Hardy Hybiscus seeds & Weevils - Questions!

Edmond, OK(Zone 7a)

I am fairly new to seed collecting and was just personally introduced to the weevil. Ya!! Something new for today!

I collected hardy hibiscus seeds just 8 days ago and today found to my surprise...weevils. Being a gardener, I'm not squirmish to bugs and am used to things crawling out of unexpected places...however I became intrigued when I realized these came out of the seed. I have perfect little holes in over a dozen seeds.

I have searched and read quite a few threads on DG about weevils and have become a little confused. Therefore I'm seeking the expertise of fellow gardeners and scientists...when you collect the dried out seed will the weevils be killed by freezing the seed or does it just incubate them until warmer temps come around? I know they will live through refrigeration but couldn't find anyone giving any specific advice. How do you trade and store hardy hibiscus seed to fend off the weevil? Also, do weevils attack 'rose of sharon' seeds as well? Thanks for any help and clarification!

chele,

I recently posted the same questions on this Post. Seems it is a problem many of us share.

Thanks Gita, but it seems we still have not found the answer. :-) I wasn't sure on where to post the question - I put it in the Garden Pest forum as well......still no answers. I froze them all and will see if any germinate next spring.

chele,

What finally got the few remaining weevils on my plate of seeds was spraying the seeds with Ortho's "Home Defense Max"....They were GONE! Dead! Of course, there were not all that many left--but there was crawling movement everywhere over the seeds.
I havd already sprayed them all with another garden insect spray, but it did nothing to the ones inside the seeds. They just crawled out later.

"Home Defense" is an excellent product. You can use it to spray around your floorboards, windowsills, under the sink, bottoms of doors, etc anf it puts down a barrier that ants and bugs won't cross for 4 months. Safe to pets and children after it dries.
You can get it at HD or Lowes....or anywhere else....
