germinating northern white cedar seed- Thuja occidentalis

Francesville, IN

i have nearly a quart of collected northern white cedar seeds. several web sites seem to have differing opioions on the best way to get the seed to germinate. one says sew directly in the soil in fall as soon as seed is collected, one says a scarification period of 30-60 days at 32º-41ºF is required and yet another says a week in the refrigerator will help germination percentages. has anyone tried to start these wonderful windbreak trees from seed? what method did you use? how successful was it. thanks for all your help. richard in northern indiana
