Plant Variety Information

Langley, WA(Zone 8b)

Does anyone here by chance know of any good sources for information on plant varieties - such as the history of a variety (when it was introduced) and any applicable PP or PVP information? Any suggestion of sources would be quite appreciated.

Thanks,
Amanda

Usually if you Google images of plants and click on the ones you are interested in, a lot of informative sites will come up.Some of the best are universitys and agricultural extensions.Books are also one of the top sources as far as history, cultivars, what plants are now in different familys (nonem?)Never could spell that word.

Googling will definitely get you the patent info pretty quickly--any nursery selling a patented or PPAF plant is required to list the patent info with the plant when they sell it, so any reputable mail order nursery who's selling it will have that info on their website.

Thank you both very much for the reply. The Google route is the one that I've been taking along with the 'Garden Seed Inventory' for veggies - I just wanted to make sure that there wasn't a more comprehensive source that I was missing. And that's very good to know about the nursery listings - I've seen some that listed that info and wasn't completely sure whether the other ones just weren't listing it.

Thanks,

I found this beta version of google patents a couple weeks ago. I had no idea it existed...It's a lot easier to use than the US patent office search, and I don't know how complete it is, but if your plant comes up in a search it will tell you when it was introduced and by whom, etc.

Wonderful! Thank you for passing that along - I haven't seen that one yet. I've been trying to use the US patent and other patent search engine which half the time I can't even tell if I'm using right. I'll have to give that Google one a try.
