I posted this over on the trees forum too.
Every fall we have a ton of these larva fall from the tree after cold evenings. The tree is a white ash and does not have sign of ash borer, though both trees suffer from ash yellows.
Any idea what these are? Can they simply be flies?

These could be the larvae of ash seed weevils (Coleoptera: Curculionidae; Lignyodes spp.). Mature larvae usually emerge from the infested seeds in late autumn to enter soil and pupate - see http://www.forestpests.org/ash/ashseedweevils.html
