Was digging a hole and dug up this ugly monstrous grub. Yes I put him back but should I have? Gosh he sure is big. Any ideas??

This appears to be a larva of a cerambycid beetle in the subfamily Prioninae; possibly a Derobrachus spp. - see http://entweb.clemson.edu/cuentres/cesheets/soybean/ce58.jpg for an image. Some species in this genus reportedly feed on roots of grasses (such as Bahia grass), soy beans, and peanuts.

So, I guess what I saw today might be a grub. I didn't think to take a picture of it. I was so stunned and this thing looked so gross, we used the pincher/pick-up tool to toss it into trash. Please do not take this as a racist comment, but this is the only way I can describe it. It looked like a dismembered chubby black man's middle finger (in length and width), only a little narrower on both ends. DH kicked it into my garden when I freaked and had him put it into trash. I'm guessing that thing could eat like a gopher!!

Does it sound like a grub?

Sounds like some kind of grub, but hard to say what kind with out seeing a picture.
