Arlington RU Fall 2008 - Questions

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

Dennis and Becky, I think after much looking that your plant is Downy Lobelia, Lobelia puberula;

Check the flowers, they are more of a tube and the leaf matches.
If it is not this one it could be one of the Tube-Tongues.
Tell me what you think.
Josephine.

Mornin!! Josephine.. I never got a chance to go out and try to find some , but I see Dennis took the pics. I don't think your pic is the same as this plant though. For one thing the stem is not as large on "our" plant in ratio to the flowers, as the lobelia. I realize different growing factors could result in different looking plants, and this could be the case here??

Dennis.. yay.. she is still blooming, and quite well.. she must like it at your house..lol!

Grapevine, TX(Zone 8a)

It really does look like the lobelia. I found a broken off stem that is much thicker than the remaining ones, and appears to be about the same thickness as in Jospehine's pictures. The one thing that doesn't appear to match is the "downy" stems that could can see particularly well on this page:

Hello Dennis, I think I can see downy hairs in your close up picture. Thee blossoms are a match, they sure are pretty. Maybe we have solved the mystery.
Josephine.

Dennis.. the broken off stem is probably due to the fact that we mow that area about 3 times a year.. that might account for the smaller stems??
Josephine... maybe you found it!! It's so nice to be able to put the right name to the plant. The only difference is that it does bloom at least from March or so until now. I dug one for Charlenes RU, and I know I dug it in late March or early April.

Becky... Glad to know that it blooms so long. I'll plant it in a partial shade flower bed and hope for the best! I couldn't find anyone on the internet talking about cultivating this plant, so I will consider it an experiment. :)

Dennis... I did some research last night too, and found there were several different lobelias, and that they liked moist soil. Mine have adapted to whatever God gave them, and we have been extremely dry this year, but everytime I went to the woods they were blooming. I too want to dig some up since I am finding the natives, or wild flowers very interesting! Good luck, and just remember where you got her from...lol.. cause I can get you another one!!

Grapevine, TX(Zone 8a)

I looked up close at the base of the stems, and Josephine is correct that they are fuzzy. Downy lobelia seems certain enough to put a plant label on it! :)

Excellent, I am glad we got to the bottom of it. Maybe I wiil be able to get some from you at the next swap Becky.
Josephine.

Josephine.. thanks for finding the real name out.. I am wondering how I thought it was brazos mint...lol.. sure thing... I'll dig them earlier this next year so they will look better

It's really pretty, Becky. I thought the leaves looked like Brazos penstemon...I wonder if that's where the 'brazos' part came in?

Lynea... I know I did some research on it, and thought i had found it on Daves, but wasn't there when i relooked this summer.. sooo I don't know where I came up with the name..lol

Well, I have trouble keeping my kids birth dates straight.lol It absolutely amazes me the mind power people have to keep up with plant names, botanical and common.

Who brought Sheila the russian sage? I was wondering kind was it at the RU?

Kingston, OK(Zone 7a)

pbtxlady I was looking at the plant of the month and see that you have the cat mint. Keep me in mind when you harvest. LOL
Sure missed seeing all of you. Down with the flu and fixing up Mom's old place. Still a lot to go.

Garland, TX(Zone 8a)

We missed you too, Ted! Every time I look at those big brugs you brought me last year, I think about you. Was hoping you'd join us this year.

I'll be sure to start some catmint for you. I gave away all the plants that I dug up, but hey, it grows to a pretty good size in just a summer.
