Looks like he could still grow into that beak... but he's just ADORABLE! Thanks for sharing. Its fascinating how quickly they grow.

*Warning really stupid question about to follow* Is he a dove or a pigeon. I think I've seen him referred to as both and am confused non-the-less.

(Zone 7b)

BC (baby claire) Is a peach colored ring neck "Dove"

Vancouver, WA(Zone 8a)

Absolutely adorable - thanks for answering the dumb question. :)

Oxford, NS(Zone 5b)

Ohhhh, BC is allllll grown up! (well, almost). He is just beautiful. What a lovely delicate color he has. I am so proud of my little namesake! Thank you for the pictures Harmony, and for sharing his development with us. It really makes me want to try doves or pigeons. One thing at a time...

(Tia) Norman, OK(Zone 7a)

LOL Claire i was waiting for that one. You silly girl, 1 thing at a time.

(Zone 7b)

Claire i'll give you BC if i can have baby Harmony!

Vancouver, WA(Zone 8a)

Ohhhh.... sweet trade in the making.... have I missed pictures of a baby Harmony namesake????

DH was looking at Doves in the petstore the other day...... hmmmmm..... maybe they are in our future as well? Don't worry, I'm not saying I would buy from there.

(Zone 7b)

Oh Doves are such Good Pets and are so easy to care for i highly recommend them.

Vancouver, WA(Zone 8a)

Well, should we get serious about it, you'd be the first I'd talk to and that's exactly what I told DH when we were in the store the other night. :-)

Do you ship across state??? ~8-D

(Zone 7b)

I've never shipped birds before and i don't know how. I sell my birds locally at a bargin price of $10 each and the pet smart here charges $30 each.
When i saw that i about hit the floor!

I can sell so cheap because i have so many breeder pairs the bird you see here is out of the nest and in about a week his parent's would be setting again.

It's close to the end of my breeding season and only the ones with eggs or baby's now will be left to finish. Then i will remove all the nest and transfer all my breeders to one huge pen for the winter then come spring it's time to pair up and breed again.

Biggs, KY(Zone 6a)

Do they mate for life?

(Zone 7b)

Sorry been out doing what i call flock evaluation which means somebody's gettin the boot LOL
Just kidden no it's time to sell my over stock of pigeons and Doves and see who stays and who goe's.

No they don't mate for life. I have been told that but they never seem to mind who they with long as it's the other sex.
I have pairs that are permanently together only because they are perfect breeder pairs and produce pure offspring.

It's the end of my breeding season and i tag my pairs i want to put back together before i move them to winter quarters so i will know who belongs to who.

I will be takeing all the excess to the flea market saturday yall come it's the J&J Flea Market.

Biggs, KY(Zone 6a)

We went by the local flea market Saturday. There were lots of animals. They had some birds that were either pigeons are doves. I can't tell them apart unless they are side by side. I think they were doves but I'm not sure. There were lots of rabbits and ducks.

(Zone 7b)

Most pigeons are fat and kinda chunky and have fat legs and tend to walk sort of up right, Doves are more bird like and slender and have sharper beaks.

Oxford, NS(Zone 5b)

Harmony, can I ask a slightly rude question about pigeons? If the answer is no, stop reading!

When I was at that animal swap in Missouri, I was looking at some of the pigeons, and some of them have this enormous chest that is like a big bubble, and their head is sort of positioned over the middle of their body. First of all, I don't know how those pigeons can fly, because they can't see where they are going. Second, I don't know how those pigeons can mate, because how can they see what they are doing? Are they only artificial insemination pigeons? And thirdly, why do pigeon fanciers find them attractive - to me they sort of look like an aberration.

Sorry if you like those kind of pigeons. I just don't get it.
Claire

(Zone 7b)

Did they look like these if they did they are fantails and that is how they display for a mate or to show off in front of other pigeons.
It's actually a genetic defect that breeders bred into this breed and they don't do it all the time.

I have a pair and they have no problem eating or getting busy if you know what i mean.

You should really see the mateing dance it's a sight to behold.
He aproaches her and nibbles on her neck then they will dance they walk passed each other turn and doesy doe and come back pass each other as they fan thier tails and drag them then turn and come back and meet and turn in perfect unison in a circle then they will bow and nibble necks and bow and nibble then she will ask to be fed and he will regurgitate into her mouth then again nod and finaly perfect circle and then she bows and he mount's and mates after which he drops his tail and flairs it and circles her for she is now his and she will bow as he pass's.

This pic is a male trying to talk a female into a dance.

Horses can get a disease called pigeon fever. It is so named because it makes abcesses which are often in the chest and causes the chest to jutt out like a pigeon.

Oxford, NS(Zone 5b)

OK, interesting. There were like 30 or 40 in a small cage and they were all sticking their chest out like that one, all the time. This is why I thought it looked odd. It is one thing if it is a mating display, but I thought their head was permanently stuck back like that, and then I couldn't figure out how they could eat or anything. The dance sounds very interesting - I would like to see that!

I am glad they don't do that all the time. It just gives me a sore neck from looking at it.

I saw another funny one with loopy feathers all over it. I forget what it was called. Looked like somebody gave it a perm. I thought it would be fun to have one.

Biggs, KY(Zone 6a)

How about those roler pigeons? They are cool.

(Zone 7b)

There are Homers,Rollers,Tumblers,Tipplers,High Fliers,Capuchine's,Figuritas,Satinette's,Blondettes,Turbits,Jacobins,Chinese Owls,Fairys,Frill Backs,Ice Pigeons,Modenas,Kings, and this isn't all of them but i'm tired of typeing.

Biggs, KY(Zone 6a)

What are the common ones called that you see in cities?

(Zone 7b)

PIGEONS LOL!!!!

Vancouver, WA(Zone 8a)

I saw one at the fair like you are talking about Claire. Cutest darn thing! I looked like a frizzle version for a pigeon -- ha!

Oxford, NS(Zone 5b)

Frillback! Yes, that was it! Too cool!

Biggs, KY(Zone 6a)

Is there really no name for the common ones?

(Zone 7b)

Oh Frill Backs i would of bought those.

(Zone 7b)

Alot of them are probably lost homers or just common mixed pigeons.

FYI Did you know people eat pigeons those are the white kings and the modena they are big and meaty.

Biggs, KY(Zone 6a)

Yes. They are called scwab. I'm not sure if that is the proper spelling.

Oxford, NS(Zone 5b)

Canadian Spelling Police have noted spelling infraction.

Squab.

Small violation - no fee due.
:-)

(Zone 7b)

No Squab is an unborn pigeon they eat those raw i believe.

These are adult pigeons and the man who i know that eats them backs them like a duck.

Biggs, KY(Zone 6a)

If I remember correctly from the article I read in Country Woman many years ago, a squab is a young pigeon not one still in the egg. The lady raised them and sold them to a local restaurant as a sideline farm business.

Oxford, NS(Zone 5b)

Hmmm....I don't think it's unborn, I think it's just a young pigeon. I see it quite often on menus and it's cooked at the places I eat.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Squab_(food)

Regardless, I don't want to eat it!

And definitely not adult!

(Zone 7b)

It can go both ways unhatched or not.

(Zone 7b)

I believe the ones that are unhatched are considered a delicasey (sp) probably in those restarant nobody can afford to eat at LOL

Biggs, KY(Zone 6a)

It would have to be on the appetizer menu no bigger than it would be.
