I live in Ontario, Canada - and my two year old came across a very aggressive spider today.
hear are the specs:
* About 1/2 in length
* Legs were brown/black striped
* Body was a bright red in colour, with a series of white circles on it (4 on top almost in a cross symbol), a couple more on the butt side of the body.
* when I lowered my phone camera down to take a picture, it reared up raising it's front two legs as if too strike.
* Unfortunately, I am having difficulty downloading the picture... so none attached.
If anyone out there knows this spider by chance, or a site where I can enter in the description and find an answer, it would be appreciated.
Thanks! James

Most spider defensive behavior may be mistaken for aggression. This does not sound like anything dangerous, it most likely is a male orb weaver that was wandering about in search of a mate. You can find a list of the spiders of Ontario at http://www.canadianarachnology.org/data/spiderslist/ON - clicking on a species name usually will bring up an image along with the descriptoin (images are not available for all species on the list).
Thank you very much suunto.
James
