This is Adeline

You know how you see so many pictures of gorgeous blooms and you've just got to have that cultivar? Then you get it, baby it and all that good stuff and all you see are your buds on the ground? At that point you're ready to just toss the plant because it has made you mad, right?

Then that magical event happens -- you have a bud and it starts to open and it actually stays on the plant. You're so excited because of all the rave reviews of the plant and all the pictures (sometimes, if you notice, there is only one angle of the bloom taken because that is its "best side"), and you cannot wait to see your bloom in person and take pictures to keep and show all your friends.

But then, you find your bloom looks like this (first angle) ...

second angle...

and after that first horrible "bloom" all the others are just as deformed and once in a while you get a bloom like this... which looks just ok from just one angle.

Kinda makes you think twice about getting that new, really pretty cultivar, doesn't it? :(

Gosh, I'm so sorry you had bad luck with whoever this one is. I hope you are tossing this one to make way for something that will do well for you. I also hope that people will ask via D-mail or you will post who this is so no one else has to go through the expense and time only to end up with something that isn't satisfactory for their collection.

Pink Perfektion was almost that bad for me in the summer months. She was not a pretty sight, tho she had a few nice blooms in the fall while in the house, but I don't really want 50 brugs in my house if that is the only way I can get good blooms.

Thanks. This is the much talked about Adeline. And, I spent a small fortune for it, and would hate to see others go through the same expense and heartache.

I haven't had any problems with the blooms once she got to mature size. The first year all the buds dropped off. I never liked the looks of her leaves, but haven't ever had a deformed bloom. How frustrating for you.

This is Adeline when she was just opening up a flush. They're not quite colored up yet - but the shape is fine.

Felicia - I have a rootball and trunk I could send you from a clone of the one I'm showing you. D-mail me if you'd like to have it.

After seeing Mary's pictures, I think I would give her another year to produce. Maybe a new pot of soil and some good food and she will turn around for you. One other thing you could do would be what I would like to do.....move to a different climate. LOL!
Nice pictures, Mary.

Those are very nice pictures, Mary. And thanks so much for the offer, that's very sweet.

Actually, this is the second growing season for me with Adeline. The first year, like Mary, all the buds dropped until it cooled off. Then I had maybe one or two blooms that were ok and others were deformed (the calyx stuffed with too many skirts seemed to have been the problem in most cases).

Maybe it is the climate? Hot and humid, or hot and arid, but either way hot during the summer. Maybe Hawaii would be better. I know I could certainly thrive there! LOL!

I think you should give her more time.
Adeline blooms wonderfully here.

So, does it takes longer than two years for a plant to establish itself?

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

It doesn't take more than two years at my house. If they don't produce for me, they are gone. I don't have that extra year to wait and see, nor do I have the energy to deal with them. I don't think there is any right or wrong here...it's a personal preference whether you want to wait another year to see.

My HG died this year [ I think ] I have it and others that are 2 , some 3 years and no Y yet .
I am moving into cold frame [ not really a green house ] and repotting right now . If the roots look good I keep the plant . I repot now because I want to check for white grubs and the eggs .
I used to wait till spring , but after breaking a couple of plants trying to get out of pot , I changed to around Halloween . Now I cut the pots if any resistance when planting in ground or repotting .

Mine dropped some buds initially but now they look pretty good.

Felicia where did you get it? I hope it was a good source! This sounds a little scary!

I have Adeline and although I'm not overwhelmed with beauty.. she is a keeper for me. I've been so out of patience with brugs if they don't bloom, I'm choppin them out.. I've had it.

That absolutely stunning triple white? A deformed burnt calyx mess.. no blooms at all... just trash..

(Mary) Poway, CA(Zone 10a)

Funny thing is that I chopped a branch off Adeline and rooted it - and it bloomed fine 6 months later. The mother plant of that clone took close to 2 years before she stopped dropping buds. They both started life the same .... as cuttings that were rooted. Were conditions better this year? I'm not sure how much it mattered, but it was a pretty mild summer here. I only turned the air conditioner on twice, whereas the summer of 07 I thought for sure that I was going to melt with the heat. She'll stay as long as she behaves. If we're going to put all our sweat and money into it, we might as well just keep the ones that make it worth your while.

Hey Joyce, how've ya been? I got Adeline from a very reputable source, which is a good thing. I know what you mean too about the absolutely stunning triple white -- the quad pink -- no blooms at all this year -- all the buds fell off. Same with the other seedling that has had buds drop for 2 years now. So, they will both be compost.

Mary, looking back on the weather conditions, it was much worse in 2007 -- temps in the 100's a lot along with drought. This year it was a better summer with temps "only" in the 90's, but still drought conditions.

That's very interesting about your cutting doing better than the mother plant. I may try that and see if it makes a difference here. And, you're exactly, with all the time, money and effort we put into these plants, only the good ones should be kept. :)

Not sure for the reasons of the problems others have been having, but Adeline has always done fine here.
She's a beauty here.
Here is Adeline blooming here right now.
