Cookie the Goat and her Meningeal Deer Worm Paralysis...

Oxford, NS(Zone 5b)

Awww....Sheila and Harmony - you two are sweet to say that I have any maternal instinct at all. Thanks. :-)

Sheila - your kids were really sweet kids and easy to get along with. I'm sure they have their moments, but for some reason they were just different to me than the usual response I have with kids. I would borrow yours no problem! LOL!

I'm sure my mother wishes it had come out in a different way, but she'll have to make do with furry grandkids.

Hey i got a 16 yearold half man and i wouldn't loan him out he helps me do all sorts of stuff and he is the only one i have to play with LOL!!

I have no kids either. I do make a great aunt to my two nephews. I love them then can throw them back.

Here is Cookie today - you can see, if you compare to the photo 5 posts up, that her stance is continuing to improve. She is almost normal in her stance now. She still sometimes drags her leg a little, especially if she tries to run. She can get up and down no problem and is eating well. I think she is truly recovered and now she just needs to improve her muscle tone. Lots of goat walkies in her future!

Here is another one facing the same way as the picture from a few days ago. What a change!

OH!!! I'm so happy cookie is better and you say i know so much and look what you did for this little goat^_^

Thanks L2G2! It has been a bit of a bumpy road but I feel like we learned a lot. Anytime I see that symptom in a goat again (dragging a hind foot or leg) I will be at the vet in seconds. The earlier you can catch this parasite, the better. It cost $70 for the spinal tap and about $60 for the meds, which might seem like a lot for a goat that cost us $35, but for me it was important to get her proper care. We are so new to goats, and there is much to learn, but I feel this was a positive experience despite the discomfort for the goat, because it will help us in future, and I learned how to give injections! And she has recovered, which is the most important thing.

Well thank you Harmony - I learned from the vet and from the reading I did, and some links that Catscan found too. Anytime I see anyone with a goat question about dragging a hind foot or leg, I will be able to tell them exactly what to do! Every experience with an animal teaches us something. :-)

Amazing.. I'm thrilled for you.. She looks fantastic! What a fantastic outcome.. She is really cute.. I bet you two will have a special bond the rest of your lives.
I saved a horse that was suffering.. (starved, no water in summer heat, cut up all over with a nail in her foot).. She treated me like her child.. LOL Some of the things we got into would have spelled disaster with any other horse!
When Cody was 3 he walked under her belly and reached up and was tickling her.. This was while I was cutting an abscess out of her hoof with a hoof knife!!! I thought we were both dead.. but being the trusting mare she was.. she just brought her head down between her knees and sucked her tummy up to try to see him.. I put her foot down and she nuzzled Cody's head with her lips.
I loved that mare with all my heart. Now get this.. She was a tattooed race horse!

yes it does Claire, I am learning so much from you.

To be able to help an animal recover is priceless when i ordered my vaccine people were like it's $65
and i said yes but my flock is worth it.
If you could be here and see the 40 birds that i vaccinated you would know how pricless it was.

I know helping cookie was priceless to you too.

Oh I could imagine, with both of you. I am so glad all is working out Harmony with you pretty birds. I dont look at them because I know me, I have said for as long as I can remember NO BIRDS IN THE HOUSE, now I want some Diamonds. Yes I peeked. The pretty grey/blue birds with the orange rings around their eyes. I melted.

Cookie is looking so grand, I try not to look at the goat pictures either. I do want some more but I have to get a better fence around my yard, gardens before I can.
