Need Help - Harvested Moonflower seed too soon

Hudson, OH(Zone 5b)

This is the first time I grew a moonflower vine. Beautiful! However, I was cutting it down for fall clean up and noticed the large pods (seeds.) Didn't realize that they're seed pods...can't believe I did this. From what I've read, these are not dark and dry the way I understand they should be to harvest. Any way that I can still preserve them for next year's planting?

Hi Kathleen,

Can you post a picture of your pod so we can see how mature it is? If it isn't mature enough, its seeds won't germinate.

However, you might try to ripen the pods like I did last fall with mine. Although mine weren't ripe enough when frost came last fall, either, I put the pedicels in water, and was able to ripen a small fraction of pods successfully that way. (The pedicel is that stalk that attaches the flower or bud to the main stem.)

So, run - don't walk - to those pods and stick their pedicels or sections of stems in water asap. Since the stem ends - if any - have been exposed to air, the passages through them through which water passes have probably dried up, so you'll want to cut the stems back, if possible, under water immediately before putting them into a glass of water.

Hope this helps,
Karen

Kathleen, changing the water daily will keep slime that tends to form on the stems down, as will adding about a 1/4 tsp of hydrogen peroxide (H202 from the drug store at about 3% strength) in each glass of water.

Wow! Lots of good info! Thx Ron and Karen! The pods are in water now with a bit of H202.
