Gabi: I don't find the linearis for sale on the site! Help! I want this one!

(Zone 1)

Woo Hoo ... Found it! Ordered it!

Thanks so much Gabi!

(Zone 1)

Wow! I just got an e-mail with tracking number ... it's already shipped! Since Engelmann Greenhouse is only about 50 miles across the state, I bet UPS delivers it tomorrow!

Teguise, Spain

It might be an idea to take a few little cuttings when you get it delivered. H linearis seems to like some people, and positively loath others...I am still having problems with this one..I had 6 pots of it growing well this year from what I had to root the last time I had a plant collapse, and Im down to 1 again. I have tried it in so many different growing mediums, and I dont know. I now have so many cuttings rooting again, Im going to have to experiment more. 1 is still doing well and flowered nicely...the others just kept growing, then before you knew it....Bam.....all dried up stems at the base again and back into the hospital ward.
My sister has one, and she dosent really like it...but, hers has grown like a weed...you could easily wear it as a wig its so lush, and she just chucks water at it when she remembers..theres no justice in the world.
Personally, I dont thik this plant, nor H bella , like to be moved from location to location, and sometimes, the last move is too much for the plant.
I bought yet another H bella a few months back....2 weeks later, it was all dead at the base...however, the several pots I now have of it from cuttings are doing great....we shall see

Dominic, thanks for the tips regarding the linearis. I think I will do just as you suggest and take a few cuttings as soon as I get it, just in case! My nummularioides did just what you described in your post, I had the plant for about a year and it was so full and pretty, then all of a sudden it began to dry up and die. I'm wondering if it happened because I moved it from one side of the house to the other and maybe it just wanted to be left alone! I think when the linearis arrives I will put it in one spot and just leave it alone but I will take a few cuttings first!

Oooo, and here I sit so smug with my happily growing linearis ... it's grown 2 feet and several new shoots this year alone! I guess I'd better take some cuttings before I'm forced to eat crow, eh...

Its boom or bust with H linearis Christine.
If its happy, keep doing whatever youre doing....it obviously likes you..!!!
Many years ago...must be 25 now......yikes!! , I saw the most beautiful specimen of H linearis in North Wales and fell in love with the plant. Tony Jackson was the grower, and the plant was humungous.!!! Soooo impressive, and absolutely covered in flowers. It was love at first sight....never forgotten it.
Theres a photo bouncing around the internet of it growing wild along branches, and its quite a spectacle. I cant find the actual photo, but Im sure a lot of people have seen it. I have a branch allocated, and when my new bunch have rooted...........thats the easy part.....Im going to mount some in moss and hang it high in my shade house and try it that way.....My Dishidias I have mounted are really enjoying ....well, growing 'au naturel' on the branches....they cling to the surface and envelop the shape they grow over........they kinda remind me of the alien on John Hurts face on Alien.......very lovely plants...Ill post some photos when I can find a suitable thread for Dischidias

Yes, I'm planning on taking a few cuttings for insurance. I already have a tiny pot of linearis growing in soil (it's healthy but doesn't grow), and I plan on taking those cuttings along with some of the EA linearis and potting them into one of my new hydro pots.

Glad you got one Lin!

Gabi

Austin, TX(Zone 8b)

I was late again =(
Glad you both got it!

Whitestone, NY(Zone 7a)

Oh no. Sorry Lourdes :(
I wish I knew you were looking for it, I would've gotten an extra for you.
I would love to send you the small one I have (it's 3 tiny cuttings, but they are rooted and healthy). Let me know...it's yours if you want it.

Gabi

You are so sweet Gabi =)!
I'll d mail you tomorrow.
Thank you !

Lin,
I just noticed that you wrote that you got a confirmation email from EA. I was supposed to get an email from them also, but didn't. I ordered it before you, so now I'm concerned that something went wrong. I should've printed out my order confirmation page. I just emailed EA to make sure it went through...cross your fingers for me!

Has anyone had order problems with the online EA store? I'm stressing big time!

Gabi

Ogden, UT

Gabi, I order the Australis from EA and I never received any confirmation from them. Just the plant arrived. So do not stress yet!

(Zone 1)

Gabi, This is the first time I've ever ordered from them. It did ask for an e-address when I placed the order but I wasn't expecting a confirmation.

I just tracked it with the UPS number they gave me and it is in transit so I should get it this evening. I'm real curious as to what size the plant will be, didn't even pay attention to if it told the size of the pot when I placed the order.

