rooting single leaves?

Chesapeake, VA(Zone 7b)

This is all I had left of my finlaysonii I got from DL. It kept rotting on me. I took the leaf and stuck it in dirt and it has been there for 2 years. I had read on here somewhere that it may or may not do anything. I figured as long as it stayed green I keep it. Well I was inspecting really close the other day and this is what I found. Follow the stick down and you can see a nub. I guess that is a root? Does that mean this will eventually grow out?

This is another one I did. I think it is Arnottia as I didn't label it. The mother plant is doing fine so I didn't care if the leaf made it or not. You can see better developement on this one.

Sometimes they will make a new vine, sometimes they'll sit for years and do nothing. I gave a couple who are friends of mine two rooted leaves of Hoya kerii for valentines day four years ago, they are still two green hearts sitting in the pot, healthy, but no vines.

Often the roots will be all they make...but it is worth a try!!!

Thanks! Since they are not taking up any room, I'll let 'em be and see what they do.

I rooted a Hoya carnosa cutting with two leaves in water a few months ago. They developed roots nicely, and the leaves look green and healthy, but no new growth on mine either. Its still newly potted so I will give it some more time.

Even if they don't ever grow new vines, it's still fun to root em'!

Mark: I love that idea of two potted H. kerri leaves! What a great idea for Valentine's day, or an Anniversary (but Valentine's day is perfect!) I used to have a red heart pot that would have been perfect for something like that! I don't have the kerri but if I ever get that particular Hoya, I'm going to take two leaves and plant them together!

I have told this story many times, but my mother has a hoya carnosa. One day I decided to take four leaves and put them in ordinary soil and left them in her greenhouse. Most of them rooted, and one had sent out a shoot when I went to check on them a few months later. That plant is now the one that flowers every year and started my obsession with these plants!!!

On a side note, I went to someone's house this weekend and was delighted to see their carnosa, tied up across the banner rail along her wall - it was lovely and it was flowering!

What a great story! I guess like all plants, they have ideas of their own ... sometimes they do surprise us don't they!

Bmedel posted over on the Africa Violet forum, on an off topic thread, this photo of her H. carnosa that she started as a cutting from her grandmothers plant. She said it wanted to climb, so her husband strung up some clothes line and the plant looks amazing! http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/p.php?pid=6151209 This lady can grow! Her Gesneriads are gorgeous and her hoyas are healthy and really beautiful too!

That is beautiful. I bought a small plant "Hoya Cornosa" in Home Depot yesterday. 3" pot $2.95 and now I know what it looks like. I have been wanting to try Hoyas, can't have too many though, limited space, but I think it is a perfect spot outside, lots of shade on the patio, however very bright. Thanks for that picture. Welcome to Hoyas Helene!
I noticed you're close by...I'm in Sarasota. These plants love our climate.
Are you going the the Plant Fair @ Selby Gardens next weekend?
My mom is coming into town for the week so that is our first stop...on the way home from the airport.
