I just purchased a butterfly bush or oxford bush. Has anyone had success in rooting these? I tried new green cuttings in water and they rotted. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks Joan
Any tips on rooting a butterfly clerodendrum
I am going to watch too. I have wondered the same thing for awhile now so thanks for asking the question!
Hi:
I have had the best luck with older stem cuttings on Clerodendrum thomsoniae. I am not sure which Clerodendrum you have but I would think the same genus would have similar propagation needs. I will get a pic for you tomorrow as I have 2 that I just moved into 4" pots. I hope this helps
Dave
Thanks any info is appreciated.
Dave, The cultivar for that plant is clerodendron ugandense. I have never had any root so any help you can find, I would appreciate too. Thanks, Linda
I received a dmail advising me to take a 6-8 inch cutting not new tender growth dip in rooting hormone and plant it directly in a good potting mix with lots of perlite. Keep moist at all times but not too use ziplock bags to cover. I am attempting this now. I have tried water with no luck and soil with ziplocks with no sucess. So I will try this method. Joan
I have a clerodendron ugandense and have not tried to root, might now, thanks for the tips:0) I do have another question concerning it tho. It's not hardy here so it is in a pot. I've noticed it's forming a sort of 'root crown' above the soil. Is this normal or should I repot it and add some soil to the top?
1 of mine has that also it looks very healthy so I am just going to watch it and leave it alone for now. It is such a pretty plant I wish it was easier to root.
I have rooted ugandense. I took cuttings of the new growth and they rooted fairly quick with rooting hormone. I used my coke bottle terrariums and mist them. Good luck.

I have rooted the clerodendrum tricotimum , like the coke terrarium method.I used hard cuttings, and they seemed to root real easy.Mike
[I have a home made propagation box.]
Thanks everyone for all the info. Joan
I take cuttings. place in straight perlite in pots with saucer under them, then water from the bottom up. this works for me after many other failures. Just don't give up. If one doesn't work for you, try another tech. I have several growing for me now that have just taken root.
I've rooted dozens of Clerodenrum ugadense ("Blue Butterfly Flower") cuttings over the last couple of years...got 6 growing happily in the GH now. These were VERY late cuttings, made just before the night of our first frost last week. All 6 have struck roots already. I've always made my cuttings from new green growth. I found that cutting more hardened growth of these things slowed down root formation. Still got them to root, but they took MUCH longer. I've always just dipped them in Rootone, stuck them in a 4" pot of very damp artificial soil, put them in a 7" saucer, covered them with a 21/2 litre clear plastic soda bottle (lid screwed on), stuck them on the heat mat (72 degrees), and 2-3 weeks later those cuttings were fully rooted. Then I took the lid off the soda bottle to let them adapt to the (relatively) lower humidity (usually 70-80%) of the GH. A week later, I took the soda bottle off them completly. A week later, they came off the heat mat and got moved to a "growing out" spot. These guys are really easy to root, and SOOO worth the effort.
