AArmstrong Garden Centers - Clearance Sale 10/21-26/2008
Cool! Thanks for the heads up!
I'm trying to resist the urge...but they're right down the street from me so I'm sure I won't hold out for too long! LOL
I got a nice big (slightly battered) Brugmansia x candidans (white, not sure of the variety) (sp?) for 20 bucks, and a beautiful Crocosmia repens 1 gal. for $5. I had my eye on this very Brug and was thrilled to see it there after work! It went the whole day without a buyer. I just went out to smell it as I had heard they were particularly fragrant in the evening. What an unusual scent! It was not what I expected, but very lovely. Kind of minty, even. I thought it might smell like a Nicotiana - I don't know why . . . Anyway - the sale continues and I am seriously out of money. Let's see - I can eat for the next two weeks, or I can have more plants. . . Oh, it's tempting to go on a fast!
I will not go...I will not go....I will not go...
Okay - I bought a Dr. Hurd Manzanita today for 5 bucks. So I'll be a vegetarian for the rest of the week!
Oh, wow, they had that at Armstrong? Darn, now I'll have to check it out.
OK, PotEmUp, it's YOUR fault! Went to get our flu shots this morning and stopped at Armstrong on the way to lunch. Talk about ruining the budget! We came home with 10 - yes I said TEN! plants, all CA natives. Getting those puppies on sale is almost impossible - the majority were $3 and $5. What a haul!
The lunch was good, too. :-)
Now how could such great deals ruin the budget! :)
You are right that natives can be pricey. I had never seen a Dr. Hurd for sale before. I used to see Arctostaphylos uva-ursi in the Pacific Northwest all the time, but have only seen Manzanita while hiking near Clear Creek in the LA Nat. Forest. Beautiful shrub!
Happy planting!
One of the real finds was a four-foot Fremontedendron in a five-gallon pot. We have a hard time with them for some reason - I suspect it's our cut and fill soil - and they grow soooooo slowly. This one has already bloomed in the pot, so we're way ahead. Got lots of Penstemon for filler - those were the $3 ones. And three Joyce Coulter Ceanothus for $5. Lastly, a slightly ragged Chilopsis linearis that is also 3-4 feet high.
We love Manzanitas in all shapes and forms, especially the big-leafed forms. Hope you will come to our mini-RU in March, Jungleman!
OOOOHHHH - I went on Thursday and filled two carts - some of their trees were 70% off - which is a great bargain. I'm dying to go back today, but I do think the little ones need to eat this week.
This was the first time I went for a real plant shopping excursion since moving, I seriously got tears in my eyes when I walked in (I know this is ridiculous) plants last longer than shoes for the most part tho.
Good for you, Red! Nice when opportunities come at the same time as need - it doesn't happen too often!
You are all looking at it the wrong way!
I saved over $100 by going there!
We all know we really needed each of those plants!
You have the right attitude George! Any true gardener will agree, it's the other people living with us though that may beg to differ. ^_^
Unfortunately my wife is an enabler. But I get back by going to quilt shops with her.
oh no! I clicked :o)
teehee looks like I'm safe :o) sale ends in 40 minutes and it would take me at least that long to get to dublin !
Yeah, and besides, Regans has everything 30% (roses 50%) off and you're closer to that!
oh nooo! I really didnt want to know that! lol!
guess I could walk over to regans tomorrow....just in case I NEED something :o)
I always find something I need!
Got 70% off on a nice phormium, and 50% off on a lovely Pittosporum undulatum! I always seem to find random plants at Armstrong. I will have seen it in a catalog, or looked at it in a book, and think, "Oh that would be the perfect plant for the spot between the Kentia palm and the orange Hibiscus." Never fails - a few weeks later I'll be doing a little wander and there is the very plant I wanted. The Pitt I saw at the LA Country Arboretum - a nice shade tree with dark green foliage.
I was just kidding PotEmUp. It's true...we would have purchased plants anyway because we like to plant in the Fall and we still have so much uncovered (well, weed-covered) land - we really do need them. Spent part of yesterday clearing and got a couple in the ground. DH usually has to help with planting, either with the jackhammer or his big pick.
I'll stick with the 'saving money' idea!
