Lady Yaguruma's Kaleidoscope was crossed with Kohan over the summer (because LYB wasn't producing pollen). Here is just one bloom from that cross! Medium sized blooms (4") displaying the leaves of LYB and the bloom colors of Kohkan. (Kohkan has variegated leaves, these are solid.)
Last year's crosses, this year's vines/blooms! (Part 3)
My gosh Becky, this is the first time I've noticed the gorgeous star pattern
in LYK x Kohkan. It's a beauty.
I love your crosses becky! can't wait to sow them but I'll have to wait. poopie=(
Eliz
Thanks Jackie and Eliz! The star pattern is very prominent in real life. I am in awe that two of my favorite vines crossed and I got some great looking blooms! A wonderful surprise how this crossed turned out. This is the main reason I like MGs so much! I love playing with genetics and seeing what I can get! Oh ... if only I could find a yellow I. nil bloom to cross with! I would just go crazy with that option! LOL!
Jackie - If I get seeds from the LYK x Kohkan, I'll send you a few.
The one ANNOYING thing about this Yaguruma gene is that it is so stingy with pollen. That is why I crossed it with Kohkan on the original vine. I was trying to get seeds ... but there is also an advantage with a pollenless bloom ... when you fertilize it with pollen from another bloom cultivar, you KNOW you got a cross! It's almost a sure thing! LOL! :-)
Thank you Becky. I would love to grow this lovely cross.
so most yaguruma blooms are stingy when it comes to pollen becky?
Eliz - Yes, no pollen at all most days. So to get seeds... I had to cross it with other cultivars. But ... it did produce pollen on some days (very few days) and that must be how I got the volunteer in the pot that looks very similar to the mother vine.
So what I suggest you do ... is mark the blooms with a masking tape tag on the stem of each bloom and write what you crossed it with or if you used it's own pollen. When I grew the mother vine, it bloomed so profusely, that I just gave up marking all the blooms. I just couldn't keep up with it, but still managed to hand-pollinate it with other vine's pollen. Despite the blooms not producing pollen, I got lots of seeds from the vine by the end of it's lifecycle. So ...
This vine can produce lots of blooms. But not large blooms. The blooms are more like I. purpurea sized blooms ... probably because it IS part I. purpurea. This is one gene (Youjiro/Yaguruma) that was a cross between I. nil and I. purpurea. :-) So that is why it has smaller blooms and lots of them! :-) It also seems to bloom and grow best when the temps are little cooler. All traits of I. purpurea! :-)
I THINK A LOT of my Mg's are actully pollinated by tons of ants...any thoughts / experience on that? I have them up and down vines everyday!! SO, if thats the case maybe I will get LUCKY and have some pollinated LYK? if there's' pollin to be found that is, they will walk across it, OR EAT it all? lol...Cannot wait too see my LYKs too, Becky! Thanks!!

Darren - I hope you are not disappointed. The outstanding thing about the vine is the number of blooms that are possible on the vine. But that may take the right growing conditions. Some folks here have grown one of the seeds and it didn't turn out at all like the mother vine. Hopefully it will delight you regardless of what you get with the seeds. My LYK x Kohkan turned out much better than I was expecting. The star pattern was a plus! :-) Be sure to post photos of the vines and especially the blooms! ;-)
I get a LOT of ants, too. But don't know if they are actually pollinating the blooms. I'm telling you ... I had NO pollen whatsoever on these vines 85% of the time. You should be able to see the tiny white spots of pollen with the naked eye.
Dareen - The ants often feed from the Extra-Floral Nectaries...they usually don't eat pollen...sometimes the ants will act as aphid herders, and if you see that happening, then it's time to raise the black flag...
The main pollen eating enemy are thrips which can be seen in the tube and on the outer limb of the Ipomoea pandurata bloom I've have attached...

TTY,...
Ron
I seem to find worms or some kind of caterpillars that show up ... eating the seeds from the inside out. Are those thrip larvae or some sort of moth larvae or what? Nasty looking little buggers!
THANKS Ron, i have not had KNOCK ON WOOD thrips i believe only aphids or some such on underside of leaves. I Just (yes this is gross) smear them off with my fingers til I get the Schultz spray. Bright green critters. This only happens in the spring. I think in my case the desert heat helps kill them off~not enough H2o... I do not recall seeing any insects actually in the flower itself ever; but now I will look for them constantly...and Becky, I will DEF post pics of what I get growing~pollen or not :) Have some great ones from Luvsgrtdanes as well....am Very Excited for the winter and season ahead!
Thanks ~!