Austin, TX(Zone 8b)

Gabi the size will be 8 in pot =)

Macon, IL(Zone 5b)

Gabi - I ordered a "hoya stripes" (curtisii), never got a confirmation, and the plant arrived within a week - so don't worry yet!

Karen

Whitestone, NY(Zone 7a)

Ok well my stressing is over!! I spoke to EA and they shipped it yesterday. They said they sent an email out but I never got one. Oh well. As long as it gets here! I asked for the tracking number, and it is scheduled to get to me on Monday.

Kit and Karen, thanks for reassuring me :)

Lin, I can't wait to see your linearis!! Please post pics!

Yes Lourdes, I didn't realize at first that it was an 8" pot (when I ordered it), and then I went back to look at it shortly after and saw that...very exciting, but Sam is going to KILL me! I told her that I wouldn't order anymore plants this year, and since then I think I've ordered/received seven (6 plants and 1 cutting). Can't trust a hoyaholic, huh?!

Gabi

(Zone 1)

Gabi ... maybe you could just tell Sam the hoya is a present for her, LOL ... name it "Sam" and always refer to that one as Sam. Oh, and you could have Sam 1, Sam 2, if it's a small plant it could be "Lil' Sammy" etc. Your family of hoyas! Think she'd go for that? Nah ... they never do! ^_^

I know my DH thinks I have waaay too many plants, when he finds me out back on the deck with dirt, perlite, bark, pots and plants everywhere, he will make the comment "I thought you said a couple of weeks ago that you just cleaned up the deck" and I say, "I did ... but I found something else that needed dividing and repotting". He just rolls his eyes and smiles! He knows that playing in the dirt is my thing!

I was stunned a few weeks ago when I decided to make a list of all the hoyas I have acquired the past year! I'm up to 50 with this new linearis! I keep saying I should get rid of every other plant and just grow hoya but so far I haven't been able to part with my other plants! Some I have had for many, many years and it is almost impossible to think of giving them up. But, in another 6 or 7 years when DH retires, I will have to downsize because we want to travel. Or, maybe I will win the lottery and be able to hire someone to Plant Sit! ^_^ They could vacation at my house and take care of the plants and cats! LOL.

Shepherdstown, WV

Hey, Gabi,

You can always keep some of your hoyas at my house! Has Sam noticed the other half dozen that have shown up? LOL Honestly do you think she'll notice an 8 inch pot of a Cousin It looking plant blocking what was left of her view out the windows?!?! Does she really need to see outside anyway?

Lin,

Post your picture as soon as you can!!!! Mine doesn't arrive until Monday!

BTW-
Are there different types of linearis? The guy from EA who sent sent the email informing me linearis was back in stock later sent another email (in response to one I had sent) saying this is a rare slow growing form of linearis and that's the reason it's so difficult for them to keep in stock. I'll be curious to compare it to my 3 little cuttings!

Kelly

(Zone 1)

Kelly, I didn't know there was more than one linearis but I'm not that knowledgeable about hoyas. Until joining DG I had no idea there was more than the Krimson Princess. LOL.

hmm ... it was just a couple of months ago that EA had them in stock and sold out - if it's a "rare" slower growing form, I wonder how they grew them so quickly to have them back in stock so soon?

Shepherdstown, WV

Lin,

I don't have a clue about the different forms -although I have noticed a difference in colors of some! I've seen it described as a greyish/bluish green color and have seen pictures of very dark green leaves, but yet my little one has very light green leaves with no greyish/bluish color. Thinking, too, that I may have read something from MS Burton about different varieties?

EA only had 10 available for sale yesterday. Maybe these were ones they were rooting when the last ones were up for sale? Not sure.

Kelly

(Zone 1)

Interesting! Now I am really curious to get mine to see what it looks like!

Shepherdstown, WV

I should say though that those difference might be because of environmental factors....

Ms. Burton does state on Hoyas R Us that there are two varieties out there, but only one in circulation that she's aware of.....see her posting on Hoyas R Us "Hoya Linearis and it's varieties". She says the difference is in the flowers.

(Zone 1)

I'm not a member of the group Hoyas R Us so I probably can't view the info or photo's. Will go google and check it out though, to see.

Shepherdstown, WV

Lin, I'm not a member of Hoyas R Us either. Anyone can lurk though!

(Zone 1)

Can you tell me, the non technical person how to find the post on there about the linearis?

