Hello, I live in Belgium in a zone 6b. I like to try wintersowing for the first time. I have read a lot of advices, but I do not understand why the seedboxes must be covered. To me it seems better not to cover them, so there will be more air.

Question from a starter in wintersowing
For a few reasons, like too much rain, snow and birds from eating the seeds.... squirrels digging in there, etc.
at least, those are why I keep them covered.
Also, as temperature rises in spring, the cover helps to make the container like a mini greenhouse. If the sun hits the container at all, the temp will rise much higher in the container than in the ambient air. And on windy days, it protects from strong wind. You do need air holes in the top for ventilation, though.

Yes do remember the air holes.
Here is a web site that is very helpful.

Thank you all for the information. I will cover the containers.
