack and try to imagine the poop on Noah's boat and maybe you will come to your senses.

LOL

Sheila

P.S. They ARE really beautiful!

Oxford, NS(Zone 5b)

Yes, except it's spelled Cria. Canadian Spelling Police intervention moment!!

Here are some pictures of baby/young llamas from an Iowa breeder.

http://showcase.netins.net/web/blackcatcreekfarm/black_cat_creek_farm_004.htm

I'm singing right along with you Harmony!

Oxford, NS(Zone 5b)

Hi Sheila! Yes, I'm definitely certifiable, and they are likely to come and collect me at any moment! I think Kelly took the meds himself, although they weren't very effective because he was certainly with me on the llama purchasing mission! LOL!

Did Noah have a compost heap? Maybe that's where the worms lived, in pairs of course.

Lodi, United States

No they are spelled "Crea". International rules apply.

Actually, you are right. But the site I checked spelled it "crea". And I like that spelling better:0)

Oxford, NS(Zone 5b)

You Californians....always having to do things differently....sigh....

;-)

(Zone 7b)

I now own 8 bird cages and not a bird in site so Claire yours isn't as bad as mine.

Vancouver, WA(Zone 8a)

Claire,
I was watching this site today, but didn't have a lot of time to reply. I just love Llamas and Alpacas. You are definitely certifiable. Just where do you find the time to care for all these darling little creatures?!?! Career in law and farming just doesn't go hand in hand to me, but MORE POWER to you! ha!

Should I someday get off my 9,000sqfoot lot and get some acreage, I'll totally be there right with you. Goats, llamas, miniature donkeys, the works!