Whitestone, NY(Zone 7a)

You both are too funny :)

Lin, if I named a "cousin It" looking plant after Sam she might REALLY kill me. Ha. And Sam does the same thing as your hubby...she just rolls her eyes and smiles when she catches me repotting a hoya she doesn't recognize, or when she says "you have a package...I wonder what it is".
I had a hard time getting rid of my other plants when I got into hoyas, but eventually my hoya addiction took over and they all got knew homes!

Kelly, you are hilarious. You're right, what does she need window views for? I'll just buy her another video game and she'll forget all about the developing greenhouse in the apartment.
Yes, she has noticed a few of the new ones and did her typical eye roll and smile, but most are still in transit. So if you don't see me on here in a few days, call 911.

Gabi

(Zone 1)

Gabi, I've thought about telling my DH that in the long run the cost of hoya plants vs the cost of those store bought air freshener's, works out to be a better deal! The hoyas for a long time with their fragrant blooms whereas, the expensive store bought plug in air fresheners seem to be gone in a couple of weeks time! Makes sense to me. ^_^

(Zone 1)

Kelly, Thank you so much for the link to that information!

(Zone 1)

Ok, I've googled for info on the H. linearis but don't find much. Can someone tell me what type location is best for this one? Does it like any sun or prefer direct shade? What about temp's ... cooler, warmer? High humidity? (Well, it won't have much choice on that one down here where it's so humid all year round.) What about water, does is it one that likes a lot of water, or should I let it dry out completely before watering again?

Sorry about all the questions regarding this one, I just want to try to give it the best start I can.

Lin, I have mine in a south facing window, almost touching the window, so it gets a great deal of light, and quite a lot of sun. I let it dry out 100% between waterings then drench it - so it likes a lot of water, but then don't water it again until its completely dry.

Christine

(Zone 1)

Thanks Christine! I was thinking of putting mine on the front porch which is on the east side of the house. It would get a little bit of morning sun filtered by some trees, but bright light all day. Since linearis is a dangling, hanging type hoya I don't want to have it inside ... we have four cats and two of them just seem to think any plant that dangles is a new toy for them to bat their paws at, play with and sometimes chew on, so I'm afraid the linearis will have to stay outside! I might hang it out on the SW corner of the pool deck where it would get a bit more sun. I might just divide it into two separate pots and put one out front and one out back to see if one does better than the other!

Teguise, Spain

I mentioned earlier my sister has a very healthy linearis in London. She keeps it in a conservatory which is made of glass that keeps the summer heat out, and the winter warmth in..Crystalux, is it? Anyhow.....its on the ledge where she first placed it, high up, and she hasnt moved it, tho she did pot it on into a larger pot because it kept falling over with its weight...normal potting medium for houseplants. It does get direct sun during part of the day, but it dosent get hot because of the glass.....she dosent spray it, or give it any special treatment...like I said before..she dosent really like it, but Ive made her swear she wont get rid of it.....or else.....:))...
I have fussed and faffed over mine, and they havent responded well...seems like neglect works for this one..Pot luck ( does that expression come from gardening? )

Dominic

(Zone 1)

^_^ Dominic ... I can't believe your sister wanted to get rid of that hoya! I'm glad you talked her out of parting with it. If it was my sister I'd be offering to adopt it.

I can't put many house plants in direct sun here in Florida, it would fry them. We can't put anything directly in front of a window that gets sun either because the heat from the reflection off the glass burns the foliage. I do like plants that thrive on neglect ... it makes life so much easier!

Teguise, Spain

If I lived in the same country, Lin, it would be in my shadehouse.....however, I did once bring a large linearis in a tin box in my suitcase.....it was ok for about 2 weeks, then it started to collapse....its where I keep getting my stock to re root the little blighter from the one I originally brought.......

(Zone 1)

H. linearis just arrived! I've hung it on the front porch but tomorrow will repot into my mix and take some cuttings. This plant reminds me a lot of a Rhipsalis I have.

It is beutiful Lin!!!!
congratulations

Shepherdstown, WV

Holy crap, Lin! That's gorgeous! Can't wait, can't wait, CAN'T WAIT!!! It does look like it has the lighter colored leaves like my little cuttings!

Gabi, it's on my calendar to do the rounds on the forums Monday evening and make sure you've posted, otherwise 911 it is! Seems to me there's a picture of you online hugging a plant (imagine that!)from when you, Eddie and a couple of others went to Meadow Farms - that's the one we'll distribute with the missing persons report. Got your back!
