Does anyone have a link to the updated climate zones? I am in Western Gardens zone 22, but when I try the USDA zone maps they say everything from 9a to 10b, depending on the site I use.
Latest climate zones
Personally I'd trust the Sunset zones a lot more than the USDA zones since they take into account so many of our other unique climate variables. But if you want the USDA zones, here's a site that has good maps: http://www.bhg.com/gardening/gardening-by-region/regional-gardening/hardiness-zone-map/ If you choose California it'll pop up a nice detailed map that you can zoom in on to find out what zone you're in. Because of the way California's geography is near the coast, there tend to be lots of transitions in zones in a fairly short distance so that's probably why you're finding different results on different sites. I suspect you're either 9b or 10a depending on exactly how far from the coast you are.
As near as I can tell, I'm in 10a. I'll bet it never snows in Naples, Fl. ,but I know it does in Victorville, Ca.! I do trust Sunset climate zones, but they don't help much when you are searching on line or in catalogs. I wish some of the above would list their plants as to the chill requirements. Oh well, I'll just to have to keep Sunset W.G. in my lap when I search!

I think you're in 10a as well....but probably Sunsey Zone 23.
You've obviously found out the hard way how so many plant catalogs and plant/nursery/grower websites always seem to have such a minimal inventory of things that will do well in 10a or 10b.
Don't be discouraged by this, though. There are numerous things that WILL grow here regardless of the way these places omit zone 10 in their listings. Most of these places are out of state growers who don't realize how diverse the climate in this zone really is. Bulb catalogs are notorious for this.
I've grown lots if things that stop at zone 9 and they do perfectly fine here. It's a trial and error basis on many things, but if you like something well enough, try it !
I 've lived in OC most of my life, so I'm well aware of our many climate zones, and always "push" them., but many things just can't make it here without some winter chill. I don't bother with them as a rule. I try to buy from local nurserys, but even that doesn't always mean success.I can't tell you how many hostas I've lost! What will grow in the canyons won't neccessarily grow in the hills or the delta. All in all though, we are very lucky with our choices here, but I won't spend $100 on a Daylily!
I just get frustrated with the climate zones varying so much from one website to another. I am in WGB zone 22.

Carol, if you buy daylilies that have been hybridized in Florida you shouldn't have any trouble. Of course you still don't need to spend $100! I'm trying to grow hostas here too and I do have luck with some of them. I'm trying to buy hostas that are genetically prone to do well with little winter chill. Of course I am in 9b which may be a tad easier for the hostas.
